‪Small but worth a visit. Ground floor better organised than upstairs which felt a bit random almost. Free entry which is always a bonus.‬

‪We were in Gloucester for the first time so we dropped in to the museum to get a sense of the city's history. We were very impressed, both by the lovely welcoming staff and the excellent historical displays, covering every period from the Romans to the Saxons to the Civil War and beyond. A very fine small museum. Highly recommended.‬

‪I'm from Gloucester and have just moved back here. I remember volunteering at this place during my uni summer holidays and always remembered it being a bit so-so, but seeing as I've moved back I thought I'd give it a go and was (mostly) pleasantly surprised.

The downstairs has the obligatory dinosaurs/geology/taxidermied animals that you get in every museum like this. But the rest of the pre-historic, Roman and medieval displays were great (maybe a few missing labels here and there) and definitely made me appreciate Gloucester as a place and appreciate its history.

Upstairs though...well, it's like they've got all these other random artefacts from the post-medieval/modern periods that they forgotten they have to put on display so they've just shoved them in an unengaging big room willy nilly. It's not enough to spoil my enjoyment of the place, but 99% of that enjoyment is from the stuff on the ground floor.‬

‪Frankly, a bit underwhelming. Lots of exhibits, but most unlabelled and described which is pointless. Those signs there are have random typefaces, often too small to read. Some displays such as the by-gone Gloucester at the bottom of the stairs hidden by pop up posters. In the Roman room several sounds (eg a commentary, and a separate scenescape) compete so none can be appreciated. Collections are jumbled. Dinosaurs and early animals downstairs. But upstairs next to money and weights and measures is a random collection of taxidermy. Loads of children running around and screaming, banging on cabinets, no sign of parents in control (and no sign to ask them to control). No dogs - that's old fashioned for a visitor attraction. ‬

‪A poster in the foyer mentioned a span from Palaeolithic 25000 BC to modern times. So very exciting.

From the arrival of Romans in the first half of the first century CE many artefacts documenting their lives have been discovered. Funereal plaques and graves beside Roman walls are displayed.

Face pots that were part of a religious cult and brought by soldiers from the Rhineland are striking and intriguing. A particular treasure is the Tables Game that is an early version of backgammon and it has the distinction of being the oldest complete set in the world.

Moving along the timeline there are modern sculptures including Head by Mark Atkins, Lynn Chadwick’s Beast IX and a charming Ozzie the Owl by Alan Jack.‬

‪MUSEUM (5 stars)
The museum itself was a pleasant find, lots of intereseting, well displayed things for all ages. We only discovered it because we came to see the Brick History of Britain exhibition. I'd never been before, so this was a very pleasant discovery and well worth a visit. It is free.

BRICK HISTORY OF BRITAIN (1 star)
This was very disappointing and, in our opinion, very over priced. The exhibition is a small collection of lego builds in one room which took 20 minutes to look at (we read every information sign to try and extend it!). We found about half the exhibits very underwhelming and tiny. The Titanic model and Wright brothers plane were incredibly small....they could have been SO much bigger and more interesting. There were some larger scale builds that were a lot more interesting. As the exhibition is supposed to be about the history of Britain it would have been interesting if the builds had been displayed in chronological order, so you walk through history, rather than being randomly placed around the edge of the room. There is a lego board on the wall for children to play with which could extend your visit if you have children. However for 2 lego loving adults it was a disappointing, and very expensive, 20 minutes.‬

‪This is a pretty typical county museum. Entry is free. It's strongest element is telling the story of the Roman city but there are some interesting cases on prehistory and medieval times. Beyond that it rather peters out - upstairs covers more recent events but is principally a display of furniture and some stuffed animals.‬

‪To go from pre-historical times to the present day without overwhelming the viewer is quite an achievement. This museum does that with carefully curated artefacts and good explanations. Not many city museums get it as good as this. An easy place to spend an hour or two.‬

‪Excellent civic museum with very special exhibits on the long history of the city. I was particularly impressed with the sections on Roman Britain and the explanation of why Glevum (Gloucester) was such a critical location. Having previously lived in a C18th part of Gloucester, I was very interested in the English Civil War, and the siege of the city, in particular, and the museum helped explain how Gloucester was involved in the coming of the Commonwealth.‬

‪Museum itself very interesting and accessible throughout on mobility scooter. Amazing that it was free, Grandchildren (four aged 6-13) liked dress up in Star Wars exhibit but after 25mins (played Uno & other drawing/games) we were finished so £26.50 was a bit expensive for such a small one room display. Wouldn’t recommend paying for the exhibit unless you are a huge fan.‬
