I recommend visiting this place. I went with my girlfriend and did not know what to expect. It is a very interesting and fascinating place to walk around. The staff are really friendly. I would say it would be best to go as soon as it opens as we had the place virtually to ourselves. A very important part of Corks history and one of the best places to visit.

Great museum, with a very informative and interesting audio tour. I'd recommend to people visiting Cork

We visited the former prison and went on a guided tour (€8 per person) that lasted 45 minutes. The tour was highly informative and was told through the lives of the prisoners that were held at the prison. The building has a small gift shop, audiovisual presentation, supplemental informational panels on walls and some interactive games. Highly recommend!

I don't know why but I expected a lot less of an experience when we started the tour. What an amazing a day we had! The staff were unbelievably friendly, the gaol itself was incredibly evocative thanks to the personable stories and the historical restoration. It is close to the city centre and easy to find. Definitely a jewel in Cork's crown. Highly recommended.

Il vecchio carcere di Cork, in parte restaurato ma con parti che sono rimaste originali. Nelle celle sono presenti dei manichini e tramite l'audoguida è possibile ascoltare diverse storie su alcuni detenuti. All'esterno si può passeggiare e girare intorno al carcere.

This is another must-see place in Cork and well worth the visit. It is on the edge of town but not too far to walk. We approached it from the opposite bank of the River Lee and found the best place to cross to access the prison was the “Shaky” bridge, which is an attraction in itself!
The tour is really good with the guide which you get with your entrance ticket ensuring that you see all the places of interest. You progress through the prison from the ground to the first floor and then up to the area which was used in the final stages of the building as Cork’s radio broadcasting station until the building closed until its renovation into what you see today. Their is a small gift shop and then the chance to explore the inner courtyard and grounds with the Former exercise yard, infirmary, debtors prison and other wings of the gaol.
Well worth the visit!

This was such a fun and interesting place to visit. So much history packed into this building. It reminded me of the Alcatraz tour in San Francisco. I will say that I was a bit disappointed in the halloween decorations that they had out up. There was a scavenger hunt they were doing for the kids which was awesome, however the skeletons and ghosts kind of messed up the aesthetic of my photos.

Fascinating place well worth a visit, it's a good couple of hours to wander around and take it all in, it's been done up very well so you get the feel of the hardship and depressive place it would have been in its day. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable

It was raining persistently when we decided to trek up to Cork City Gaol. We found that it is a decent walk from the city centre. By the time we got there, we were cold and wet. There is a fair amount to see, its generally explained well and interesting. They use wax figures in the cells as example prisoners to explain how imprisonment impacted a cross-section of people. I would not say it was a trip highlight, but we learned something from this visit. They do serve some refreshments, and the hot drink was appreciated.

There is safe parking outside the prison complex.

Hi Yes you can park on street which is free for up to 2 hours.
Is your 5pm closing time last admissions time or is it time to get out lights are been switched of time

Hi Michael, 5pm is our last admission time unless we have an evening event then it may be slightly earlier. I would recommend contacting us before your visit just in case.
How tall are the mannequins?

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately the buses are on strike at the moment. You can get the Hop on Hop off bus which stops right outside the Gaol. If you wish to walk from the city centre it would take approx 30 minutes. Thank you.
