La cathédrale de la Major ne peut pas être ratée. Elle est imposante et donne sur la mer. Elle est située entre le Mucem et le quartier du Panier.

Très jolie cathédrale marseille, à côté de la mer. Majestueuse depuis l'extérieur, de jolis décors intérieurs.

Die Hauptkirche von Marseilles, im neoromanisch- byzantinischem Stil liegt nahe des Quai de la Joliette. Sie ist innen reich mit Mosaiken, Marmor und Wandbildern verziert.

If you take any boat trip out of the harbor or end up at Fort St Jean, it is impossible to miss this imposing building. Without the advantage of being at the top of a high hill like the Basilica, it may be missed if you are not in the right area of town but once you are close it cannot be missed. Wonderfully designed on the outside with “stripes” of alternating colors of stone it sits between the main harbor for smaller boats and the south end of the commercial port. You can get an especially great view from a boat (say a ferry to one of the islands or from a catamaran on a day trip?). Inside is the same striped theme but with different colors of stone than on the outside. The alcoves and architectural design plus the stone colors and the gold trim and frescos just make this a very unique and bright church inside when compared to so many in other areas of the continent. Beautiful and an absolute must-stop.

This cathedral is impressive both from the outside and the inside. One can see the oriental influence in the decor, mosaics and atmosphere.
It definitely is worth a visit while you walk around the port.

De style romano-byzantin, elle a été construite entre 1852 et 1893 d'après les plans (141 m L x 16 m l x 25 m H) de Léon VAUDOYER (1803-1872). L'autel repose sur les symboles des 4 évangélistes dont les statues sont aux 4 coins du transept. La chapelle axiale est dédiée à Eugène de MAZENOD (1782-1861), fondateur des missionnaires oblats de Marie-Immaculée, évêque de Marseille en 1837 et sénateur en 1856.

We are going on a family vacation- royal caribbean cruise line - in July and we are stopping in Marseille. Were there many things to do within walking distance from the port? Other than this church, what are other sites to visit that are close to the port? Thanks

See map Marseille. Go to the cruise ship port (not the old port) and look at street view. You can walk to Cathédrale La Major and Panier area. You can continue to walk to Fort St Jean and Église Saint-Laurent church (foot bridge across highway from Fort St. Jean). There you can take bus 60 to Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. Which I would do first because the view of the city is stunning and the church is beautiful inside. Bus 60 winds around the old port and up the hill to the church and stops at the church. Then you take bus 60 from the church back to Fort St. Jean. Sit on the right side going up and the left side going down. You can do it!
