We recently visited each of the five WWII D-Day landing beaches, including Sword Beach, over two days. These beaches all have a sense of the sacred about them and it was a very moving experience.
However Sword Beach has fewer memorials or tangible reminders of D-Day than other beaches like Utah or Omaha. There are no D-Day relics or historical remnants along the beachfront. There’s not even much information or signage. It is difficult to imagine that 80 years ago, thousands of young men stormed the beach under heavy enemy fire, many of them falling and dying here.
We were struck by a strange disconnect between the historical events of D-Day and what you see here today.
Today, Sword is a popular small tourist resort and a busy beach with people sun-baking and families swimming and playing. We were there on a sunny afternoon and people strolled along the promenade, past the cafes, bars and houses that line the beach.
Sword is a long, long beach and we found it difficult to know which section to head to. Somewhat randomly, we stopped at Lion-Sur Mer where we found free parking by the beach. We strolled along the promenade as far as Hermanville-sur-Mer, where there are a few modest memorials clustered in a small square. On the return walk, we stopped at a casual beachside bar and had a drink in the late afternoon. There are plenty of places to choose from. We sat in the sun, overlooking the beach and reflecting on D-Day and what it meant.
TIPS:
i) Sword Beach is easily combined with a visit to the Merville Battery Museum, Pegasus Bridge and the Pegasus Memorial Museum.
ii) Overall, visiting Sword Beach was a very different experience to visiting Utah Omaha, or Gold beaches, where the memory of D-Day is front and centre. If you only have time to visit one or two, then I’d recommend visiting one of these instead.

Large beach with miles of sand and beautiful memorials. Nice walk all the way along with easy access due to boardwalk. Lots of bits to see along the way and pay respects. far end seemed to be a lot of (undressed) sunbathers and getting naked in car parks which may not be suitable for some families with children so be warned - less down the busier area near the memorials

A long sandy beach that shows why it was chosen as one of the landing beaches during D-Day. There are some memorials along the promenade to allow for remembrance. The information boards are few and only in French.

We were on Sword beach as part of a group guided tour. I share the thoughts of many reviewers before us. Sword beach is of historic importance and was one of 5 beaches the allies landed on June 6th 1944.
There is really not much to see (the same with Juno beach), a gap in-between two houses , with single language boards on the walls and some flags.
Given the loss of French & British lives, the respective governments should have a fitting memorial for so many who lost their lives.

As part of Normandy trip, self arranged, we just started studies & visits from here, D-Day's east side beach, where coastal sector was named as "Sword". And as it was occupied mostly of United Kingdom's soldiers, of course, bagpipers was along. There is one memorial monument also for this. Today beach looks very nice, thus calm still before Summer season will begin. According to war history there is also famous battle

This was the first of the D Day beaches that we visited. Apart, however, from the profound sense of history that we felt at this place, there is not much there that speaks to the bravery and sacrifice reflected by this poignant place.

Het strand is gewoon, fijn zandstrand. De overige feiten moet je van te voren lezen en je moet je de gebeurtenissen inbeelden. Om het rijtje compleet te krijgen van de invasiestranden een beeoek waard.

Ik heb alle 5 D-Day stranden bezocht en vond deze plek de minst aansprekende. Het strand is voor strandgangers, en ik heb eigenlijk weinig monumenten en bunkers gezien. Als jouw tijd te kort is, dan kun je dit strand rustig overslaan. De andere stranden zijn voor de geschiedenis liefhebber interessanter.

Of all the beaches we visited I would have thought the government’s of France and UK would have invested a little money for the men who made the ultimate sacrifice for Freedom. To say it’s a scarce memorial is an understatement

Wie langs gaat om fortificaties/bunkers/memorials langs de kust van Sword Beach te bekijken, komt er wel relatief bekaaid vanaf.
Er zijn er wel een paar zoals bv Le Grand Bunker te Ouistreham en inland WN 17 Hillman. Maar ook veel liggen op privaat gebied of zijn reeds afgebroken.
Zich goed informeren is de boodschap...
