WHAT A MUSEUM!!! The history of the city of Aachen is explained from all sorts of perspectives. What is the best part of this museum that almost every panel can be enhanced by clicking a button, or moving a slider with a magnifying glass.
If you have not enough time, you might skip that, but you will miss out severely! Great!

Modern museum with a smartphone app in 4 languages. Also many touch screens, models and copies of paintings and documents. I spent two hours in the museum.

Mooi nieuw complex met in de kelder een chronologie van Aken. Didactisch maar weinig nieuws. Boeiende fotoreeksen over Aken onder en na de nazis.

Non si può visitare Aachen e non visitare il Museo di storia della città, molto ben curato e ricco di reperti archeologici e non solo per capire nel dettaglio la storia della città dalla sua fondazione fino ad oggi. Interessante anche per i bambini che possono utilizzare postazioni interattive e toccare con mano quello che si è studiato in storia antica a scuola negli anni.

Luseum dat een uitgebreid totaalbeeld geeft van de geschiednis van de stad van de Romeinse tijd tot nu. Op een groot immens bord bovenaan wordt elke periode beschreven en daaronder vindt men op basis van voorwerpen, videoschermen en keuzeobjecten alle info en dit in DU-EN-NL-FR.

Le lieu est peut-être intéressant pour les visiteurs qui parlent allemand mais quel erreur de la part de la ville de ne pas avoir organisé ce centre retraçant la vie et l’héritage de Charlemagne dans les 3 langues de l’Europe : Anglais, français et allemand. À part quelques bornes multilingues toutes les explications sont uniquement en allemand et il n’y avait pas de guide audio disponible en français. Pour la présentation d’un personnage historique aussi européen que Charlemagne, quelle énorme erreur !
Sinon, quelques pièces authentiques valent la visite mais beaucoup de copies et un mélange d’ informations allant dans tous les sens … ce centre mériterait d’être recentré sur ses objectifs.

This interesting museum provides a great timeline of the Aachen area and its inhabitants and rulers—educational and highly recommended. Tickets can be purchased at the center’s front desk.

This is a fairly big museum for somewhat niche area of history. It is cheap to enter and you can store your luggage/bags in a locker. Museum itself is intersting and interactive for kids.

The museum tries to weave a story together of Charlemagne and the city of Aachen. It is playful and should appeal to different age groups and levels of interest.
Many artefacts are actually reproductions, but that doesn't detract from the story that is being told.

Is the thermal spa used by Charlemagne himself still in use and what is it called?

i don't believe it is still there. The Elisenbrunnen is the thermal spring where you can see and taste the mineral waters which the area is famous for. Even if Charlemagne didn't use it you should visit the carolus thermen spa (include the saunas) for a relaxing afternoon)
