A soulless place that does little to represent the passion of the National Bard.
Enter the building, browse in the shop and you feel ignored, the one member of staff visible seemed more intent on getting products on shelves than welcoming visitors.
The cafe is spacious, and relatively clean but we had to wipe coleslaw from one seat before sitting down. The wait is unacceptable. We queued for a basic scone and tea. No apologies or explanation .
Lots of good alternatives in Ayrshire.

Loved the museum almost makes you want to restart love of poetry. Actually have never lost it. The main museum has a wealth of beautiful artifacts, including Burns writing desk, pictures etc. The museum has recently acquired some letters by Burns. I was amazed by the lovely script. The cafe had the best scones have ever eaten at a National Trust outlet. Believe me when I say have eaten tons. Good range o f baked goods and food. Pleasant staff and good clean toilets. I then went up to the cottage where the family lived. So pretty and atmospheric. Nice walk around grounds as well.

Even though I have visited the cottage many times I have never visited the exhibition room before, so thought id pop in to check it out.
The exhibition was good and theres lots to see, the only downside I would say that they close at 4pm which isn't great especially at the weekends and the room is very dark, obviously to preserve the artifacts but will make it difficult if you have bad eyesight.
The carpark is very small for the amount of visitors that are using it, causing alot of people to park on the main road.
The shop was well stocked and staff were great but i never got a chance to check out the cafe but it will give me a reason to return as I've heard great things!

The museum is a must for Burns fans,as is the village overall.Pretty place with of cours Burns Cottage, Alloway Kirk and the old Brig o Doon. It’s just such a lovely area to visit.
This review is really about the cafe which is queued out before it opens…no wonder with a great hot drink and scones deal of £3.95! And the scones are first class…the Clootie Dumpling is divine.
Nice ladies serving and wee outlook onto the garden grounds.
Play area for children too.
Nice shop with quality goods.
Thumbs up from me for those scones!

This is a gloomy place, you cannot therefore see the exhibits properly, thus you cannot read the poems.
Dark gloomy places lower the spirit and are depressing. If the objects in the museum cannot be enjoyed,
what is the point. Burns was a fun loving man of the people, who lived life. What would he have made of this
miserable place. If you come bring a torch.

I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit with us, as we explain on arrival and as you enter the museum light levels are low to protect the written works which are the actual works. It's not really our intention that the poems should be read in entirety, the are their to give a taste of his work and there is lots of interpretation and the opportunity to hear his works through the handsets beside the poetry cases.
The Museum offers so much more that just the written works with objects owned by Burns and his family , interactives and items which remember and celebrate him and his work.
On the first Tuesday of each month we offer accessible opening which means the lights come up , so you might prefer that experience, though the interactives and some of the audio is suspended to create a calm experience for those who are not so comfortable with too much noise or visual stimulation
I do hope you managed to visit all the other parts of site which we look after, the Monument Gardens, Statue house, Auld Brig, Graveyard , Poet's path with it's giant mouse and of course the Birthplace Cottage and it's smallholding with the amazing wicker sculptures by local artist David Powell and which should also have been part of your experience with us

This museum is exceptionally good. Very informative and very well laid out. Really enjoyed listening to the Burns poems and songs.
Yes, it is dark but, as a notice explains, it has to be in order to preserve the exhibits. However it is still possible to read all the information.
We had “free” entry as NTS members but I thought the entry prices were reasonable.
We found the food in the cafe was excellent and good value.
I note one or two adverse comments but we found the staff very helpful and pleasant both in the museum and in the cafe.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I look at the price of an adult ticket which I paid for 2 people. So we spend about 3 hours+ to make our money's worth. I did enjoy the interactive section.
So I thought we would have lunch here as the bus was every hour and we just missed one. Boy that was a big mistake as it cost me £16 for 2 lentil soups and 2 soft drinks. an absolute rip-off. I certainly won't be coming back here again if the prices are that high.

I am sorry to here that you did not enjoy your visit with us.
It is not unusual to spend 3 hours with us particularly if you take in all the elements of the site which your entrance fee and cafe purchases helps to maintain: the Museum and collection, Birthplace Cottage, Smallholding and Gardens, our Poet's Path and sculptures, the Monument, its gardens and the roundhouse and you can visit the Auld Kirk and the final resting place of William Burns but we offer is not for everyone and I am sorry that we were unable to meet your expectations, though it is good to hear that you enjoyed our interactives.
Becoming a member of the National Trust for Scotland would give you unlimited free access to all of our properties and complimentary entry to National Trust properties across the UK and this might represent better value for you, our team should have made you aware of this option when paying.
However I will dispute the price you quote as a charge for soup and soft drinks as I am unable to think how the products we sell add up to that price- please contact me burns@nts.org.uk to discuss further and I will be happy to arrange a refund if you have been overcharged.

