The Guild Wheel is a superb concept. Sadly, for walkers it can be unnecessarily dangerous and miserable. This is due to a minority of "time trialing" speeding cyclists and large, off lead, dogs. The regular signs are clear and sensible, giving obvious instructions on how to behave for the benefit of everyone. Disregarded by these selfish users, this facility becomes, at best, irritating and at worst downright dangerous. Be careful on here.

This is a 21 mile circuit of Preston, mostly on sealed off- road paths. I found numerous interesting side trails to explore, so ended up doing nearly 30 miles in total. Luckily I rented an e-bike from the shop outside the main railway station, close to where the Guild Wheel begins. They gave me a useful map. Most of it is well signposted, but there were a couple of places where it was a bit confusing. Lots of variety and great scenery.

Lockdown idea was to go and walk the guild wheel to pass the day! To be honest it has made me realise of how many nice little walking routes there are dotted around the area of Preston. BUT my my, it will kill your feet! Next time I will definitely bike it and turn it into a pub crawl!

Great little walk around the canal and golf course.
All sign posted and a nice loop that's not too taxing.

Great route around Preston if I want an easy spin on the bike. Great to walk too, we regularly walk sections of it. Well signposted, I would recommend cycling it clockwise to avoid pushing up the steep hill in Brockholes wood.
I can’t understand another reviewer stating it is closed to cyclists when it rains, when it’s windy and in winter. I’m unsure where he read that, but it is never closed, ever. It is a circular walking and cycling route, mainly on shared paths, how could the council close it every time it rains?
I’ve done it at varying times of the year, mostly in winter, in snow etc. It is always open.

Great bicycle ride today with or 7 yrs old son. Completed the 36 kilometres of the Guild Wheel. Highly recommend. The route is not hard with only a few small hill climbs and only a small amount of riding along the roads. Mostly flat and smooth ride. Recommend starting off clockwise as there are some very steep hills we went down and would hate to go up these if you went the other way round. We started off at Mariners Way car park near McDonalds and headed for Audi car dealership, from there it is sign posted. Happy riding!

Really enjoyed seeing more of Preston and what a surprise! Brockholes, Broughton, Avenham Park my favourites. Parked at the car park on Mariners Way which is free (opposite McDonald’s) plus has a mobile catering van on site which seems popular. We struggled to find a GW sign at the beginning so headed off for Preston Audi and picked up signs in a few minutes. After that the signposting was excellent the whole way. Tiny bit on road with majority cycle pathways / off road. Nice riding alongside the Canal & River. It is a good recommendation to cycle clockwise otherwise you will have to climb up a short bit of uneven road near Brockholes. All in all a great 21 miles.

Great place to visit but it's an outrage that the guild wheel is closed to cyclists when it rains, when it's too windy and during the winter months. The council need to address this ASAP! The only people able to use this track at the said times are: Joggers, walkers and dog walkers. Thus causing a huge surge in Cyclists using the route in the warmer/dry/summer days and months! If they were allowed to use it all year round like the, joggers/walkers and dog walkers, surely would even out the traffic. Sort it out LCC!!!

The council never asked locals if they could use path near river wall as a cycle track. Worst idea ever. You cant have a quiet walk as always looking over shoulder for bikes. Its worse on nice days as loads of them.

Sorry only just seen this. It might be difficult in some areas, there are a number of kissing gates along the route.
Which is the best/easiest/quickest way to get on it from Preston station? It's not entirely clear from looking at the map.

From Preston station you need to go to Winkley Square from the back of the local Fishergate Centre and head up to Avenham Park. Once there, head down towards the river and you’re on the Guild Wheel 😃

We live in Wigan. Where is best to park to start the wheel. Also how far is it all the way round? Thanks

Best parking from your direction would probably be Brokeholes centre next to the Tickled Trout junction off the M6. You may have to pay for parking.
It’s 22 miles
Enjoy

We are based part way around the wheel at Broughton St John's Church. We see many people walking / cycling around on a Sunday. We are wondering about staying open after morning services to offer hot and cold drinks and access to the loo.
People tell me there are few places on this stretch to stop. If you've done / planning on doing the wheel would you welcome a respite in Broughton before you turn into D'Urton Lane?
Is there anything else that you'd find useful?

It’s a great idea! As the previous person said - might take a bit of time for people to get to know - but with a board outside advertising - it would be a great spot to stop! From memory - the next stops either direction are UCLAN sports arena and Starbucks, Bluebell way! Good Luck!

You could walk to the right hand side of London Road Bridge (heading into Preston), you would just have to walk half an hour then turn around. Alternatively you could turn left at London Road Bridge and head towards Avenham Park, unfortunately as it's a loop you would again need to turn back on yourself.

Hi, by doing the ride clockwise do we have to go up or down that steep hill in Brockleholes? Last time i did it - many years ago -we went down the hill but did get off our bikes to do it. i'd rather not push the bikes up it.

I don't remember a steep hill at Brockholes to be honest, there is one on the way. Assuming it's the one I think you would be going up it and yes you would need to dismount. There are signs saying you should anyway so it will be clear enough. It can get slippy if it's been raining so take care there. Enjoy.

Is there any info available regarding access points to the wheel. We are looking at riding this for charity with people we support with MH issues and there may be various fitness levels so we are trying to arrange a full ride and a part ride with support providing drinke etc along the way. Can you advise please.

There are numerous access points to the guild wheel as it generally runs along dedicated paths and bridleways with some road sections. There are several pubs/cafes etc along the route which would all provide good starting points. Uclan Sports arena, Ancient Oak pub, ASDA, Brockholes, Avenham Park, Continental Pub, Preston Docklands too name a few.
