Planned to camp here for two nights 8th-10th September. When we arrived we found a place to camp lochside that wasn't too far from the car which was great. However, we couldnt help but notice the entire site including the car park, around the shore, all through the forest was covered in litter. There were dirty wipes, tissues (obvisouly used for the toilet), food wrappers, bottle caps, broken glass and old fishing wire everywhere. The site was horrible. This was our first time camping in a permit zone in scotland and it felt the rangers had given up protecting the permit zones for campers and were maybe spending there time looking after the zones where people don't normally camp. We wild camp alot around Scotland and we had to leave the following morning because it was that filthy.

We went today. It was lovely but avoid it at the weekend when the weather is nice! There was a queue of cars for 45+ minutes to get in, which really tainted the experience.
The reason for the queue was there is only 1 (unmanned) ticket machine which caused huge delays and sadly no doubt loads of unnecessary pollution. Simple solution: they should let you buy tickets online in advance or signs along the entrance to let you pay online as you drive up to the entrance. Poorly thought out and nobody around, a lot of people turned and left as the traffic was moving very slowly. Awful start but a nice finish swimming in the loch. I'd imagine it's perfect during the week when less busy. Some of the toilet blocks were closed also which is a surprise during the busy time.

So beautiful. A lovely drive. Lots of pull out, so you can take pictures. We spent an hour and a half driving & stopping and taking in the beauty. You can take a picnic and enjoy the day. Highly recommend. Take water and snacks

A stunning drive and great value for £3 going to Forestry. The view of the Lochs are amazing but midges are plentiful in the wetland areas. Take a slow drive and enjoy the views

We stayed in 3 different motorhome spots across the week (with a night at Cashel on Loch Lomond to empty/fill/shower & climb Ben Lomond mid trup). First night at permit spot M at the exit gate. A 10 min walk from the camping loos & washing up area, and 25 mins walk from Achray Farm ice-cream (which is a MUST!). Also, Ben A'an is easy reaching distance from permit spot M to walk.
Then 2 nights at permit spot F, for my money the best location in the forest. I set an alarm to book it as you can only book 4 weeks in advance. The couple arriving to take the spot from us had done the same, apparently having been to the forest before & also worked this out as the best spot. From here, the sun is facing you the whole day, you can easily see the kids playing in Loch Drunkie & it's a 20-min walk/10 min bike ride with kids to the toilets.
After our night out, we had last 3 nights at permit spot L. We couldn't get into our intended location (near the fishing permit sign/closer to the loos) as there are 2 for L, so we were in the lay-by just past the cattle grid couldn't see the Loch (Achray) & so had to take chairs down & set up to keep an eye on them. Midges were also worst here of the 3 locations.
Rangers were all great, really helpful, kind & friendly. All v easy-going.
Only had permits checked once in the whole stay, on the sunny Friday evening before we were leaving.
We biked, paddleboarded, climbed a few hills (Ben A'an, Ben Lomond, Ben Ledi).
The 8 year old grand daughter thoroughly enjoyed herself, as did our mini labradoodle.
Had incredible weather, having spent a small fortune on waterproof clothing & waterproofing existing gear, we didn't need a coat the entire week!
Get Smidge spray & take antihistamines daily first thing as the midges are out. Cover up with long arm tops & leggings!
What a superb set up, the forest is stunning, it was so quiet, peaceful & complete bliss (apart from the midges!)

After we finally found £3 in change to pay (couldn’t work out how to pay via card) things were fine, there are lots of places to stop and enjoy the view, we’d also taken a picnic, there are some toilet roughly half way around which was handy. These are unmade roads so take your time.

Don't bother paying for a permit to camp. Twice now we have paid for permits to arrive and someone already be camping on the pitch. Rangers do not care and cannot be bothered to do there job then get all shouty and up I'm your face if you dare to question them. No one available over the phone in the evening or incase of am emergency. Waste of time and money travelling there to have to come home without staying.

Went past this drive on many occasions but popped in today. Had a leisurely drive but it is a forest track with numerous potholes. Loads of places to stop and take in the views. Visited the farm for an ice cream. After the farm a herd of goats went sauntering past. I've marked it down from 5 to 4 due to the potholes but don't let this put you off, it is well worth a visit.

Does anyone know where you park now if you go to three lochs forest drive? Website says the road is closed but walkable...I want to take the kids though so though I assume you can park in Aberfoyle and walk the 2 miles to the start of the trail, I don't think they would have much energy left for walking any further by then! Can you park any closer? Hope someone can help! Thank you x

About 60 minutes to 90 depending on how many stops are made.
It’s only about 7 miles but it has a 10 mile speed limit. So 90 minutes max.

Glasgow to Aberfoyle is about an hour. Edinburgh to Aberfoyle is 1hr 20mins Roughly. The roads to Aberfoyle are mainly 2 lanes one in each direction so be aware of speed limit, people walking atling the side of the roads, cyclists and the odd horse rider. The roads are winding with passing points, take advantage of these to admire our countryside, and enjoy the views.

can it be done in a motorhome

It is a single track road one way only. It's narrow but probably ok. You can always check at the visitor centre at the bottom of the road from aberfoyle turn off to loch katrine.

The official opening hours for Forest drive is 10am - 4 pm. There drive is gated at both ends and the access gate (it's a one way system) is in theory closed at 4 pm the exit gate possibly an hour later. In practice the gates are often open later. An entrance fee or £2 is required via a parking meter at the entrance, you can return as many time as you wish that day.
It is possible to stay overnight inside forest drive if you are camping, or if you have a motor home, this requires you to purchase a permit online at an additional cost of £3 per night.
There are 4 motorhome spaces and a large number of camping areas. some camping areas are very poor, others are excellent. Search "Loch Lomond Get a Permit" for more details.

is there anything for small children

The countryside is full of excitement and wonder for small children. Collecting treasures along the way, riding on shoulders, jumping off logs and climbing trees. Great place for riding bikes too as there is very little traffic and what there is drives slowly to admire the views.
