The venue is dead easy to find with plenty of free parking.
The front door is at the top of a flight of stairs - not wheelchair accessible. Inside there are steps too.
Entry is through a well stocked shop. This building houses a testing tank used in local ship building.
Along side the tank there are a number of rooms / galleries that document the history. Once your visit is done, give the cafe a shot. We found the service to be good and the prices very good compared to other museum facilities.
Reading through the literature I noted that they also offer a woodworking school on a Tuesday and have plans to start a rowing school in traditional locally built wooden skiffs.
Pleased to support something local.

Over 150 years of innovation and entrepreneurship from William Denny and Brothers is celebrated here. Where the vast shipyard once stood there are 3 full floors to explore. Centre stage is the Ship Model Experiment Tank but immerse yourself in the world of Bulbous Bows, Propellers, Paddle Wheels ,Mechanical and Speed Trials , Instruments and tools.
Stunning model ships docked here and there. A model masterpiece by students at the college of Building and Printing captures the Leven Yard in its 1930s boom years.
The top floor has a 'Dream Destinations' Exhibition of Clyde Coast Holiday History. Find out what an 'Ivanhoe' was -gulp !
Back downstairs to the Skylark 1X Recovery Project's Workshop. XXL thanks to James who showed me round and told me all about this special charity.
Fantastic staff here. Master mariners all. Great coffee and gingerbread to finish the voyage. This Shipbuilding Story in Dumbarton is a page turner !

This is a small museum but nevertheless very interesting for anyone interested in the history of ship building on the Clyde. For us the best aspect was that it had the feel of a time capsule where everything was as it was on the last day of work. The office looked like a pre computer age office was and the workshop was full of manual tools. It would have been good to have been able to get a close view of the tank itself ( it being the reason for the building ) but it is understandable that it would nave been difficult to make it safe for visitors. A miniature version was available to experiment with.

Such a surprise to have so much of historical interest in such a small footprint. The museum, as well as having the large Denny Tank, provides a fascinating, and in places 'hands on' experience of the industrial, technical and social history of the site. It's well-laid out and labelled, and with a little initial guidance from the friendly and helpful staff, easy to navigate your way around. Definitely somewhere we'll return to in the future.

This is a very unusual and intriguing place to visit. The test tank is so interesting to see, and there are also many artefacts to see, including machines used to shape the wax hull models, drawing instruments and a wood model of the Denny shipyard that was once on this site. The historical interpretation is excellent. The member of staff who gave us an introduction to the museum was extremely knowledgeable and welcoming. There is also a nice little cafe with vintage china. Exceptionally good value for only £5. We spent an hour and a half here.

Visited for a few hours and a great wee museum as well. Staff excellent, gave us a brief history of museum before we looked about as well. Would recommend if in the area.

This little museum was fascinating. It even had a cat's head from the Cutty Sark.
You could see how and where they crafted model ships and tested them before building the ship that the model portrayed.
Our visit was made even more special by the interaction with the commercial manager Chris who happened by chance to be on duty there and who happily answered all our questions.

We visit Scotland every year and coming here is our family tradition each year. It never disappoints and is very well maintained. It's great to explore time an time again. If you visit it deserves a donation to ensure it's kept up to this standard. It's free entry, however the tall ship attraction now charges, this was a disappointment.

It wasn't my idea to visit, but I was happy to tag along with friends and I this was a totally unexpected gem that I loved.
The welcoming and knowledgeable staff gave us a brief explanation and then left us to explore.
I loved seeing the tank, but also all the other history in the building. Its such a shame that there were only 5 people there on the morning we were there and that more people don't learn about the history of the tank and its importance to the industry in the local area and the history of shipbuilding.
