We made a real trip just for this church of which we had heard so much. And it was very interesting and it was worth it.
The church of San Giovanni Bosco is located in the square of the same name in the Tuscolano district.
The imposing dome, inferior in size only to the Pantheon and St. Peter's, makes the church an unmistakable presence in the south-eastern landscape of Rome. The project is the work of the architect of Sicilian origins Gaetano Rapisardi.
The church was designed together with the square to give it a unified character. This sense of unity is achieved through the giant order of the façades of the residential buildings that are around.
The traditional style of the church together with the use of travertine for the façades of the buildings and for the cladding of the basilica recall themes of Italian architecture before WWII.
The layout of the church is almost primitive: two domes rest on a 20 m high rectangular base, the smaller one in correspondence with the altar and the larger one in the centre, about 47 m high.
Two bell towers, of the same height as the major drum, are part of the layout. The façade is divided by pilasters into seven bays. From the central section stands out a high relief depicting the Apotheosis of St. John Bosco by the sculptor Arturo Dazzi. It is composed of six marble statues depicting the archangels Michael and Gabriel by Ercole Drei, the popes Pius IX and Pius XI by Francesco Nagni, the saints Francis de Sales and Giuseppe Cafasso.
Beyond the façade there is a portico. On the central door the apostolic motto of Don Bosco is carved in Latin: "give me souls, take the rest", while on the doors there are the symbols of the four evangelists with the four moments of Don Bosco's life in Rome by Federico Papi.
The other four doors, with writings from the Bible, are surmounted by large arched windows, flanked by two bronze statues by Attilio Selva representing St. John the Baptist and the risen Christ.
Inside, the entire surface is divided by twelve pillars into three naves, of which the central one is 29 meters wide, the lateral ones 3 meters.
The height of the transept, separated from the church by four pillars, is divided by two large choir lofts, of which the one on the left houses the large organ with 5,000 pipes.
Beams arranged in an orthogonal and diagonal direction form a huge box 3 meters thick, from which two circular large bands covered with polychrome mosaics originate.
The drum of the main dome is made up of two loggias: the lower one is 10.50 meters high and is closed on the outside by large windows, the upper one is 6.65 meters high and is closed on the inside by glass.
In the same manner is the drum of the minor dome, which, above the mosaic band, has only one order of colored glass windows and is located above the presbytery like an elegant canopy.
The current presbytery was adapted to the post-conciliar liturgical norms in 1992 and is the work of the architect Costantino Ruggeri.
In the centre, the majestic altar is a single block weighing 12 tons. On the sides of the altar there are 4 angelic groups supporting small urns containing the relics of St. John Bosco and St. Domenico Savio. The tabernacle, the crucifix and the presidential throne are the work of the sculptor Pericle Fazzini.
The back wall looks like a grandiose scenario that rises up to the smaller dome. It is an area of 220 square meters where the large mosaic by Giovanni Brancaccio, made up of 15 million tiles, stands out by contrast from the two candid bas-reliefs stage scenes that flank it.
The external appearance is quite massive and dominated by the main dome on top of which four bronze angels stand out. The beauty of this church, however, is above all in some details of the interior, such as the mosaics of the two domes and especially the one behind the altar, of about 100 square meters.
And then you may admire the polychrome glass windows, which create extraordinary light effects and finally the chandeliers of the side aisles, made of Murano glass.
If you happen to be in the neighborhood it is worth a quick stop.
Recommended.

Può piacere, come no...