An amazing man and this museum is a great tribute to his life, work and the times in which he lived.
Included in the admission is Burns cottage a few hundred yards from the museum. Wonderful gardens well looked after by mostly volunteers.

Thank you for your review, for anyone reading this and thinking about visit I should clarify that the cottage is a 15 minute walk away from the main museum so maybe a wee bit further away than suggested here.
Our Gardeners will be delighted to here how much you enjoyed the space and the volunteers who support them will also be pleased to hear that they are appreciated not only but us but our visitors as well,

A wonderful place to visit. So much infirm presented in a lovely way. We learnt so much. It so worth a visit, we spent the day at the various sites. Loved the monument and gardens as well as the lovely gardens at the cottage. Seeing the Brig a Doon was amazing too! A wedding was happening so there was a piper which added to the atmosphere.

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit with us, its great to hear that you enjoyed your day and managed to take in all parts of the site during your visit, whilst we can't take credit for the piper, we are often delighted to hear the pipes with weddings being such a regular occurrence at the Brig' o Doon Hotel.
We hope to welcome you back to visit us again in the future!

Can we bring our dogs
Susan C
Alloway, UKمساهمتيْن
Hello
Dogs on a lead are very welcome in the outdoor parts of the site so you can bring them into the Museum Gardens, there is a gate at the back of the property to access that, the Monument Gardens, Poet's Path and into the cottage grounds. However we ask that you do not take into the cottage or the museum building.
We ask that you keep your dog on a lead as not everyone is comfortable with loose dogs and particularly in the Museum Gardens there can be a lot of children. As responsible dog owners I am sure you would also clean up after your dogs. Water bowls are available at the Museum and there is a covered area if wish to sit and eat outside.
I hope this helps, Susan Visitor Services Manager

Does this place let in English National Trust members in for free with their card?
Susan C
Alloway, UKمساهمتيْن
Hello
There is a reciprocal agreement which allows National Trust members worldwide to use their cards to gain entry to National Trust for Scotland properties, so the answer is yes, you can use your National Trust card to enter any National Trust for Scotland property.
Please note that each cardholder must have their card with them and we are unable to access the NT database to check membership status should you forget your card. If you do not have your card without we would unfortunately have to charge membership.

Does it cost to visit the gardens, gift shop etc? Or just the museum? My dad and boyfriend and big museum fans and we will be bringing our dog along but this looks like an excellent place for a little walk and a nice morning out.
Susan C

Hi the only two parts of the site which require entry tickets are the museum and the cottage, dogs are welcome in both the monument and museum gardens on a lead. The museum garden has outside tables and chairs so you can enjoy coffee or a meal outside with your dogs, we also have water bowls so you can water your dogs. the Museum is situated in the main building at Murdoch's Loan but you can enter the shop and café at this site without going into the museum, unfortunately dogs are not allowed in the building but mentioned before there is the opportunity for them to join you in the gardens. hope this helps and we look forward to welcoming you all soon!

My friend says there's an old fiddle in the museum and i was wondering if i took along some sheet music, if i'd get to play it or not?
Susan C
Alloway, UKمساهمتيْن
We think you may be referring to the "Gregg Fiddle" which belonged to William Gregg and was played during dance classes at the Bachelors Club, Tarbolton which were attended by Robert Burns.
This precious instrument was fully resorted by the National Trust for Scotland last year. Due to it age and value it's only played on special occasions by our appointed fiddler to the Bachelors Club. Until recently this was Wallace Galbraith, however he has recently handed the reins to Alistair McCulloch of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Unfortunately we would not be able to allow you to play this instrument on a visit to the Museum, although you would be able to see it on display most of the time. Presently it is New York with Alistair and being played at fundraising events for the Trust, it will be back on display later in April.
Do you accept dogs?

We (two) are staying in Inverkip and can easily get ourselves down for a day by train or car.
What is the best way to experience this? Just show up at the Museum and buy tickets? Book in advance? Book a tour?
We would appreciate any information that you can give us. thank you.

I'll be visiting with a group from Edinburgh, but would like to make a day trip out of it and be back to Edinburgh in time for a Ceilidh dance starting at 7:30. I understand this means I'll have to be at the Ayr train station by about 4:30, so I'm just wondering how much time at the museum is appropriate for a group of roughly 10 American university students who will be receiving a lecture from the professor traveling with the group. Any feedback or helpful tips you can provide are greatly appreciated.

Depends on the weather how long you will spend at this attraction as the gardens are a major part of the attraction but not if wet. As to the time taken to get back to Edinburgh then I suggest you look at the Railway timetable which will tell you when you could arrive back in Edinburgh. The bus service from this attraction is hourly!!My husband and I walked from Ayr (about 2 miles) to the attraction and took the bus back as it was then raining
