The Pirelli Hangar Bicocca is a splendid venue used as an exhibition space for permanent or temporary exhibitions. I went back to see the exhibition dedicated to Jean Tinguely. Beautiful exhibition, but beautiful settings and services. Large parking lots nearby. Easy to find and turn. Next door there are two shopping centers with many services: Bicocca Village and Centro Sarca. Very impressive also the lighting of the works on display!

“Pirelli Hangar Bicocca”, an exhibition dedicated to contemporary art, is one of the most important testimonies of the outstanding function that Milan plays today in Italy, as a city of culture.
It's also a document of the patronage of the leading economic classes of the city: the firm “Pirelli”, promoter of the structure and founded in 1872, is still today among the world leaders in the production of tires.
However, the buildings in which the institution is located are originally due to another leading Italian industrial firm, “Breda”, a mechanical company founded in 1886, dedicated to diversified production, and for a long time the main one in Italy in the construction of locomotives and railway carriages.
Railway production on the one hand, and giant electrical transformers on the other, were precisely the former destinations of the premises of the exhibition. Today, completely restored, they host temporary exhibitions of high level, which follow one another.
At the time of our visit (November 2024), the exhibition “A seed under our tongue” by Saodat Ismailova and an exhibition dedicated to Jean Tinguely are underway.
Ismailova, born 1981, an Uzbek filmmaker, is present here with the simultaneous projection - in the large available rooms - of seven long films in a continuous loop, producing a strong scenic and emotional impact, dedicated to different topics, but all concerning the culture and nature of Central Asia.
Tinguely (1925-1991), is a Swiss author quite well known for his production of works of art of all sizes, all consisting of potentially self-propelled mechanisms: “the machine is first and foremost the instrument that allows me to be poetic” is the phrase by Tinguely that in my view best conveys the meaning of his art. There are 37 works exposed here, notable for their visual and auditory effects.
In-depth information brochures, in Italian and English, are freely available for both artists.
Aside from the temporary exhibitions, Pirelli Hangar Bicocca also hosts an outstanding permanent exhibition, that of the “Seven Heavenly Palaces” (2004) by the German sculptor and painter Anselm Kiefer (born 1945). It occupies the huge hangar (3000 square meters and 30 meters high) once used for the production of electrical transformers, and strikes the visitor with the presence (also enhanced by adequate lighting) of seven ghostly towers built with elements of containers and reinforced concrete. In the author’s intentions, these towers hark back to ancient civilizations that have disappeared, which created monumental architectural works - now ruins - to celebrate the divine.
Last but not least: viewing all the exhibitions, permanent and temporary, is completely free.
Getting to the exhibition by public transit is possible using the metro plus buses. However, we preferred to simply walk for about 1 km, from the “Sesto Marelli” metro stop (line 1, red).
Overall, Pirelli Hangar Bicocca seemed to me to be an excellent exhibition. I will definitely visit the exhibitions dedicated to new artists, on my next trips to Milan.

In this huge exhibition space in the Bicocca district, I found a work that is perhaps not immediately understandable, but visually is really sensational in my opinion: The Seven Heavenly Palaces of Anselm Kiefer. Amazing work and visible for free.

Amazing Anselm Kiefer towers that express his angst and art. And his huge canvases that require reflection in this cavernous space. Usually, there is also a special exhibit worth seeing (and worth going back often)

I had the opportunity to visit the current exhibition at Pirelli’s Hangar Bicocca, an extraordinary space used for contemporary art that continues to amaze with its ability to transform former industrial spaces into authentic temples dedicated to creativity and cultural innovation. Free admission makes this experience even more accessible, inviting a diverse audience to explore the wonders of art in a context that is itself part of the narrative.
As soon as you enter the gates, you find yourself immersed in an environment where light becomes the undisputed protagonist. The wide open spaces of the Hangar are designed in such a way that every ray of sunshine or play of shadows can be appreciated as an integral part of the works on display. Artificial lighting is expertly used to highlight the beauty of sculptures and installations, enhancing every detail and creating atmospheres that change depending on the time of day. Walking through the various sections, you have the feeling of being guides in an alternative universe, where light dances in synergy with matter, animating works that oscillate between surrealism and surprising realism.
Particularly touching was the visit to the final Pavilion, dedicated to “Seven Heavenly Palaces” by Anselm Kiefer. Here, the German artist faces the desolation of the world through monumental works that evoke deep reflections and restlessness. The imposing and evocative buildings seem to tell a story of transience and a humanity that has stopped taking care of its land. Walking among these creations, you feel small and powerless in front of a world that slowly seems to die. Kiefer manages to convey a very topical message, inviting viewers to reflect on our impact on the environment and society.
The structure of Hangar Bicocca is a perfect example of urban regeneration. Its industrial origins are preserved, helping to create a unique atmosphere, where history is intertwined with innovation. The large space is also easily accessible by car, with convenient paid parking in the immediate vicinity, making access to culture a stress-free experience. What makes this visit even more enjoyable is the ability to pre-register online to skip any queues, a detail designed to facilitate the visitor experience.
Entering the main lobby, you will immediately come across a vibrant information point, a cozy Bistro and a bookshop full of publications on current exhibitions and contemporary art. During my visit, I noticed two temporary exhibitions alongside that of the seven heavenly palaces. Each new exhibition brings with it the power to stimulate thought and imagination, inviting you to discover new perspectives and worldviews.
This visit to the Bicocca Hangar was therefore not only a visual experience, but an emotional journey that stimulated personal reflections and a deep connection with the works of art. In a context where light and space dialogue harmoniously, the visitor is invited to walk a path not only aesthetically but also intellectually, opening up to new interpretations of contemporaneity and our existence in the current world.

Absolutely amazing in the context of the scale and simple magnificence of the exhibits. The permanent display is just breath taking and the current temporary one, equally as great. And it's got a great Cafe as well. Definitely worth a visit.

Heavy rain outside, a bright atmosphere enjoyable inside the Pirelli hub which hosts spaces dedicated to contemporary art in succession, walking among sculptures and compositions that are sometimes surreal and others of surprising realism. The final Pavilion by Anselm Kiefer is especially striking with the Seven Heavenly Palaces which personally conveyed anxiety when thinking about the desolation of the world left to slowly die. Under an increasingly distant sky. Rickety towers of shapeless remains. But I appreciated all the exhibiting artists with their creative commitments that denounce nature mistreated by modern man. A well-made refreshment break in the entrance bistro with superb salads.

Ann Veronica Janssens' exhibition, Grand Bal is an exhibition that deals with light in all its forms, I was fascinated by the details and emotions that these works offer. It is no longer here but I recommend seeing it if there is another occasion.

Huge series of hangars hosting a mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions. Worth visiting for the phenomenal Ansell Kiefer exhibition alone, though the current temporary exhibitions are also strong. Free admission, good cafe/restaurant. Highly recommended.

La visita all'Hangar Bicocca è gratis.

In tutto puoi stare 3 o 4 ore.
ciao!
