Definitely worth visiting this high quality collection that's a who's who of 20th century art. The permanent collection takes about 1-1,5 hours to visit and see works by Paul Klee, Picasso, Braques, Mondriaan, Chagall, Kandinski, Dali, Matisse, Warhol, Pollock and also some really interesting textile art. The other half of the museum has temporary exhibitions.

Whatever issues there were with closure of the collection at the K20 have been resolved. We spent about 2 hours going through the permanent exhibition and were very, very impressed start to finish. In addition the descriptions of the pieces were rich and helpful, and the audio guide dialogues were enjoyable if a bit hokey. The couple of artist interviews on there were terrific. Overall a really outstanding collection of art from the first half of the twentieth century with a few interesting newer works scattered in. Highly recommend.

BEWARE!! Permanent collection is closed. 16 euros to see ONLY the Kandinsky and Klint exhibition ! Rip off! Can be done in well under one hour! Actually give it a miss!
No warning at time of buying ticket, ticket seller claimed he told me it was closed but this was untrue. Pointed to a sign that one can barely see.
This is extremely disappointing behaviour. I have come across this overcharging ripoff behaviour in some Mediteranean countries but never expected it in Germany. What a shame that this country has fallen to the low standards of its neighbours. Maybe its a funding problem. Shameful!

Ordered tickets online. Tickets not received. Bought new tickets at the counter with the promise that they would refund the credit card payment. Not so nice. So don't order online.

I rarely, if ever, give a one star review as I do try and see the good in things but my goodness this place tested me. It was c.€12 each to enter and I genuinely couldnt tell you what it was all about. The highlight was the impressive architecture of the building and the unique installation under the dome where you can climb out onto the nets and enjoy the inflatable orbs!!!

I love the architecture in Dusseldorf Old Town ( Altstadt ) ,so many beautiful buildings beautifully restored post war but there are some new buildings that just add to the joy of walking around the Old Town, one such building is Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfalen.
An art museum that very popular and well worth visiting,fascinating in fact and the building is super, such a highly photogenic building, if you're in the area its most definitely well worth checking out and easy to locate along Grabbeplatz.

“A Majestically Minimalistic Display of Moderne Kunst at K20”
Düsseldorf’s K20 Kunstausstellung has taken a daring leap into the realm of minimalism, presenting us with vast expanses of… space. In a world saturated with visual stimuli, they’ve courageously decided that less is, in fact, more. And by ‘more’, I mean more high ceilings and less actual art. These large voids perfectly compliment the few pieces of Moderne Kunst sprinkled throughout the museum. Their nod to Joseph Beuys is particularly subtle, with his renowned works masterfully camouflaged amidst the gallery’s expansive nothingness. It’s almost like a game of “Where’s Beuys?” The towering ceilings not only accommodate the enormous weight of artistic reputation but also the echoing sound of visitors asking, “Is that all?” Kudos to K20 for reminding us that sometimes, the real art is in what isn’t there. An exhibition not to be missed if you’re keen on appreciating vast amounts of curated air!

A beautiful collection is exhibited here, together with the necessary information. If someone can appreciate art but doesn't know much about it, this is always very nice.

"Aus dem Osten kommt das Licht" ist eine römische Weisheit aus der Antike und beschreibt die Ausstellung "Etel Adnan. Poesie der Farben" sowohl kurz als auch treffend.
Betritt man im K20 den Ausstellungsraum im Erdgeschoss, so steht man vor einem großformatige Bild der Künstlerin aus 96 Kacheln im Format 12x8 welches definitiv eine perfekte Einstimmung auf die Ausstellung ist.
Die Farben in den Werken Adnans sind definitiv freundlich und heiter und übertragen diese Heiterkeit auf den Betrachter. Vor daher ist diese Ausstellung etwas für trübe Regentage und das Wetter während des Ausstellungsbesuchs am 22. April 2023 im Zuge der "Nacht der Museen" genau richtig.
Es finden sich in der Ausstellung eher kleinformatige Werke Öl auf Leinwand, bei denen man beobachten kann, daß um so älter die Künstlerin während der Schaffung war, um so leichter und heiterer das Werk in Bezug auf Farbgebung und Wahl der Motive ist. Dominierten in den 1960ern Quadrate und Rechtecke mit harten Kontrasten in Farbe, so sind die Werke aus dem letzten Lebensjahrzehnt eher von Anlehnung an natürliche Motive geprägt, die in Pastellfarben ausgeführt wurden - sei es ein Strich als Trennung zwischen Himmel und Erde, die Sonne als Kreis oder ein Berg in Kalifornien.
Großformatig sind Werke aus Textil, die entweder mit kräftigen Farben bemalt oder direkt farbig gewebt wurden. Da Adnan neben der Malerei vordringlich als Schriftstellerin tätig war, kommt dieser Aspekt in der Ausstellung nur nachrangig zur Geltung, was aber keinen Abbruch tut, da es ja um das malerische Schaffen der Künstlerin geht.
Die Leporellos Adnans vereinen beides - Malerei und Schriftstellerei. Wermutstropfen bei manchen ist die fehlende Übersetzung aus dem Arabischen - hier wäre eine komplette Übersetzung der Texte in Französisch - der zweiten Muttersprache der Künstlerin, die viele Jahre in Paris gelebt hat - sowie Deutsch und Englisch angebracht - zumal die Begleittexte zu den Werken in Deutsch und Englisch erfolgte.
Ein sehenswerter Stimmungsaufheller!

K20 is situated near the Rhine and is a short walk away from Heinrich-Heine-Allee U-Bahn station on line U75.
The collection in K20 is primarily from the 20th Century and is very good.
A good selection of work by Paul Klee, as well as by Kandinsky, Kirchner, Beckmann, Picasso and Matisse.
There was also some interesting surrealist offerings from Dali, Magritte, Miro and Ernst.
I spent an enjoyable ninety minutes here browsing the exhibits.
I paid €18 for a ticket to view both K20 and K21. K21 is around a mile south of K20 and there is no longer a bus to transport you there so I made my way on foot.
K21 is in Standehauspark and contains mainly 21st century art and installations.
I found this not so interesting although I did like the Amazon Worker Cage by Paul Denny and some photography by Wolfgang Tillmans.
Probably not worth the long walk from K20 but overall a enjoyable morning viewing the decent art in the first gallery.

Why did this museum NOT clearly indicate to patrons buying tickets that the permanent collection is closed? Charged 16 euros to see a small exhibition without warning. Even asked at time of buying whether price covered everything in museum K20 and he said yes! Shocking ripoff!!! Shameful!

Note that there are two buildings. K20 Grabbeplatz is at the Heinrich-Heine Allee stop, K21 Ständehaus is at the Graf-Adolf-Platz stop. There's a free shuttle bus to go from one to the other, though it is a pleasant walk if the weather is good.
