Had a beautiful day for the walk across the sand and up to the highest point. Views were excellent of Iona and the mountains of Mull. You could see Skerrivor lighthouse with the naked eye. I used the route described in Walkhighlands. I noticed that there is now parking available at Knockvologan Farm further on which would save a bit of road walking. Nice lunch at Fionnphort afterwards.

Had a walk over to the island while the tide was out. Amazing beach causeway and the kids loved the fact the sat nav said they were walking on water. Collected some nice shells and had a nice wander around

We purely came here to swim in the sea between Erraid and Mull. The walk to get here from Knockvologan takes about 10 minutes, be careful in bad weather as the path immediate from the farm is rocky and steep, however in regular weather it's perfectly fine.
I was really confused about getting here and the first time I tried a few weeks back, I went completely the wrong way. If you get to the bottom of the path from the farm and you go right, stick to the grass, walk along the grass and you can't miss it, the first beach you get to is the pass between Mull and Erraid. I have been told that even when the tide comes in, you'll still be able to walk across, just wear wellies (or I suppose go barefoot!)
When we arrived there was a family of 4 but they left almost as soon as we got there, so we had about 3 hours just the two of us, it was amazing. On a boiling, roasting, sunny Sunday in the summer holidays, I thought it would be busy but I was wrong. Made for a really special lunch out.

I just re-visited Erraid, where I lived in 1979 for a year! It is a magical island and is much the same. It is quiet, rugged, peaceful with breathless views. If you go to Mull, drive all the way to Fionnaphort, then to Erraid, and time it at low tide and then you can walk across from Mull to Erraid.

The road up to the parking spot near the farm at Knockvologan is an experience but worth the effort!
Once we found the parking spot we enjoyed a fantastic afternoon walking on the island. We were fortunate to have clear blue skies and although it was quite boggy the walk up to the very top, well above the observatory, was rewarded by fantastic 360degree views over Iona, Mull and even across to Colonsay and Islay to the south.
When walking across the sands be patient and take time at the waters edge to look for the seals bobbing in the water or sunbathing on the rocks.
Check the tide times before setting off. We set off about 90 minutes after high tide by which time it was already possible to cross over the sand to the island, giving us plenty of time to explore.

We spent a wonderful afternoon walking to and enjoying Erraid. There's always something special about being able to walk to an island and this one is particularly evocative, given the literary link to Robert Louis Stevenson and the spectacular starting point from Knockvologan beach. We used walking highlands which provides a clear explanation of where to start, however once on the island we explored freely, fettered only by tide times. It happened to be a great day for a picnic and an absolutely unparalleled setting. If you're staying close to Fionnphort, in my view it's an absolute must!

First off, I wanted to add this to my review of Mull, which I hastily posted. So, I haven't been to Erraid.
Though our boat from Iona did sail around Erraid.
Erraid can actually be reached by land from Mull, on low tide.
Just give yourself time (and preparation) to return to Mull before the tide rises.

The detailed walk instructions for Erraid are in the small brown "favourite walks on Mull and Iona" book available in all good tourist shops on the island and a worthwhile investment. Pronounced "Errrid" you will need to check the tide times online before you set off. If you're walking from Fidden, start one hour after high tide. If you're going from the farmer's car park in Knockvologan, two hours after high tide will do. By this point the tide will have started to recede revealing acres of ribbled white sand, enabling you to walk around the headland to reach the tidal island.
On the way, the sands will be studded with sea shells that young hands will love to find. Sand castle making would also be very good fun. Older children and adults will love scrambling over the rocks. You could just stay here and have a picnic. But the more intrepid will step onto Erraid and begin the walk to its summit (which takes about 40 minutes). There are cows and sheep everywhere. The path is in distinct at times, but the part near the cottage has various wooden bridges over the boggy parts. Then walk along the row of cottage gardens and then begin your ascent up the hill. Eventually on your right, wonky stone steps will take you up to yhe observation point where you can explore the white observation hut (and shelter from the rain to eat your lunch if necessary!) don't bother trying to find the summit beyond this as described in the book - it's a boggy mess and the views from the observation point are more than enough to reward your efforts. My pictures say it all! If you have timed it right you will still have several hours to make your way back before the tide turns.
Ps - when you first get onto the beach following the track from the car park, look out for the bank of sand martins nests in summer. Fascinating to watch these small birds whizz in and out of the cliff!

Had a great day visiting here. The walk was spectacular and scenic, you felt as if you were the only person who had done it, as we saw nobody else, once we left the farm. The island is most interesting, with the Stephenson connection. Care with the tide time is most important, otherwise I think it could be dangerous. We asked at our B&B for expert advice.

Yes. You should go an hour after high tide. It will give you plenty of time to get to the top and back.
There is a route on Walkhighlands.
