This place is a previous water tower and it houses now a headquarter for a wine society named Commanderie du Clos-Montmartre. It belongs to the City of Paris, which allows this society to use the place for events so it can take care of it. So is the deal. In fact, we will see that nothing is done to preserve the building and that the society is only making money with it and uses it for its own leisure and pleasure, which includes many trips across the countryside to visit other wine societies.
Most of the time, this small curious 19th-century octogonal building is closed but sometimes the space inside is rented by the society for artists exhibitions, especially during the spring and summer season. Then it is opened to the public. Hence, the visitor walks go through the fence, enter inside and stroll around the landmark to see a fountain and a small garden on the backside and a tiny vineyard on the side. A grape harvest festival is organized every year by the society in October, making the building as a starting point of the celebration heading toward a bigger famous vineyard some blocks away.
There are two major issues with the site:
- first, it is highly deteriorated. Humidity (it was previously a reservoir, I said) is terrible inside and is damaging the building. Some parts of the cornice upon the door are falling down. The carvings decorating the fountain have become almost invisible.
- Second issue is that it is located on the wrong side of the street. I mean that it is on the opposite side of the popular itinerary followed by the throngs of tourists going to the Place du Tertre. So even with a large advert on the walls, only kind of lost passers-by are going to see your exhibition, artist. And they will be more interested in entering the place by curiosity rather than by your exhibition. And because they don't feel they visit a commercial place, they are not motivated in purchasing artworks. Sometimes they even don't look at the works but they will ask you cultural information about the site, making you becoming a tour guide. So you will sell nothing and loose your money by renting the place some hundreds of euros. In addition, the society is still using the place during the exhibition according to its own calendar of events, which means that it occurs many times that groups of people would come only for wine testing or whatever without giving a look to your works, a little bit like if the owner of an hotel would invite people to visit your room that you would have paid for good money and that he would sell entrance tickets for that.
In a word, this place is a major trap for exhibitors who are desesperately seeking a venue to show their works, it is in a very bad shape and it doesn't demonstrate a particular cultural interest for the visitor. Just pass your way

We have passed this building o numerous occasions and thought perhaps it was a mausoleum but only recently found out that it is a building belonging to a wine society. It is quite an interesting building from the outside.
