‪I review not the church in question but the cloister that from the main entrance is on the left! It is accessed with a voluntary contribution, I must say that I found this cloister very interesting! I found out by chance through a blogger who gives directions about Rome. The interesting cloister for paintings on the walls and ceiling! I review the church voice because I couldn't find the voice for the cloister! Enjoy visiting you people of TripAdvisor.‬

‪It's a lesser-known basilica than other churches in Rome, but if you go around the Pantheon, visit it. It is one of the few religious buildings in Gothic style and occupies the area where there were some temples, one of which is dedicated to Minerva. The history of the church is very ancient and dates back to the eighth century. Today, behind the white square facade and under the cobalt blue vaults, there are works of art of immense value: Michelangelo's Redeemer, frescoes by Lippi, some sculptures by Bernini. St Catherine of Siena is buried there and there is the tomb of Blessed Angelico.
Since World War II, the Finnish community has celebrated its Mass here and since 1985 the rite, celebrated on January 19, has become ecumenical: Catholic, Lutheran and Orthodox.‬

‪Perhaps less known than other Roman churches, but no less beautiful, the Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, due to its Gothic style, is a rarity in the capital.
Located in Piazza della Minerva, a few meters from the Pantheon, it is striking for the beauty of the external facade and the cobalt blue of the vault. The interiors also host very valuable works of art (such as paintings and imposing marble groups) and above all the tomb of Saint Catherine of Siena, the destination of many pilgrims who devoutly leave notes with requests for thanks and prayers.

‪It is one of the rare examples of Gothic art in Rome. Simple on the outside. The interior reserves a continuous series of surprises, from the blue colored vault with each vault decorated, to the presence of the remains of popes and saints, such as Catherine of Siena. Certainly among the most beautiful churches in Rome. ‬

‪The Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
Admittedly, it is slightly hidden away, towards the back of the Pantheon and it’s facade is relatively plain, with no indication on the outside of the treasures inside.
However within, you will find a beautiful Michelangelo, sculpture, ‘The Risen Christ’ (also known as ‘Christ the Redeemer’).
There are no queues to get in, no barriers or glass around the work, entry is free and you will be able to stand in front of the sculpture and admire it for as long as you like, with no-one in front of you blocking your view. In all likelihood, there won’t be anyone else around you at all.
Facing the altar, it’s the figure to your left.
What you see here is a David-like sculpture of Christ, holding the large wooden cross, upon which he will be crucified. By the time, Michelangelo produced the statue in 1521, he had already produced his most famous works, the statue of David and the painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
There are several other treasures here also so you need a bit longer than you might expect. It’s more than a quick look-see visit.
Even the ceiling is beautiful. It is a sea of dark blue sky with gold stars and golden rope-like vaulted ribs.
After the Michelangelo, we crossed to the other side of the altar to look at the 15th century Cappella Carafa. It’s wonderful. Decorated by Filippino Lippi, the highly detailed and colourful scenes are devoted to the stories of St Thomas Aquinas and Mary. The upper frescoes depict Mary’s assumption into Heaven. She stands on a cloud, surrounded by angels. Some angels prop the cloud up on their shoulders but the musical angels caught my eye. Floating alongside the cloud, they are creating a racket on a range of musical instruments. Trumpets are blaring, one angel plays something that looks strangely like bag-pipes, and another whacks away on a set of gaudy, red and white striped drums strapped to his waist. There’s a lot of fanfare going on. Mary’s entrance into Heaven is not going to be a quiet one.
Other highlights in the church include a memorial sculpture by the famous Bernini, honouring Maria Raggi, the shrine of St Catherine of Siena, the tomb of Fra Angelico, and Fra Angelico’s painting of the Virgin and Child.‬

‪This is a Dominican church built between 1280-1370, just to the east of Pantheon on a small public square by the same name. It is open daily from 11am-1pm & 3pm-7pm daily. What you will find is Gothic interior that has retained much of its original design and layout along with a Renaissance style facade, fronted by a unique Elephant Obelisk monument by Bernini.

