The castle itself is under rebuilding, so you can't walk around inside the garden. The porcelain exhibition is really nice and much bigger than I expected. Usually I don’t like such exhibitions, but I really liked this one and there were some very nice characters. You have to go up to the café in the top to buy the ticket, which cost either 5 or 6 euros. You may not have bags or overclothes in there, but is free storage. Remember, however, to have a 1 or 2 euro coin with to the closet, you get it back after end of use.

Even though I’m not a big fan of porcelain, it was not boring and an absolute aesthetic pleasure. Some of the pieces left me stand and marvel at them for a while, very impressive. The outside area is also gorgeous and good for pictures.

I had a lovely afternoon, although in hindsight I would have gone in the morning to have more time. The collection is valuable and presented in elegant and bright rooms. Be careful not to miss the room on the second floor where there are iPads with videos that explain the manufacturing processes and how the porcelain is obtained. Unmissable for art and porcelain lovers. It could be interesting to create a small shop at the end of the route.

Here too, Augustus the Strong shows his great passion for collecting the beautiful things in the world. The Chinese porcelains from various eras (15th-18th centuries) and the Japanese Imari porcelains in brocade style and the "Ru bowl", the brush washing vessel from around 960-1127 AD, one of the rarest ceramics in the world (89 pieces) are particularly noteworthy. A snowball flower vase with a picture of King Louis XV of France from the Meissen production in 1741 is interesting.
Augustus the Strong had the large Chinese lidded vases, which were intended for keeping ornamental fish, converted into planters by having a hole drilled in the bottom (for his orange trees).
With a combination ticket for €14, €10.50 reduced, we were able to visit "The Picture Gallery" including the sculpture collection up to 1800, the porcelain collection and the Mathematical-Physical Salon. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Mondays.
Note: Since February 2021, the inner courtyard of the Zwinger has been renovated and the buildings cleaned of their patina (see my photo of the construction site plan). Some buildings are already "shining" in new splendor. (Costs €15 million) The renovation is scheduled to be completed in spring 2025.
The Neptune fountain and parts of the inner courtyard are accessible.
In the museum café "Solino" there was delicious wild berry cake and lactose-free cappuccino.

The Royal Porcelain Museum, together with the beautiful Gallery of the Ancient Masters and the original museum of physical and mathematical instruments, completes the museum exhibition housed in the various pavilions of the Zwinger which can be visited with a single cumulative ticket. Of the three museums mentioned above, this is the one that involved me the least, although it must be admitted that the objects on display are truly numerous and artistically appreciable. The exhibition is divided over two floors and includes oriental collections from China and Japan and local ceramics from Saxony. Enjoyable, not unmissable.

Combined visit to the Zwinger, very pleasant. Bright corridors with large windows, pieces on display in an attractive way, especially the part with the animals. The colors of the porcelain are beautiful to look at even for those who don't know much about the genre.

Until the beginning of the 18th century, there was no technology for white porcelain in Europe, and Oriental porcelain was a symbol of the wealth and power of feudal lords. Augustus the Strong even acquired a vase called Dragoner Wasen from Prussia in exchange for 600 dragoons. There are plenty of things to see, including a large Jingdezhen vase, a large Arita ware plate, and a white porcelain menagerie by the Meissen factory modeler Kändler. A one-day pass for the National Museums is 24 euros, which allows you to enter all museums in Dresden except the historic Green Vault, making it a great deal. The entrance is on the second floor, but you must first leave your bag in a coin locker on the third floor.

Yep, if you love porcelain, this is your place. I don’t know if this is the biggest porcelain museum I have seen, but there is plenty to ogle here. And it’s not only quantity, many of the pieces are top-notch . Beyond that there are some truly unique objects that were not only real pretty, but impossible not to really, really, really pay attention to, a rarity when it comes to porcelain. It’s pretty, but most pieces fall into certain genres and styles. Here there is some truly wild stuff, like an exhibit of large wild animals that even if you had no interest in porcelain, you would love it. I know I did. Ditto, my wife. As another part of the Zwinger that dazzles and broadens your horizons, you realize you are at a very special place, part of a city that is very special. Within a very compact area, there are more gems than almost any other city around. This is another Rick Steves inspired diversion. I watched the Dresden episode over and over and had convinced myself that I had to fit into some trip we would go on, somehow. I am delighted we finally got there. It’s all highly recommended.

Having visited Meissen Porcelain the day before we thought we might be porcelained out, but in fact this is an entirely different experience. A quite astonishing collection, well-displayed and with a variety large enough to have something to please everyone. We visited this museum plus the art museum and the scientific museum (also in the palace complex) in one day. All different and all brilliant.

The Porcelain collection is in the Zwinger palace - one ticket gives you access to the Old Masters Gallery, the Porcelain collection and the cabinet of Mathematics and Phisics.
The porcelain collection consists of broadly two types of porcelain artifacts:
- eastern porcelain (from China and Japan)
- German porcelain from Meissen
2000 artifacts are on display, just 10% of the objects owned by the museum.
The traditional Chinese and Japanese porcelains were acquired by Augustus the Strong., and they include blue-and-white porcelain from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, famille-verte and famille-rose items, white Dehua ceramics, Japanese Arita porcelain.
The Meissen porcelains are very ornate, with both western and eastern motifs.

How do I buy tickets for both Green Vault facilities on May 27, 2015?
كُتب بتاريخ 25 مايو 2015
Dear DeeDee, David is right that that two Green Vaults are at the Dryden Palace (Residenzschloss). You didn't ask about the Porcelain Collection, but--as David says--it's in a nearby but separate facility, the Zwinger.
There is a Combi-Ticket for 21 Euros that will let you into the Historic Green Vault and the rest of the Residenzschloss, including the New Green Vault. (Separate tickets would be 12 Euros each.)
Because you need advance tickets to the Historic Green Vault, I assume you need advance tickets for the Combi-Ticket as well.
The New Green Vault is filled with treasures, and hassle-free. The Historic Green Vault is filled with treasures, but is not hassle-free. However, the Historic Green Vault is more impressive, because the treasures are displayed in incredible rooms with rich decorations. So, the Historic Green Vault itself is an attraction, in addition to its contents. Each of the Vaults requires a half-day to be enjoyed, in my opinion. So, if you have a full day it would be worthwhile to see them both. If you have a half-day, I would pick one or the other, depending on my preference. Both are definitely worth seeing.
If you are at a hotel, the concierge should be able to get you advanced tickets for the Historic Green Vault, or Combi-Tickets. If are not in a situation with a concierge, use the numbers or e-mail address that David provided. There is a website, but for some reason it can't be posted in the answer.
NOTE THAT THE ENTIRE RESIDENZSCHLOSS IS CLOSED ON TUESDAYS. If you are constrained to a Tuesday, you will miss both Green Vaults, although you can see the Old Masters Art Gallery and the Porcelain Collection in the Zwinger/Semper complex. (They are open on Tuesdays, but closed on Mondays.)
Both Green Vaults are worth a special trip, so don't give up!
Sincerely,
Herman from Buffalo
