This is a large, imposing church situated on the Bolton Road in Pendlebury, built of brick and consecrated in the 1870’s. At that time, the area was the church of choice to a large community of miners and indeed, there is a very moving memorial in the grounds just outside the building in respect of the losses from the Clifton Hall Colliery disaster. There are strong links with the artist L.S.Lowry who lived nearby and used the church as a subject for some of his work. We visited at a well attended event in the Manchester Festival which was staged within the building. It was difficult, on the day, to appreciate the grandeur of the internal architecture, but the scale and height of the building could not fail to impress. We will return to take a closer look.

Learning about such a great architect, and the generosity of one man is inspirational. The grand scale really hits once inside the church and you can see the high roof, the amazing opulence of the altar and the craftsmanship of the wood. It's great that such a grand building is tucked away like this. Makes it feel like hidden treasure.

My title is what St Augustines Church is known as. where Grosvenor Square fits in I am not sure. This most beautiful church is situated on Bolton Road in Pendlebury, my birthplace, so I have many fond remembrances of, GUSSIES, also my first school. Inside the church is flag floored, and the knave has few if any pews. A vast space where visitors can wonder at will and admire the panneling around the church. Look up and see the magnificently ornate vaulted ceiling. Separating the Knave from the Chancel is a wonderful fretted screen in th form of a bridge from one side of the church to the other enabling the organist to reach the instrument for services. Behind the separated Altar is a wonderful rearados containing a variety of biblical scenes in glorious colour. If you haven't make it one of your bucket list, you will not be disappointed.