Within Sana Maria sopra Minerva, you will find a high central nave with valued ceiling featuring red ribs and a bright blue celestial patterned ceiling fresco. Amongst the various side chapels you will see, make sure to spend a few minutes at the Carafa Chapel which is adorned with late 15th-century frescos by Renaissance master Filippino Lippi. Michelangelo's Christ the Redeemer sculpture (1521), tombs of Catherine of Sienna and Fra Angelico are among other highlights within the church.‬

‪Nowhere in the world is church hopping as enjoyable as in Rome. We pooped into a church right next to our hotel and we find...a Michelangelo. Another beautiful baroque masterpiece.‬

‪You may have visited this magnificent church several times, but if by chance you pass by it, you cannot resist its charm without entering inside once again.
The church takes its name from the temple of Minerva Chalcidica on whose remains it was believed it had been built in the early Middle Ages.
On the site currently occupied by the Basilica and the adjoining Dominican convent, in ancient times there were some Roman buildings of great importance: the temples dedicated to Isis and Serapis, the main sanctuary of the Egyptian cults in Rome, as well as the one erected in honor of Minerva Chalcidica, built by Domitian and from which the name of the current Church comes.
It was rebuilt between the 1200s and 1300s by the Dominicans, modifying a previous church that belonged to the Greek nuns of Campo Marzio. In the 16th century the architect Giuliano da Sangallo modified the choir and in the 17th century Carlo Maderno enlarged the apse. In the mid-19th century, the Gothic forms, now irreparably lost with the Baroque interventions in the interiors and on the façade, were restored. In addition to the great masterpieces, the church preserves the tombstone of the painter Beato Angelico.
It is the best-known Dominican Church in Rome, as well as one of the very few examples of Gothic architecture in Rome, a place rich in historical and artistic memories.
In it you can admire the extraordinary beauty of unique masterpieces, belonging to different styles and historical periods, in one building that is a treasure chest.
Located a short distance from the Pantheon, the Basilica is also famous because it houses the remains of various characters illustrious, including St.Catherine of Siena and the painter Beato Angelico.
Thanks to the financial support of Pope Boniface VIII and many faithful, construction of the large three-nave Gothic church began in 1280. The source of inspiration was the basilica of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, the church which is the supreme symbol of the Dominican order, but with a more simplified scheme compared to the original model. The construction was finally finished with the façade only in 1725 thanks to the intervention of Pope Benedict XIII.
Although the exterior appears extremely sober, with a linear and simple façade, it is the interior of the Church that houses numerous works of art of immense value, an example of which are "the Christ of Minerva", a marble statue by Michelangelo Buonarroti, created in 1519-1520, the work in memory of Maria Raggi, a sculptural monument designed and executed by the artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1647 as well as the Bust of Giovanni Vigevano from 1617-1618.
Other famous artists such as Baldassarre Peruzzi, Giovan Battista da Sangallo and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, protagonists of Renaissance architectural culture, worked in the basilica in the first half of the 16th century in the reconstruction and expansion of the apse to place the funerary monuments of Leo VII, the Popes of the Medici family.
Another monument worthy of note is the Aldobrandini Chapel, where you can admire not only the precious works carried out by eminent architects and sculptors such as Giacomo Della Porta, Girolamo Rainaldi and Carlo Maderno, but also and above all the altar canvas. In fact it preserves inside the canvas depicting the "Institution of the Eucharist", also known as "The Last Supper" (oil on canvas, dating back to around 1603-1607) by the painter from Urbino Federico Barocci known as il Fiori, while on the sides of the altar there are the marble statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul (dating to around 1600-1604) by the Vicenza sculptor Camillo Mariani.
Finally, one cannot fail to mention in relation to Santa Maria sopra Minerva, the Carafa Chapel with its very famous cycle of frescoes by Filippino Lippi, considered one of the highest examples of late fifteenth-century art present in Rome.
Located on the right side of the basilica and dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Thomas Aquinas, symbolic figure of the Dominicans, it was built towards the end of the 15th century at the behest of the charismatic Cardinal Carafa and is truly an admirable work of great refinement.
With reference to the history of this church: for those who don't know yet, on 22 June 1633 the Italian astronomer ans physicist Galileo Galilei, accused of heresy, abjured his astronomical theses in the convent adjacent to the church, for centuries the seat of the Holy Inquisition.
Splendid.‬
