The church is located in the center of Milan, just behind Piazza della Scala and next to Palazzo Marino. Built in mannerist style, it has several beautiful works inside.

Lately I have entered this church several times, the façade of which has been hidden from view for a few months as it has undergone conservative restoration work.
The internal hall however amply repays thanks to the works of art of various kinds kept in it, including the admirable Deposition by Simone Peterzano and a splendid polychrome ceramic by Lucio Fontana.
As described in my previous reviews, the church is also inextricably linked to the memory of Alessandro Manzoni, who attended it assiduously. He finally fell on his steps, an accident that caused his death a few months later.

The church dates from 1579. Like all other churches, it has undergone numerous renovations. There is no particularly interesting inventory in the church.

Built at the end of the sixteenth century, the church of San Fedele, or of the Jesuits, overlooks the quiet square of the same name in the center of Milan. The interior of the church has a single nave with side chapels in which several interesting altarpieces are kept, such as the Vision of Saint Ignatius, a valuable Deposition of Christ and the fresco of the Madonna del Latte, much venerated by the artists of the nearby Teatro alla Stairs. Another element to observe are the masterfully carved confessionals. San Fedele is also famous for being the church usually frequented by Alessandro Manzoni, who fell down the stairs of this church and suffered injuries which within a few months led to his death. A monument dedicated to the famous writer is visible right in front of the facade.

When the nearby church of Santa Maria alla Scala was demolished (in 1776) to make way for the theater of the same name, the works of art it contained were transferred here to San Fedele, starting with the beautiful Deposition by Simone Peterzano (who was the master of Caravaggio).
But what is striking in this church of the Jesuit fathers is certainly the stimulating coexistence between ancient, modern and contemporary art.
So if, as soon as we enter, on the left we have the Counter-Reformation with Peterzano, along the right side we can admire - just before the sacristy - the work of Lucio Fontana inspired by the Sacred Heart.
In the altar temple, Parmiggiani's crown of thorns and the fascinating work of Ettore Frani (refreshing, given that it dates back to 2018).
Behind the altar, above the magnificent wooden choir which is a masterpiece of cabinet making, here is the light and the divine in Dave Simpson's monochromes.
Before going down into the crypt, here is the Chapel of the Dancers where the dancers of La Scala came to pray, there are also the ...silver shoes, the work of Mimmo Palladino. And also the new work by Christiane Lohr (dated 2020) for the dome.
The San Fedele crypt or museum: focus on the sarcophagus of admirable workmanship, but here Lucio Fontana returns with his Via Crucis. We move on to the works of Nanda Vigo before being absolutely amazed, or rather shocked and hypnotized by Jannis Kourellis' Unveiling. Or the Apocalypse It is a large sack hung with a rope from a beam. A cross inside (which we do not see, but clearly imagine) presses, almost as if the bag cannot bear its weight for long.
A clear message for the Church: history that must be freed from all those contradictions and ambiguities that cross it and hide its truth.
Extraordinary to see such a work in a church.

church certainly less noble than the cathedral, despite being very close as the crow flies (it must be 200 metres); the visit is divided into the free part (the church) and the museum of San Fedele which includes a tour of the private parts of the church (sacristy, crypt and chapel of the dancers), as well as other areas dedicated to temporary exhibitions during the visit; overall it is a place worth visiting, moreover in a very central position and therefore also when passing through; Having to make a personal ranking, from an artistic and "impact" point of view, I would definitely put San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore and the Duomo ahead of San Fedele.

This is a nice church, but a bit different. The altar was fenced in with a gate. It is small, but very nice looking inside, and plain and ordinary outside. The exterior looks less like a church and more like a courthouse. If you are not focused, you will walk right by it and not notice it.
