Unbedingt sehenswert ist dieses Gefängnis. Allerdings braucht man gute Nerven, die Dokumentation geht schon an die Nieren. Für mich ein Muss bei einem Potsdambesuch.

In een oud pand midden in de winkelstraat is deze oude gevangenis gevestigd. Deze is gebruikt tot 1989. Veel te lezen, maar erg indrukwekkend. Zeker een aanrader als je in Potsdam verblijft.

Diese Gefängnisanlage diente im Zweiten Weltkrieg und zu DDR Zeiten den Stasi Schergen der Zermürbung und Quälerei unschuldiger Insassen die sich dem falschen System der Gesellschaft widersetzten, Ihre politische Meinung nicht verschwiegen und oder sogenannte Volksverräter unterstützten und halfen. Hier wurde man heimlich fertig gemacht, gedemütigt und erniedrigt und oder zu den Russen verschleppt, hingerichtet, verbrannt und auf unbekannte russische Friedhöfe verbracht.
Die Toiletten Spülung wurde ausserhalb der Zelle angebracht, die sehr kleinen Fensterlosen Zellen ließen gar nichts zu, 1x pro Tag für ein paar Minuten durfte man in eine 2x2 Meter große Hofgangszelle.
Trauriges Mahnmal der Vergangenheit.
Wärter hatten nach Fall des Systems nicht mit Konsequenzen zu rechnen und wurden 1:1 in das neue System integriert.

Die ständige Ausstellung zur Geschichte Potsdams und die wechselnden Sonderausstellungen sowie interessante Vorträge ziehen uns immer wieder ins Potsdam Museum. Es gibt auch ein Café mit leckerem Angebot im Untergeschoss.

Besides their extraordinary permanent collection, this museum presents amazing temporary exhibitions. Earlier this year, there was one of the Third Reich and when we returned in November, there was an exhibition on the Red Army's occupation of Potsdam. The woman at the Kasse, is one of the nicest and most informative museum staff that we have ever encountered. She goes above and beyond in providing information about the museum and exhibitions. Of course, she only speaks German, just a heads up.

We were surprised by the size of this museum. The whole prison has been converted to a museum. The exhibition explains in detail the history of the building and stories of the prisoners. It's a very powerful museum and memorial site. Ask for a booklet in English from the ticket office. The booklet will give you lots of information and guide you through the exhibition.

Ce musée est un bon complément aux palais et château du parc de Potsdam et décrit l'évolution de la ville en elle-même, dans cet environnement royal.

Die Gedenkstätte in der Lindenstraße ist ein Ort, an dem man sich wirklich authentisch mit der deutschen geschichte auseinandersetzen kann. Zu unterschiedlichen Epochen wurde das Haus als Gerichtsgebäude, dann auch als Gefängnis, besonders für politische Gefangene benutzt. Besonders tragisch sind die Geschichten derer, die beim Wechsel von einer zur anderen Diktatur vom regen in die Traufe kamen, also von der einen Repression in die nächste gerieten. Die Eindrücke, die man hier gewinnt, sind wirklich besonders und erlauben deutliche Einblicke in die deutsche Geschichte besonders des 20. Jahrhunderts. Unbedingt empfehlenswert ist eine Führung!

I did not think I would be so interested in Potsdam!
This was an excellent museum with some genuinely interesting and engaging exhibits.
The museum was laid out chronologically and I particularly found the medieval aspects of the town to be of interest.
The only small (literally) problem was the tiny sizes of the information placards next to each exhibit. They were far too small and some almost on floor level. They could be better thought out.

Si bien el nuevo Museo Barberini se lleva toda la atención, no desatender a este otro, que está al lado y con excelentes propuestas. Buenas colecciones, buena presentación de las obras.

Hi, I visited without a reservation. They have a front desk with two people from the staff. I guess you can print your number and go there directly, it's a small and little crowded museum. Hope this helps.

How far is this from Berlin?

The prison is located in central historic Potsdam, which is very close to Berlin. I always had a car when going to Potsdam (20-30 min from centre to centre because of the city traffic), also convenient for a stop on the Bridge of Spies, but as a main attraction of Berlin area, I expect Potsdam to be very well connected to Berlin city centre by public transport services.
