‪Poignant memorial to US soldiers who lost their lives in sinkings in WWI. Good interpretation and historical descriptions. Worth seeing.‬

‪My hubby and I are first timers on Islay. When looking for ideas in what to do and see we saw the American monument. A lovely walk up to the monument and usually spectacular views but not today for us due to the weather. However definitely worth a walk. We were very moved reading the memorial to the American sailors who lost their lives during WWI.‬

‪Lovely two mile round-trip hike through a bird sanctuary with fantastic views over Islay. On a clear day you can easily see the Kintyre Peninsula and Northern Ireland. The monument itself is dedicated to the tragic sinking of two US troop ships in WWI. ‬

‪Stunning views and a lovely walk.

We visited here in July 2021. If you walk the most direct route, which is well signposted, it’ll take approx 20 mins to get to the monument from the car park. There’s also a circular route which we didn’t do.

The path through the fields is mostly a narrow gravel path. Further on there’s a wooden footpath/bridge over the boggy areas which helps keep your feet clean.

If you bring a dog you should keep it on the lead as there’s sheep and cattle in the fields you walk through.

The road to the car park is a gravel track and you’ll need to keep your speed right down to avoid throwing up the loose stones.

Well worth a visit.‬

‪Well worth a walk up - about 20 mins up and 20 mins down. The views are stunning and the Monument is very impressive (history also fascinating). Make sure it's a clear day so you get the full views!‬

‪We did the circular walk in an anti-clockwise direction and we had great pictures of the superb monument and it was relatively straightforward . The information about the monument is fascinating and tragic as it depicts Americans who lost their lives at sea on two troop ships. The walk back gave great views of the rigged coastal landscape.‬

‪The circular tour from the carpark at the Mull of OA leads you to the rugged cliffs from where in the distance you can see the north west coast of Northern Ireland. If you do the walk in a clockwise direction you rise up towards the cliffs and then suddenly the view appears. Very wet and muddy underfoot when we were there with lots of cattle and sheep so good shoes a must. The monument itself is interesting especially due to the tragic history it portrays. Unfortunately we did not see the golden eagles which are apparently nesting in the area. The walk back to the carpark is much easier as a wooden boardwalk has been built most of the way back.‬

‪The walk from the car park to the monument is around a mile and although the day was a bit wet and very windy it was a good bracing walk

The views back across the land and out to sea are superb particularly the raw and wild beauty of the Mull of Oa

The monument itself which commemorates the several hundred lives lost from 2 troop ships in 1918 is very impressive.

It was built by the American Red Cross and honouring their military is something the Americans seem to do particularly well‬

‪Easy walking trail which is well signposted.
Good car parking. The best bit is the dramatic coastal cliffs which then lead you to the monument. We had a beautiful sunny day and the light and atmosphere on The Mull of Oa is just stunning. Well worth the effort to explore this part of Islay. If you are worried about the walk, there is a short section with a boardwalk style track leading directly to the monument so you don’t have to complete the whole trail. ‬

‪Fabulous location for a walk, although it was a gale-force wind when we visited. A circular 2mile walk is signed, to the Memorial and along the cliffs. Well signed but wet underfoot (walking boots preferable). Cattle and sheep around

Parking asks for a donation‬
