They're one of those places where we all have to go at least once in our lives. You learn a lot and realize what we can be capable of as a society. You arrive and the sadness hits you all at once and you don't leave until you leave that place

It is clear that it is not part of the history the Germans are proud of.
There is very poor communication and very little to see. Everything is in German and only the headlines are translated into English. However, there is an app that helps a little with English mediation.
The Frøslev camp is significantly better communicated.

How to get there
15 minutes from Hamburg Central Station on the S2,
get off at the 8th stop, Bergedorf
There is a staircase leading directly to the bus stop from the station
Climb up to the top and you will reach the bus stop.
Take bus #227 or #127 (this is the starting point).
The bus runs once an hour, and it takes 30 minutes from the station to the camp
The bus does not end at the camp.
The bus stops on the camp grounds are
Mahnmal
Klinkerwerk
Ausstellung
in that order.
On the way there, get off at Ausstellnug, where the information center is located, get a map (available in Japanese), use the toilet here
Tour the grounds in order,
and then get on at Mahnmal, where the monument is
I recommend that you do this on the way back. There is also an exhibition center at Mahamal
and there is a toilet there, so you don't have to worry!
From the station, take the bus through residential areas,
and as you get closer to the camp, the houses disappear all at once
You can't help but think, oh, this is the whole camp area.
It's surrounded by lush greenery, and it's hard to imagine that something like that could have happened.
It's a feeling that I can't describe.
Neuengamme was originally built as a brick factory for Hamburg, and perhaps because it was originally for German prisoners,
there's nothing shocking about it. There are no barracks left.
It wasn't an extermination camp, so there were no gas chambers, and it left a different impression from the camps I've visited so far.
The thing that left the biggest impression on me here was
the remains of the brick factory.
There are trolleys and rails, so you can't help but feel the reality.
The site is large, so there's nothing blocking the view in the summer, so it might be difficult to walk around during the tour.
Bringing drinks with you is a must.
It's better to bring snacks or eat at the station.
There is a cafe, but
when I visited in November, it was barely functioning.
Toilets are located in the information center, the main exhibition, and the exhibition hall next to the Mahnmal bus stop.
If you're lucky, you can get there from Hamburg Central Station in an hour.
The ticket is HVV Tagaskarte (unlimited train and bus rides)
9 am Day Ticket (valid all day after 9 am)
The area is Hamburg AB (1-2 fare rings)
€7.10
It's easy to get to from Hamburg, so I definitely recommend you visit.

A harrowing experience but a fantastic look back at history. Easy enough to get to by public transport from Hamburg.
We only visited for 2 hours and only saw a fraction of the camp.
There is a cafe for tea and cakes with friendly staff if you need a break.

Started at the Remembrance block and walked through the rest of the site (approx. 1km long) and saw everything in a long day. Take food and drink with you we would suggest. The bus service is very good to and from the camp from Bergdorf. Due to the camp having had many roles since the end of the war it is mostly well preserved for hard structures. The timber buildings are long gone but their locations are denoted by gabions full of rubble with information boards (google translate is useful). Staff we talked to were great and took time to explain many things including the Cap Arcona sinking in May 1945 with a huge loss of life to evacuated prisoners.
The brickwork buildings are huge and the ordeal of the forced labourers unimaginable. Labour was also provided to other organisations and there were around 85 sub camps to facilitate this, including one next to our Hotel in Hammerbrooke and at Bullenhuser Damm.

It's about the experience, not something to photograph.
Many good descriptions and personal guidance in many languages.

You can feel the history of this place. We enjoyed it very much (as much as you can enjoy pure evil)

I really want to go to the Neuengamme concentration camp memorial , But how? We are on a cruise the port we arrive in on May 12, is Hafen City W. in Hamburg. How do l get a bus, or public transportation to visit Neuengamme and pay my respects.
Thank you Randy

I would suggest train and then bus as this would be cheaper than getting a taxi as you can get a ticket for both together. I'm unsure of which buses and trains you would need to get but if you go on Google maps and put in your starting place and then the concentration camp it will tell you all of the information you need to get there via public transport. This is what we did.

Hi, we are going to be in Hamburg on the Caribbean Princess cruise ship on May 5, 2016. I cannot find any tours to take us to the camp and I would be very interested in visiting the memorial. Do you know of any tour company in Hamburg that would offer this? I am a bit reluctant to take public transportation.. Thank you.

Sorry, but I cannot help. We were taken there by local friends.

How far is memorial from marriott hotel in downtown Hamburg and is it easily reachable by public transportation or reasonably priced taxi? Will be in Hamburg 2 nights, and would like to visit either on Sat. July 11 or Sunday afternoon July 12. Michael

Hello,
I don't know where your hotel is but transportation in Hamburg is fantastic and you will be able to reach the camp by train and then bus. I had never been to Hamburg before and figured it out very easily. Good luck!
