Why don't we go back to the audio guides?
Museums where you have to read everything are dead

‪Museum is sensational and very educational. The only problem is that the entrance is "hidden", among construction wood. They charge 4 euros for entry.‬

‪Museum located in the citadel, high above the city, which provides access to an exceptional view of the surrounding area.
The entrance price is very affordable (strangely given the prices in the city).
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and richness of what was presented to us in this museum.
Very rich, very well presented.
Lots of information through videos, models, paintings, drawings, etc.
1h45 visit, and we could have stayed longer.‬

‪After a short walk you reach the citadel, which towers over Saint-Tropez. From there we had a good view of Saint-Tropez, the sea and the opposite coast. The fortress grounds are easy to explore from the outside. Inside the fortress there is a museum about shipping and the history of Saint-Tropez. Unfortunately we only had a short stay in Saint-Tropez, so we were not able to see the entire exhibition. Nevertheless, a visit was worthwhile for us.‬

‪The most historic and charming region of Saint-Tropez. The Citadelle is beautiful, historic and with a Provençal charm that defines the Côte d'Azur. It's worth getting lost in the narrow streets and enjoying it.‬

‪The museum is just superb. For a price of around 4€ for one person, the visit remains full of fine details, we cannot believe that the price is so low compared to this masterpiece of Saint-Tropez. For a visit that never ends, we have free reign over a vast range of decorations, paintings, statues, and films that will not make you retrace your steps! Seduced by this bit of history.‬

‪It is certain that visiting the citadel of Saint-Tropez must be done in good weather in order to enjoy the places and the magnificent views they offer. Especially since there is no real parking nearby, but the walk is pleasant and allows you to pass through the streets of the city or more wooded paths, populated in particular by almond trees and mimosas.

Full-price entry costs four euros and it takes 1 hour 45 minutes to visit the entire citadel and the maritime history museum located in the keep. I found the places clean and well organized with a water point and toilets available. At the entrance, do not hesitate to take the map of the place which presents the history of the citadel and arrows the route.
The signs are written in French and English. But I found that these installations were of very poor quality, illegible, sometimes non-existent, there really needs to be a policy for repairing said panels.

After entering through the large gate of 1820 (the citadel has undergone repairs and modifications because, initially, it dates from the beginning of the 17th century) and having been able to admire the mechanism for lifting the bridge deck, we walk in the dry ditch populated with panels explaining the history of the citadel, before arriving at the old well which also serves as a picnic area and which offers a first superb view of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

The old chapel, transformed into barracks in 1817, houses temporary exhibitions. In this case, the Pelagos marine sanctuary was highlighted, dealing with marine mammals (monk seal, dolphin, etc.), their way of life and the threats weighing on them.

The cannon esplanade follows. Four weapons dating from the 17th century extend their green bronze facing the sea. Behind us is the large keep, which houses the maritime history museum. We enter through the octagonal courtyard. The museum itself is extremely well organized. Each object has its own sign, each room is decorated on the theme of the subject, films are shown in several rooms, often short, the explanations are fun and accessible to young people.
The museum opens with three panels explaining the legend of Saint-Tropez, the myth that the city represents, and its real history. I am not going to dwell on the 22 rooms which run from the ground floor to the top of the dungeon. But some are definitely worth the detour.
Starting with the evocation of a fisherman's cellar full of period tools and in which the interview of a former fisherman explaining his profession and its developments allows us to learn a lot. You can admire a moray eel trap, a lobster trap, a cauldron which allowed nets to be dyed using maritime pine bark... Archive images of tuna fishing in 1947 are broadcast on a small screen recessed on top of a barrel.
The piece dealing with cabotage with goods as a sub-theme is intelligently put together. On the ground is the reproduction, unless I am mistaken, of a grid (grid) which allows an excavation site to be mapped. However, objects taken from the wreck of the Sardinaux are presented.
The next room presents a fairly large model of a tartane and two ballasts loading sand (we learn that many buildings in Nice are built with sand from Saint-Tropez.

We are surprised to discover the room on the torpedo factory. An open model of an L4 torpedo with all its components is presented. A period film praising the military exercises at the Le Suffren building is broadcast.

Upstairs, the navy room is clearly one of the highlights. In an original way, the pontoon of a king's building was reconstructed on the wall, vertically, with all the weapons (cannons, balls, pistols, sabres). Opposite, it is the reproduction of a battleship frame which represents the Bouvet, sunk in 1915 in the Dardanelles Strait.

In the maritime trade room, you must stop in front of the magnificent 17th century chest, open with its complex system of locks. In the one dedicated to travel beyond Cape Horn, curiosities are not to be missed: the sperm whale tooth engraved by a sailor, the immense stuffed gull. On the ceiling, a film composed of images from 1929 and 1933 presents the sail torchers and their essential role during the crossing of the famous Cape. In the midst of all these ancient memories, a modern painting from 2010 entitled The Unleashed Sea, illustrates with a modern eye the hellish crossing of Cape Horn.

After crossing the room of liners - its advertising posters, its model of the liner Provence and its silhouettes representing a port - we climb to the top of the keep. The rooms are less interesting because they are very modern (motorboating, Virtual sailboat, etc.) but will appeal to lovers of maritime luxury. On the other hand, the different 360-degree viewpoints offer visitors images worthy of a summer vacation.

This visit is not just about my contribution. The citadel and its museum have much more to offer. I recommend this visit, which will also appeal to children. Especially if they can get close to the local flock of peacocks.‬
