Massive city gates on the Castelvecchio period city walls and still the main entry point to Plaza Bras for over 900 years. You can see them from a distance when coming up from the bus and train stations. The clock faces on both sides were so those working outside the city walls could see the time. (well that was what we were told?)
Yes it can be busy with traffic but i think it shows the continuance through time of cities growing but still showing how they have grown. Far too many cities destroy older parts using the excuse of improvement and modernising. For us it was nearly the focal point of the plaza as the Arena was shut for maintenance repairs and had heras fencing and lorries all around the side in the square, which definitely lessened the impact in photos. You can certainly get good photos of these old city gates

The Gates of Bra separate the ancient part from the rest of the city along the route of the medieval walls. A Porta della Braida towards the countryside was already there in medieval times but the current structure in marble and with two fornicas is documented from the sixteenth century. The clock is nineteenth century. Nice door and you have to pass.

This is the primary entry point for pedestrians and vehicles moving into the city from Piazza Bra. It is comprised of two marble arches topped with crenelated red brick walls which form a walkway.
It was first sited in documents in 1257 as having only one arch. In a fresco by Nicolò Giolfino (1476- 1555), the double arches are shown, for the first time, indicating its expansion took place between the end of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
In 1871, after several failed attempts, a clock was finally installed between the arches. Count Antonio Nogarola gave the community a clock, and positioned it so that visible from both sides of the portal.

While we were in Verona, we often walk past Piazza Bra and the Verona Arena. This beautiful gate is definitely quite imposing and beautiful. We love the perfect two marble arches with the large clock on top.
The red brick work is the same as the Castelvecchio nearby.

This structure was a gateway built into the medieval city walls in the late 14h century in order to link Piazza Bra and the old city to the surrounding countryside.
The dual marble arches are topped with a crenelated red brick wall. There is a clock in the middle of the arches that dates to 1871. We thought that there were far more impressive gateways in places such as Siena.
What struck me was that you could not get anywhere near them, even to take a photo, given the large amount of cars and trucks using this section of the road. There were also cars and/or trucks parked in front of the structure, it seemed like all hours of the day.
This is not a must see.

Gateway to the ancient city that clearly separates the two parts that make it up. Meeting point and symbolic monument next to the Verona arena

Two arches that give access, or exit depending on how you look at it, from the city towards the Verona porta nova train station from or towards Piazza Bra.

Despite the name, the Bra Gate looks little like a gate, but rather an arch connecting the Pentagon Tower and the Maffei Museum. However, in the Middle Ages they were full-fledged gates built into the city wall. The end of which was the Scaliger Bridge. Only the jagged, swallow-tailed battlements above the arches remind of the former defensive function. The clock, planned for installation since the 16th century, was only installed after the victory of the Risorgimento in 1872.
