Many years ago I walked around Iona. The western side of the island is largely machair ( sand dunes with rough grass, cropped short by grazing animals). We knew nothing of the golf course and were consequently rather surprised to find a flag sticking out of a hole in the ground for no apparent reason. Shortly we found other similar flags sticking out of holes in the ground and realised that this was, indeed, a golf course, but a course unlike anything we had ever encountered before. It appeared to have no recognisable greens, just eighteen flags sticking out of holes in the short grass. Quite where the tees were I couldn't determine at all. It also seemed to require no greenkeepers, though there was a small hut, which was just about big enough to store the flags in, but otherwise would have had difficulty accomodating a medium sized lawnmower. What it did do was explain why golf was invented in Scotland and played on coastal courses. Before Victorian times the only way to cut grass was with a sickle. There was no such thing as mowers. Golf requires short grass, certainly shorter than can be obtained from a sickle cut, and a reasonably firm surface. This is provided by the machair, which is almost unique to the Scottish coast. The dunes provide interest and natural sand bunkers if somebody wishes to dig them out. The machair is grazed tight by rabbits and sheep. Indeed, it is clear that the holes in golf courses would originally have been abandoned rabbit holes.... and why is a golf ball white do you think? Play Iona and you'll find out. The course is covered with rabbit and sheep droppings. A golf ball, being white, can be easily distinguished from them. This must be the kind of course that golf was played on originally: Unmanicured, as nature made it, as animals use it, completely unlike anything you'll find in any other course in the world and a real step back in time to the origins of the sport. But please, don't ask me if it's any good as a golf course. Personally, I can't stand the game.

Winds howling over the rough holes, manicured by countless sheep. A golfing experience you won't have anywhere else. The place has something magic.

Far far away from the manicured golf courses you may be used to is Iona. The greens are indistinguishable from the fairways (or for that matter anywhere else). However the scenery is breathtaking and you're immediately transported to days gone by.

Fashioned from the Machair this is an outstanding natural golf course. It is also populated by sheep and cows, with associated natural droppings. It is truly magnificent and dates back to 1909. It is also free, or £1 if you wish a scorecard (obtained from the Post Office). A challenging 18 holes if there ever was one. Golfers will be take great pride in spreading the word, about the Iona golf Course. A more scenic golf course, you will never find.

I it possible to rent golf clubs on the island? Ur on Mull or Oban? We will be travelling from overseas and will not be able to bring our clubs. Thanks
