Ubicado en el centro de la Place des Quinconces, fue construido a fines del siglo XIX en memoria de los girondinos decapitados en 1792. La impresionante columna, visible desde varios puntos de la ciudad y de unos 50 metros de altura, está rematada por una figura que representa a la Libertad rompiendo sus cadenas y que está rodeada por dos impresionantes fuentes, el lado sur rinde homenaje al “Triunfo de la República” y el lado norte al "Triunfo de la Concordia". Las esculturas de bronce son realmente impresionantes y hay que mirar detalladamente cada una de ellas. Aprovechamos el calor para descansar un rato en las escaleras de acceso a la parte superior del monumento. Es una pena que la plaza en la que está no de sensación de cuidado. Creo que el monumento ganaría con césped a su alrededor.

This column in the heart of Bordeaux, is very impressive, with an incredible amount of detail with regard to statues & fountains.

This is a large, and very elaborate, monument dedicated to the Girondists. It is relatively easy to get to as there is a tram stop very close by. It is worth a visit.

Very central in Bordeaux and one can see the tall column from many different areas in the city center and from the different transport lines. The sculptures around the column are amazing and nice to see from the front and from behind after ascending the few steps. The square in front is rather dull and could be utilized in more interesting ways.

In the heart of Old Town Bordeaux, this monument is imposing with amazing fountains. Worth a good look around when you're in the area seeing other sights. We couldn't help but linger a little.

Après bien des péripéties, ce monument-fontaine (résultat de la fusion de 2 projets différents) sera érigé au début du 20e siècle tout en haut de l'Esplanade des Quinconces.
Colonne en bronze de 54m surmontée d'une statue représentant "la liberté brisant ses chaines", fontaines monumentales, plaques commémoratives en l'honneur des principaux girondins exécutés lors de la Révolution... ce monument, récemment restauré et nettoyé, est un incontournable sur les bords de la Garonne.

Dieser monumentale Brunnen steht auf dem Place des Quinconces und ist eines der Wahrzeichen von Bordeaux und eines der Hightlights jeder Stadtbesichtigung.

The pretentious monument to the Girondins is the dominant feature of the Quinconces Esplanade (Chess Esplanade). The huge esplanade itself was broken during the Restoration in 1820 on the site of the former castle. But the statue appeared only in 1902. At the top of the 50-meter column is the Statue of Liberty breaking the chains. The authors of this monument were Victor Rich and Alphonse Duilatre. The group sculptures were created by Felix Sharpantie and Gustav Debri, the author of sea horses masterpiece. All the sculptures below have an allegorical meaning. For example, a bare-breasted woman symbolizes the Republic. Almost like Delacroix, but there Freedom bared her chest. Since the monument is not an architectural masterpiece, the assessment of this monument is highly dependent on the political position. The Girondins, natives of Bordeaux, were good speakers, but poor organizers, so they lost in the political struggle with the Jacobins. Trying to save Louis XVI from execution, they lost the support of the masses. Not all of them ended up on the guillotine like Louis Capet (by Saint-Just's definition). Someone poisoned himself as the most famous Girondin, philosopher and mathematician Condorcet, someone fled and after the fall of the Jacobin dictatorship again became a member of the Convention. In general, the monument corresponds to the "heroes", is allegorical and eclectic.
