The fact that this was one of my favorite places during a 2 1/2 week trip to Israel was a total suprise, but the guide was so outstanding that everyone on the tour throughly enjoyed the visit and learned a lot. The Ayalon Institute was an underground munitions factory hidden on a kibbutz. The workers risked their lives to manufacture the bullets that the Palmach needed to defend the country from the invading Arab armies. The original equipment is still hidden and the stories of individual and group heroism were inspiring. I definately recommend this site to provide a peek into life in Israel before independence.

You need to call or email ahead to make a reservation for a tour. We managed to book an English tour after emailing a few times and finally getting a response. The history behind this kibbutz is extremely interesting and the Ayalon Institute has done a nice job of preserving this site that is an important part of Israel’s modern history.
It looks like the Institute used part of the time during the pandemic to modernize some of the exhibit spaces, including a main building that is still under construction. We visited on a Friday afternoon right before Shabbat. The tour guide was very good, but tours are done in large groups and some of the other people distracted from the experience. Because they were closing immediately after the tour we didn’t get an opportunity to wander around the grounds which we would have like to do.

It is an interesting story, and good to go and see it for yourself as you can see how the entrance is hidden under the laundry etc. You have to go on a tour which cost me 30 NIS. The tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. They showed a 10 min video explaining the history/story and then you went to see the factory, the whole tour took just under an hour. There is not much else to see in the rest of the kibbutz.
It was good to visit, but it is out of the way. I visited as I happened to be in Rehovot, but it is probably not worth coming from a long way away just to see this as there is not too much to see, and it doesn't take long.

אנחנו מסתובבים באותו המקום, יורדים בסולם, חווים את התחושות. המוזיאון עצמו מאוד ממחיש.

An important museum to learn about the establishment of the state of Israel. You are shown how the ammunition for the Independence War was manufactured in a secret location. The guided tours are given by very knowledgable guides. Suitable for all age from 10 year olds to grandparents. Wonderful outing for the entire family. Make sure to reserve a place on the tour in advance.

The Ayalon Institute Bullet Factory is roughly a 45-minute drive south of the airport in Rehovot. Here a fascinating one-hour tour, booked in advance, told of the struggle for the establishment of the State of Israel. This tour was a highlight in our three-week trip.
Under the nose of the British an underground factory was built for the production of bullets that would be used by special forces unit of the Haganah. The site was at the top of a hill in the middle of a kibbutz. A bakery building concealed the ammunition factory below, roughly 75 x 25 feet. In a nearby building a laundry’s commercial-sized washing machine concealed a circular iron stairway through which 45 workers secretly went in and out. Laundry noise also served to disguise factory sounds. Even most members of the kibbutz were not aware of the goings on lest the British, who inspected periodically, get wind of it. From 1945 until 1948, more than four million bullets were produced and sent to other locations in readiness for the war to come. Our guide took us around portions of the kibbutz, into the bakery and laundry, and down into the factory itself. She emphasized the courage and sacrifice. This is one place you have to see to appreciate.

This was an interesting and educational experience with a great guide. She was very knowledgeable about the history surrounding the factory as well as about the equipment that was present. She answered all questions. She presented several bits of the history as amusing stories. The length of the tour is sufficient to convey a lot of information, but not so long as to become boring. I recommend this tour to everyone.
