We found this port/marina very easy to use. We caught the Traghetti to Capri from here, as well as over to Positano. The access to the area is easy to get to...and the directional signage is helpful to get to where you need to go.

The town of Sorrento boasts two harbours, both nestled beneath the cliffs the town sits atop and fronting the Bay of Naples. At the western edge of the town is the Marina Grande and in the centre of the town is the Marina Piccola.
East of the town is a third harbour, Porto Marina Di Cassano in the neighbouring municipality of Piano di Sorrento and further east is another small breakwater fronting the beach below the town of Meta.
As their names would suggest Marina Grande is at least in theory the larger of the two harbours with berthing for over eighty vessels. However, it is Marina Piccolo that is the busiest of the two.
Behind the breakwater that almost encloses it, there is berthing for over seventy vessels of all types. They are for the most part yachts and pleasure craft with a few fishing vessels. Many of the former have been repurposed for the tourist trade.
What makes Marina Piccolo the busiest port on the north side of the Sorrentine Peninsula though is that is the main ferry terminal for the area. Here there are daily departures of all sorts of ferries and hydrofoils across the bay to Naples and to the islands of Ischi and Capri.
Some even circumnavigate the peninsula and visit the towns of Positano and Amalfi on the southern side. More than one ferry company operates here and their offices and ticket booths are located in close proximity to one another around the Via Luigi de Maio.
The ferries operate year-round dependent on the weather in the bay, but their frequency really picks up during the tourist season from April to October. For example, during this period there are more than thirty trips to and from Capri alone in a single day.
Fishing boats, yachts and ferries are not the only vessels to visit Sorrento. Its also a possible destination for cruise ships. None of the harbours though are large enough to accommodate ships of this size. They anchor out in the bay and use tenders to ferry their passengers ashore.
To the west of the Marina Piccolo are a series of pebble beaches both public and private beach clubs, some belonging to the hotels above them in the town. There are also a couple of beaches to the east of the harbour also easily accessible.
There are several seaside cafes and restaurants located in the area. Many cater to the ferry passengers in need of a drink of light meal before or after their trip.
Despite being on the bottom of the cliff, the Marina Piccolo is fairly easy to access. Public transit stops here with local buses going up to the centre of town, the train station, and one even all the way to the beach at Meta.
There are also several taxis although the cost is a bit prohibitive. We were quoted 25 Euros for a six-minute trip to the centre of town. Driving here is not recommended as parking is both limited and expensive. Cars, buses and taxis all reach the harbour along the Via Luigi de Maio which follows a narrow cleft in the cliff.
One can also walk. The Via Luigi de Maio has a narrow sidewalk and a steep set of stairs reaching from the bottom to the top of the cliff at the Piazza Tasso. Further west by the beach clubs is a series of stairs and switchback ramps reaching from the waters edge up to the Villa Comunale di Sorrento a city park with a great view of the bay. Here also is the easiest way to and from the Marina Piccolo, the Sorrento Lift, an elevator built into the cliff.

Not worth visiting on its own merit alone (we went to investigate ferries). There are a couple of bars/restaurants and ticket booths for the ferries - you can’t walk anywhere at sea level.

Marina Piccolo is the newer, larger port. Marina Grande is the older and smaller port. Go figure.
This is where we caught the ferry to Positano and Amalfi.

Excellent place to spend an hour in the evening. View of Sorrento from here is great and so is the skyline in the sea. Wasn't very busy when we visited. Taking the lift to reach here is a great option.

We walked down the many steps from Piazza Tasso to this marina 1 evening on our holiday to Sorrento as we thought it would be interesting to see. We were disappointed & I wouldn't recommend visiting Marina Piccola unless you're catching a ferry from here to Capri or Positano etc. There's a small marina of boats, a few restaurants & some sunbathing jetties that you have to pay a lot of money for which were closed because it was evening, you walk behind rows of changing huts that isn't a nice view & you can't see the sunset from here. We much preferred Marina Grande as there's a beautiful view of picturesque fish restaurants & the gorgeous sunset from there. We went back up to Sorrento town centre by the lift which was about €1.20 each, well worth not climbing up the steps, you come out at the Villa Comunale viewpoint. Overall there's not much to recommend Marina Piccola, go to Marina Grande instead.

This marina is great for catching a ferry/boat, with many lines serving quite a few destinations including Capri. Not sure it's worth a side-trip down down down the bluff otherwise.
If you are catching a ferry, some lines require you check in before boarding, others do not.
Especially for the fast boats your boat may not have the ferry line's name on it - we took a SNAV pre-booked trip to Capri and headed to the end of the pier for the SNAV labelled boat. Oops, wrong boat - go back to the start of the pier and up to the walk-on boat dock. We were *not* the last people on, but 4 more minutes and we would have missed our boat :)
This is a pretty spot, all of the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Penninsula are dramatic! Allow some extra time for catching your ferry and all will be la dolce vita. There is a well-staffed cab stand at the marina for when you return.

Sorrento è una bella città, solare e colorata, peccato per i pochi servizi relativi alle spiagge. Ottimo snodo per Capri, Ischia e costiera amalfitana in genere. Abitanti molto cortesi.
