Kniepertor, located in north-west corner of old town, is one of two Stralsund's medieval city gates that has survived until today, and to be honest, when comes down to architectonic features, it's the humbler representative one of those two. Depends on the sources, it was mentioned for the first time either 1293 or 1304. It was built of characteristic, red brick on rectangular plan with additional external gate, but structure that we can see today consist only windowless basement and two floors topped with hipped roof. The actual gate is the bricked pointed arch with passage width of about two meters. In 15th century there were some modifications made to its exterior. During demolition of old, city fortifications in 19th century, city council decided to keep the gate, however not in her original form. External gate of Kniepertor were demolished, along with gatekeeper house, huge stretches of city walls and few other neighbouring houses. I have to say that area sandwiched in between Kniepertor and Johanniskloster is much more interesting. One can take a look at the gate while being around, but it's not a must. Try to find Kutertor instead.

En av alla portar som finns i Stralsund. Denna är en ganska ordinär port som det ändock är värt att kolla in en stund.
