We had a fantastic morning exploring Dumbarton Castle. Make sure you have good walking boots and waterproofs for wild, wet days as most of the site is outside.

You should visit this lovely castle in Scotland on a sunny day. Get ready to climb and take in the breathtaking view. We saw everything from stadiums to ship lodges in the distance, and the stunning vista over the River Clyde is captivating. What a singular experience!

My wife and i had been looking forward to this and it didn't disappoint. Only £7.50 each for adults and £3.50 for the guide book was also good value. Be prepared for lots of steps and plenty of climbing but well worth it because of the amazing views across the 'firth of clyde'

This place has a lot of stairs to walk up. I don't think that you can go to the top of the hills if you have mobility problems as there must be about 500+ steps. You can see over the river Clyde from certain sections when you to the top of the 2 hills. There's not very much to explore those you can see old cannons and you can get to go in the guard house and see some history regarding the castle. There's is toilets and a shop on site we went on a Sunday and last entry was at 15:15 so if anybody turned up after I'm not sure if they would have been let in or not.

We visited this castle because we have known about it for years but never got round to visiting it until now. What a great castle! Entry was £7.50 per adult and once in we had the freedom to roam anywhere. The castle has been built over a volcanic plug sitting at the confluence of the rivers Leven and Clyde has a long and interesting history with multiple display boards explaining the relevance of the various structures but the best element was the amazing views to be had from the battlements and the trig point at the very top.
As a word of caution, it must be noted that this castle is totally unsuitable for people with reduced mobility as there are over 650 (in some places very steep) steps to negotiate across the castle and no alternative paths. The lack of prohibition signs was refreshing when compared to larger more famous castles.

I booked online yesterday and arrived today by train, only to find out that the site was closed due to wind. I knew this could be a possibility but I assumed that they would notify ticket holders in the morning if they decided to close. I did receive an email, but only after I had left Dumbarton on the train to return to Stirling. The email did say I would receive a refund for my ticket but that it could take up to 30 days!
The sad part is that if it's closed, there's absolutely NOTHING to see--no displays, no view of the castle from the ground, not even a pamphlet---nothing. The woman working at the desk clearly knew nothing about the site to make matters worse. Even the toilets were shut--not sure how the wind affects that!
Given that this seems to happen with some regularity, you'd think Historic Scotland would come up with something to at least give visitors a token experience for their effort to get there. But no.

Thanks for your review.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of our historic sites, sometimes we need to close in short notice to keep our staff and visitors safe. Staff performed wind checks with an anemometer at different parts of the site to check the conditions on the day of your visit. As the wind speeds in the upper half of the castle were consistently high (30+mph and southerly) that morning, the site manager took the decision to close the upper half, but initially kept the less exposed lower half open free of charge. As conditions worsened, it eventually became clear around midday that the whole site would need to close and was for the rest of the day.
In this case, we were able to notify visitors in advance of this closure. This closure was advertised on our website and app and pre-booked ticketholders were contacted via email as soon as our ticketing team were notified of the closure in the morning.
The wording on the email states ‘Please allow up to 30 days for the funds to show on your bank statement’. The refunds for this closure were processed the same day, but the length of time for the money to show varies depending on the individual bank and is beyond our control. 30 days is the maximum amount of time it should take for the refund to show in the account but in the majority of cases, it is within a much shorter timeframe.
We are sorry you were unable to visit the whole of the site on the day of your visit, and we are sorry to hear that the site did not live up to expectations. The castle’s exhibition spaces are currently under renovation so it is mostly an outdoor experience at the moment. However, there are interpretation boards by the front gate and in the hall/shop of the Governor’s house which give overviews of the Castle’s history and layout. We also sell guidebooks and offer an information sheet with a shorter summary on request to visitors and the Stewards are happy to answer questions about the site.
Thanks again for taking the time to leave a review. If you wish to make a formal complaint, please contact us at complaints@hes.scot and we'll be happy to take this forward for you. Details of our full complaints process can be found on our website.

We had pre-booked and received an email advising that the upper Bailey would be closed due to strong winds. We went for a look anyway. We were able to see the lower areas and the wall walk. There was no entrance fee because of the reduced access. It was interesting to read the information boards about the building between the two crags. Great Medieval fortress.

Dumbarton Castle was closed for essential maintenance works from 15 July to the end of the July. It has now reopened.

What a surprise. Not only the location, but also its position and the size of the plot. Be warned there are 500 steps starting from ground level up to the ticket office, and further slopes should you wish to do it all. The are handrails in most places and seats dotted around.
We didn't quite do it all, but climb one "peak" with the magazine a the top which was perfectly adequate for getting an idea of the site, and seeing the surrounding land. Not much in the buildings, it more about what it stood for.
The main issue is parking. We went on a Saturday and were very lucky to park as there was a bowls match on which meant most spaces were taken. There is parking further down the road but then it's a walk. There is also limited space for turning, so don't even try with a large camper van!!.

When will the maintenance work be done so that the Spur, Spanish battery area and the Governor's House are not the only thing to see/explore?
كُتب بتاريخ 4 أغسطس 2019
Heard it was meant to be finished by September

Is there a carpark at the castle?
Thank you.
كُتب بتاريخ 16 أبريل 2019
There is ample parking.
If you cannot park at the castle entrance (bowling green), round the back of the castle (5min walk) is the parking aeea for the football stadium.

It is a lovely place, but probably one of the least accessible I have been to. Sorry!

can I exchange a Scottish Hertiage Pass voucher for the actual pass here?
كُتب بتاريخ 11 سبتمبر 2018
This is a historic Scotland sight as far as I know there is no exchange between the different historical caretakers. If you do have a voucher for Historic Scotland I do not believe it can be exchanged here. To the best of my knowledge it can only be exchanged at a couple of the major sites such as Edinburgh or Stirling. If you send an e-mail to historic Scotland they are very good at replying.
