Entry is free. Open Friday-Sunday Interesting and easy to tour in an hour. Staff friendly and helpful. Parking is difficult so park in the garden square which is metered

We walked past this medieval fortress castle on our way from the train station to the Villa d’Este and Tivoli Gardens.
It was closed when we passed by and as far as I can tell it’s not open very often.
Fortunately you don’t have to go out of your way to walk past it as it’s just next to Piazza Garibaldi and only around the corner from the villa.
Without going inside, what you see here is a smallish but severe looking fortress with a square structure and 4 round towers.
Built it in 1461 by Pope Pius, it was designed to protect the city against the enemy within rather than outside attackers. A popular uprising was more likely than any external attack.
Originally it had a drawbridge but this no longer remains. In the 19th century it was used as a district prison until 1960.
Unless you happen to see it open, this is a just a very quick stop on your way to Villa D’Este.

Quando un paese piccolo come Tivoli ha troppo accade l'inevitabile: che non sappia gestire intelligentemente le bellezze che ha. Sono arrivato fin lì per vederla e ho trovato chiuso. Ho chiesto al giornalaio di fronte e mi ha detto che la aprono raramente, solo per eventi.

An old magnificent castle in the mddle of the town of Tivoli well worth visiting. It is really well conserved and do get there.

Lindo castelo no meio da cidade. Mas é uma pena não poder entrar para conhecer por dentro, deve ser lindíssimo! Mesmo assim vale a pena

Rocca Pia si vede da lontano , le sue belle torri sovrastano l’anfiteatro di Bleso situato sotto ma purtroppo entrambe sono chiusi , la Rocca però merita anche solo la visita esterna

Il voto tiene conto del solo esterno. La Rocca, posta appena fuori il centro storico, appare ben tenuta e imponente nelle sue forme, peccato non averla potuta visitare.

Imponente fortezza a pianta quadrilatera con torrioni cilindrici merlati, costruita nel 1462 per volere di Pio II. Di severa bellezza, disadorna e austera la Rocca è stata testimone di molteplici avvenimenti storici. È un vero peccato e una vergogna che sia chiusa al pubblico!
