‪Thank you to all the friendly staff today that made our Daughters day. Its her 10th birthday so she chose a small party with a group of friends.

The party was led by very polite and friendly staff where the children fed the lambs, held some chickens, had a ride on the tractor and trailer, had a visit to the Meerkats and then had a buffet for tea. The food was to a good standard and was plentiful. There's a good shop on site that sells dairy products from the farm, we thoroughly recommend the milk shakes.

‪I was significantly disappointed by our visit today, which we only made because of so many positive recommendations.

Firstly, it's a working farm yes. Which is great and definitely authentic. But the public facilities are also very working farm. Dirty, dank and dingy toilets, and eating areas are very dated. I have a potty training age child, and had to kneel in dead insects, ground water and and filtg during every toilet visit. I can forgive this as most of the time people aren't kneeling on bathroom floors, but I was very close to seeing the state of things even at first opening.

Another issue that is also forgivable, and maybe we just came on a bad day. But when we arrived at opening there were atleast 6 school groups there. I am very sure this increased through the day. And this meant every part of the farm was dominated by these groups, and there were just too many people around. I understand the financial incentive of this, but it was a big downer on our experience. I work in museums and we have caps on school groups depending on the site size. I recommend you cap to 3 a day.

The signage is awful. You have a good map online. Maybe put a few up on the grounds?

But what I couldn't forgive was the conditions for the animals. So I understand the normal farm conditions, the indoor areas and calfs/lambs separated from mums. I've seen that elsewhere. But I think I became worried when it came to the "non farm animals". The staff it pet corner were great, but it was a machine for the animals and I found it horrific. It upset me to the verge of tears. Way too many children for a start, it was impossible for the 3 workers to ensure important handling standards across the approx 40 children (many toddlers and babies), 20+ adults in the room. This is vital for animal welfare. It was very noisy. A special educational needs group in the room with us were visibly disturbed by the noise and scared of the enslaught of animals. You should have run a separate, smaller, quiet session for them with more 1 on 1 handling support. An owl shouldn't be mauled by 100+ people every day. They shouldn't really be stroked at all. I was worried for the safety of these animals.
I was also concerned for the donkeys. They were well controlled and appeared healthy, but with the 6+ school groups, they were all constantly being ridden in the 4 hours we were there and I felt uncomfortable about it.
But then I went it the "reptile room", a forgotten dark corner of the site and I was shocked. The pythons were in a filthy enclosure which a lot of poo and shed skins that had clearly been around for a while. The enclosures were tiny and cheaply constructed with raw screws jutting out, and peeling plastic grass. The "unusual" animals in the outdoor area are housed in tiny, old, dingy enclosures with little coverage and absolutely no greenery. For the owls in particular, this is unacceptable. It was deeply saddening.

I enjoyed seeing the cows, the working farm side and the ice cream is very nice. The homemade milk products are clearly very good, but very cheap meat sold in the cafe (Richmond sausages). I just think there's work to be done on managing the public side of the farm, balancing your financial needs with animal care, and you should remove the exotics and birds to appropriate specialist conservation animal organisations. I think in parts the animal care was unethical, and that outweighs any positives for me.‬

‪We visit the farm quite a few times a year and every time we love it. This particular time we went it was a hot sunny day so was really busy, but with the online booking slots, even when its busy - it doesn't seem overcrowded and still enjoyable.

The animals all look well looked after and are very interactive with people, especially when you are feeding them! The kids love to feed the animals, you can buy the animal food when you arrive.

Entrance price very reasonable, especially for the size of the farm and they have just built a new big play area (outside) with lots of slides etc.

In the petting corner, you can bottle fed lambs, you can hold the little chicks and rabbits, they also bring round the baby alpacas and large owls that you can also stroke and feel. This usually gets busy when we've been at the weekends, but they tend to do one or two every hour so you've got chance to take part.

There are lots and lots of cows with the farm being a dairy farm also, the milking demonstrations are a must, very insightful, especially for children!

There are many animals on the farm, cows, goats, sheep, deer, horses, donkeys, alpacas, pigs, chickens, pets corner animals, meerkats, the list goes on.

