Make sure you are fit and able if you are walking this, brilliant experience but god was i tired when i reached the top, only to have to get back down after! you can take a bus up to the top but part of the experience I feel is walking it. Lovely views of Bologna at the top. Toilets and a water the top.

Splendida giornata in su e giù per il Portico più Lungo del Mondo ! Domenica autunnale, temperatura sui 12 gradi, un poco di foschia non ha permesso il bel panorama limpido dal Santuario. Tuttavia una bella esperienza attraverso i 666 archi, tanti turisti lungo il percorso e tanti sportivi sia a corsa che in bici. Nella parte bassa verso Porta Saragozza tanti localini per poter apprezzare le prelibatezze di Bologna.

Vale sempre la pena affrontare la salita. Questa volta arricchita da un piatto di gramigna al ragù di salsiccia presso il ristorante che sta vicino la basilica.

Bologna è la città dei portici, ce ne sono ovunque e questo è uno dei più lunghi, praticamente monumentale con i suoi 666 Archi

A vigorous walk/hike that most people can do if you take your time. We did it as a party of 5 - 3 adults (in our 40s/50s) and 2 13-year-olds. We walked approx 40 minutes from our Airbnb in the city center to the Arco Meloncello, which picks up the portico right before it climbs up the hill.
You can also take the cute mini-train from Piazza Maggiore, which will drop you off at the top so you can walk down(much easier).
The portico sheltered us from the hot summer day, and we felt so accomplished when we made it to the top. Be sure to bring a water bottle-you can refill it at a drinking fountain at the church at the top. Highly recommend!

These Porticos are not only stunning but the walk to San Luca wouldn’t be as fun without them! They also shield you from the extreme heat or rain! Genius!

Extenuante camino porticado hasta llegar a la Basílica de San Luca. Las vistas al llegar merecen la pena después de hacer un esfuerzo considerable en subida. Para bajar hay un trenecito que te lleva hasta el centro de la ciudad.

We walked from the center of Bologna to the top. It is about 3.7 miles from the center of town one way. Reaching the Portico winds through the streets of Bologna and is an interesting walk with lots of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops on the way. The entire trip took us about 4 1/2 hours. You are under porticos about 50% of the walk. Good exercise to burn off all the pasta.

Il portico conta di 666 archi, 498 gradini e 15 cappelle. Con i suoi 3,796 km pare essere il portico più lungo al mondo. Inizia dall'Arco Bonaccorsi a Porta Saragozza e conduce fino alla cima del Colle della Guardia, dove si eleva il celebre Santuario della Madonna di San Luca. Percorrerlo a piedi come ho fatto io è un'esperienza bellissima, anche se faticosa. Consiglio quindi di scegliere una giornata non troppo calda! Ma merita veramente.

Where in bologna centre do I catch the bus to the start of the portico?

It is near the city hall. If you have trouble finding it, check with Tourist Information, which is in the same piazza as the city hall. They will direct you to the bus stop
