‪I attended a wedding and it was wonderful. The church is sober on the outside so rich inside. Note the many crystal chandeliers hanging on the altar and arranged in two parallel rows a short distance away. The only problem is the impossibility for people with disabilities to climb the many steps.‬

‪Located on the top of the Capitol, between the Place du Capitole and the monument to Victor-Emmanuel II.
You have to climb a large staircase before you can access it but the effort is worth it.‬

‪A ridiculous over the top church. Ridiculous amount of decoration, including multiple chandeliers, never seen any reason for this nonsense, ‬

‪The climb up to this Basilica is well worth the effort. This is stunning, with many fine paintings and works of architecture inside. The man in the little gift shop to the side was very hospitable and even gave us information in English on specific works of art and architecture within the Basilica. It’s a pity that there is no translation into English and other languages on any sign/point of information. It is all written in Italian only. There is no admission charge.‬

‪The most striking feature of this Capitoline Hill basilica is the huge number of stairs to get up to it. 124 to be exact.
This was enough to put me off although I’ve since learnt that the plain, drab facade hides a very lovely interior so I’m a bit sorry now that I didn’t just take a deep breath and head up the stairs.
Inside are relics or remains of Helena, Constantine the Great's mother. Later, inside the Capitoline Museum, we would see a statue of Helena in centre place in the Hall of Emperors so it’s a shame we didn’t go inside the basilica. It would have been good to make the connection.
I’ve also since learnt that you can enter a side door from Piazza del Campidoglio - I wish I’d known that sooner.
The marble stairs in themselves are quite a feature. Built in the 13th century, the marble was mostly scavenged from ancient sites.
Apparently in the 17th century, it was a favourite haunt for travellers, foreigners and peasant farmers who travelled into the city markets. They often slept overnight on the stairs. It can’t have been very comfortable and you’d have thought they weren’t bothering anyone. However it bothered Prince Caffarelli enormously. Fuming away in his palazzo on Capitoline Hill, he ordered barrels full of stones to be rolled down the stairs until eventually authorities intervened and closed off the staircase with gates.
A curious superstition also surrounds the stairs. It was said that if a woman climbed the stairs on her knees, she could ensure a pregnancy.‬

‪In the year 1348, the marble staircase with 124 steps was built as an offering to the Virgin for ending the plague that was ravaging Europe. On our first visit to Rome we didn't want to go up because we were really exhausted, but on this second opportunity we did and it was worth it. A 6th century building in Roman Gothic style, 22 columns, incredible frescoes and a wooden ceiling to admire surprise us upon entering. In 1994 the image of the Santo Niño, which was highly venerated by the people, was stolen; it could never be recovered and was replaced with a copy. You can also access the temple from Piazza del Campidoglio.‬

‪Near the Altare della Patria and the Capitoline staircase there is a steep staircase that leads to the Basilica. The external facade of the church, bare, without any frieze, of bricks does not provide any clue about the beauty of the interior. The church is certainly very ancient, with 3 naves separated by marble columns, each different from the other. The floor is also made of marble, with geometric designs of various colors. Inside, in the hushed silence, I reflected on how many people over the centuries have walked right there, stepping on every meter and making the floor so smooth. The nativity scene was still set up in the left aisle from the entrance. The wooden and gilded ceiling is also beautiful. I visited it just before closing for the evening, there was no one there, little light as it was already dark outside. It was a nice moment of reflection‬

‪The Church of the Franciscan order is located next to the Campidoglio Square.
To get to it, you have to climb more than 100 steps; This task is worth it, to see this medieval style church.‬

‪Originally, it was named Santa Maria in Capitolo, since it was located on the Capitoline Hill in Ancient Rome; but by the 14th century it had been renamed. Like every ancient church in the city, this one also has its legends, in this particular case it is said that the church was built on an Ara primogeniti Dei of Caesar Augustus, in the place where the Tiburtine sibyl prophesied to Augustus the arrival of Christ. In 1571, Santa Maria in Aracoeli hosted the celebrations in honor of Marcantonio Colonna after the victorious battle of Lepanto over the Turkish fleet. In 1797, with the Roman Republic, the basilica was deconsecrated and converted into a stable. The church, however, is most famous for the Holy Child, the sculpture that, according to tradition, was carved from the wood of the olive trees of Mount Gethsemane. The Bambinello dell' Aracoeli was loved by the Romans who attributed miraculous powers to it, such as raising the dead and curing the seriously ill. It was stolen in 1994 and never found again. Today you can find a replica of it. Further back in time, on July 9, 2021, the funeral of the singer Raffaella Carrà took place. The basilica can be visited every day from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., as it is a functioning temple, it is advisable to respect the people who are going to worship and the masses. that are celebrated today.‬
