Built early 1700s, but on various occasions the bridge was severely damaged mainly because of war conflicts. The last time it happened during WOII, but already in 1948 they managed to successfully repair it. From the other side of the Loire river you have an excellent overview of the city of Blois. Well worth the walk.

Having rewinded about 35 kilometers along the largest river in France - the Loire - rolling its waters towards Biscay, we reached Blois from Amboise. And the first object that fell into the lens of my trusty camera was another Loire (Loire?) bridge - the Jacques-Gabriel Bridge (Pont Jacques-Gabriel)!!! So my “piggy bank” of Loire bridges has been replenished with another interesting example of bridge structures!!!
This bridge connects the two banks of the river almost in the very center of the city: on the northern side it starts from the Place de la Résistance and, throwing its 11-arch “body” 283 meters long across the river flow, ends at the Place Colonel Henri Rolle. Tanguys (Place du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy).
Before the appearance of this structure, the banks of the Loire were connected by the Saint Louis Bridge (Pont Saint-Louis). The latter was built back in the 11th century and coped with its functions for many years. However, everything has a limit to its capabilities and strength, as they say: on the night of February 6-7, 1716, this medieval bridge collapsed under the weight of ice blocks and the pressure of a stormy river flow. Since the collapsed structure could not be restored, by the summer of that year Duke Philippe of Orleans decided to build a new bridge.
The author of his project was Jacques Gabriel, the official architect and trusted advisor of King Louis XVI himself, a painter and one of the most outstanding designers of the Palace of Versailles!!! By the way, for the construction of the bridge in Blois, which began in 1717, a battalion of soldiers from the regiment stationed in Piedmont (as many as 600 people!!!) was brought in. Among others, this circumstance made it possible to build the bridge by May 1724.
Quite expectedly, the structure was named after the man who designed it - Jacques Gabriel (Pont Jacques-Gabriel). This bridge has one very interesting feature: it is the last surviving arch bridge on the Loire, which was built “on donkeys” (pont à dos-d’âne). Surprised? I'm incredibly surprised!!! Let me explain: the type of bridge structure “pont à dos-d’âne” (dos-d’en or do-d’an) is a horizontal plane formed by two inclined segments on each side of the “ridge”, which is their point of contact.
In simple terms, Pont Jacques-Gabriel is built in such a way that from both banks, as if “taking off”, the two halves of the bridge go towards each other, connecting in the central part at an obtuse angle, the apex of which is located significantly higher than the ends of the bridge. This method of building stone bridges was invented by the ancient Romans, who called the central bend “the backbone of a donkey.”
The most famous bridges of this type, besides the Blois one, are the Royal Bridge in Paris, the Roman Vaison-la-Romaine and the Novou Bridge in Corsica. Thanks to its “donkey spine” design and well-installed “bull” (supports), the bridge was able to overcome ALL the floods that have occurred since its construction in 1724!!!
And right in the center of the Jacques Gabriel Bridge, on that very “donkey’s ridge”, there is a memorial obelisk 14.6 meters high - in honor of the birth of this interesting structure. At the base of the obelisk there is a marble slab with an inscription in Latin telling about the progress of its construction. Quite unusual, isn't it? The object is very interesting in historical and architectural terms. I definitely recommend!!!

Puntige boogbrug met een lengte van circa 280 meter. Met de bouw van de brug werd gestart in het jaar 1717 ; voltooing in het jaar 1724. Tijdend de tweede wereldoorlog twee maal verwoest.

Precioso, y principal puente de Blois. Mucha historia está sobre sus piedras. Lo destruyeron los franceses al principio de la segunda guerra mundial para que no pasasen los alemanes, y los alemanes al final de la misma guerra batiéndose en retirada.

Je ne l'ai vu qu'à distance (faute de temps) bien qu'il soit très près du centre ville, par contre j'ai repéré qu'on peut longer le fleuve et que cela doit être une super ballade à pieds... Très beau aussi pour les photos !