The staff we have spoken too have always been very friendly, and where always happy to help.

We usually bring a picnic, but they have a little cafe area, and ice cream / drinks places too. The cafe area isn't big so doesn't fit many people in, but there are loads of other places to eat your food, and lots of picnic benches if the sun is shining.

Donkey rides too. Also the tractor ride (£1.50 each) is worth a ride too, takes you too the top of the farm to feed some horses / donkeys some bread. The tractor ride up and down the tracks is a bumpy yet enjoyable one.

Overall a really good place for a day out, we have been visiting here for years, and will no doubt continue to do so - as it is great for any ages really!!‬

‪enjoyed the day as it was cheap and interacted with a lot of animals. their cute dogs didn't want to know us , so that was a bit sad but you know, can't blame the actual farm for that . We fed most of the animals and apart from one random violent goat that assaulted me in broad daylight with his weird horns (for stroking his smaller goat friend / kid ). You can buy 50p bags of feed and feed the animals and it's a mix of fun , cute , and terrifying. A black goat (We called frank) was the most pushy and I think he may have some kind of eating disorder as he wolfed down handful after handful. I'll miss you frank. always . ok never .
the staff were friendly, was a nice vibe there , and their ice cream was just stunning . the milkshake was meh but my god , that ice cream. Frank would have liked that . sorry frank. sorry not sorry

is some exotic stuff too although you can't really interact with them besides saying random things at uninterested meerkats . the cafe was decent (but not as good as the ice cream, or frank)

all in all if you like cute friendly animals slobbering on your palm and shouting at you for not feeding them treats (sounds like "uuwuughheeeghhhh" ) ,and the occassional risk of being assaulted by a goat with a bad attitude , and some amazing ice cream then go for it .

I love you frank‬

‪I visited the farm at Easter with our young daughter. We did all the activates including feeding the animals and the tractor ride, which she really enjoyed. The prices for the entrance and food are reasonable, also the staff where really friendly.

The animals all seem to be looked after which is great.‬

‪Lovely farm experience. The Easter Egg hunt was so fun and really well organised. They must work so hard to hide everything throughout the day's sessions! The Pets Corner experience was amazing: bottle feeding lambs, holding the chicks and rabbits, stroking the animals as they passed. The young hosts of the session were brilliant too and it was very informative.
Animals seem content, calm and very well looked after. We loved the meerkats!
Food in the cafe was OK and good value but we'd probably bring a picnic next time. Again, the staff were friendly and helpful.
Great play areas.
Ice cream and milkshakes at the icecreamery were a lovely treat and tasted great. Would definitely recommend *****‬

‪I booked for my daughter April’s 5th birthday party,
They took the cake and party bags off us as we went in and then waited for all her little friends to arrive, 20 children in total.
Amy then collected us and took April and her friends to pet some animals. We were really surprised by how many animals they brought out, lambs, a donkey, emu, an owl, rabbits, chicks, goats it was amazing. Next was the tractor ride up the hill to see the donkeys, after that My daughter got to stand in the meerkat enclosure and feed them. We then went on to the donkey ride before we had a fantastic lunch that was ready waiting for lots of hungry children.
We even stayed afterwards to watch the cows being milked and have an ice cream.
Thank you Smithills for making it a birthday to remember and a special thank you to Any for giving us the guided tour and making April feel like a princess for the day.
Money well spent
We will be back soon‬

‪The farm it’s self was a nice little farm but I feel everything could have been organised better, The que to get in even when purchased online was horrendous, spent more time queung to get in than actually on the farm, the cafe is very small and compact so when busy you can’t move much and the calf feeding was just a mess, it was so busy you could hardly move, there was just no organisation at all. The animal corner was great it was nice to feed and stroke the different animals and my little girl loved that and the tractor ride was good, they have donkey rides Wich is great for kids but again a long time queuing. The play area was good for older kids but my little girl is 3 so we didn’t get any use out of it. The staff are lovely and friendly but overall after a 45 minute drive i felt disappointed.‬
