‪I walk here daily with my dog. It’s a nice little area, not to large.
You do find young teenagers hanging around but I have never had any trouble with any of them.
You do sometimes get people walking there dogs off lead, which I’m not happy about.
The volunteers are friendly and try their hardest to keep the area looked after.‬

‪The site is about 3 acres in size and is criss-crossed with paths and trails, mostly unmade. There are no toilets or cafe facilities. I found 3 entrances in Cornwall Road and 1 in Marsh Street, there are probably more that I did not find. The wood is looked after by volunteers who ensure all is safe for visitors, children from the local school visit on a regular basis. The area was part of Joyce Green Hospital Cemetery, the last burials were in the early 1950s. There are very few signs of the woods former role except for one grave, of a former nurse from the Hospital ( who is referred to affectionately as Ethel by the volunteers) and rows of Yew trees which the volunteers are encouraging to revive themselves. Not a huge site but well worth an hour or so exploring. Very good.‬

‪it is great to have a lovely, well kept open space. A bit difficult for disabled people but that is going to be reviewed soon.‬

‪Was greeted at the entrance by a threatening gang of youths who welcomed us to this smelly, dirty piece of wasteland. There was clear evidence of seedy night activity everywhere. Felt unsafe and worried what we was going to tread in every step of the way. Yuk‬

‪In case anyone is interested this woodland was formally the Joyce Green cemetery and was attached to the Joyce Green Hospital which stood on the land now occupied by the surrounding Temple Hill estate.

Many burials took place in its grounds up until 1951, with over 80% occurring in just one year in 1902. This was the year that saw London and surrounding areas devastated by a severe smallpox epidemic. Other than just one remaining gravestone, the only other signs that this area was a burial ground are the yew trees which are traditionally planted in churchyards and cemeteries.

The only memorial now visible is for Ethel Clara Chapman who was the daughter of Frederick G Chapman and Alice and was born in the vicinity of West Ham, East London in 1898. In the 1911 census she is living at 65 Coolfin Road in Victoria Docks, London with her mother Alice and two brothers Mark Warrick Chapman and James Chapman. According to her memorial she was a nurse at the Poplar Institution, which was formally known as the Poplar Workhouse. Ethel died at the age of 22 on the 21 November 1922.

Oh and my Great Grand Uncle Joseph Ellement Read was buried in the paupers section here in 1902.‬

‪This is a simple woodland area maintained by volunteers from the Temple Hill Trust. Nice paths to run around and space for a picnic. There are lots of flowers, birds and in particular spiders!!!
I'd advise visitors to have a look at the website for directions as it can be confusing.‬
