Uno di quei punti che ti permette di ammiarre la dicotomia tra uomo e natura, da molti dei punti panoramici presenti nella risalita del Monte Pellegrino, si riesce a cogliere in maniera sensibile, come da una parte ci sia il caos cittadino, le auto, il traffico e l'inquinamento e alle proprie spalle una vera e propria potenza della natura incontaminata (che viene purtroppo sempre più "contaminata" dall'inciviltà dell'essere umano).

caught the bus up to the top for wonderful views and a very nice cooling breeze - a change form the oppressive city heat. nice place to sit down for a while and relax. Shame its not looked after a bit better, so much litter, and a lovely statue of santa rosalia sprayed with graffiti - so sad. hard to find any reliable info on the bus, but caught the 812 bus from just off Piazza Don Luigi Sturzo. Info states that they go every 1hr 15mins, but in reality seem to be every 15mins, passed 2 on the way up and saw three leave during our 1 hour visit. 15min stroll back down the road gets you to the church of S. Rosalia and a couple of nice cafes and a few tat stalls. All things considered, a very nice morning out.

un punto panoramico di eccellenza su Palermo e parte della costa . Un luogo simbolo per i palermitani dall'alto valore religioso. La Santuzza, santa Rosalia è lì che guarda e vigila sulla città dall'alto. Purtroppo molti gli aspetti negativi, sporcizia, sciatteria e poca cura negli spazi comuni vicino all'area panoramica.

nous avons pris le petit chemin très escarpé, nous n'avons pas réussi à finir, avec la chaleur et le chemin, c'était trop diffiicle.

La vista dal belvedere è bellissima e la natura sembra voler contrastare le cattive azioni dell'uomo, che viene fin quassù per imbrattare con bombolette di vernice o per scaricare la spazzatura. Come sempre, è l'inciviltà che rovina tutto. Se così non fosse, questo sarebbe Parco Naturale da mostrare ai bimbi

On our third day in Palermo, we decided to hike up Monte Pellegrino in order to both catch the stunning views but also gain a sense of historical context of this staggeringly beautiful mountain which you see from almost all main streets of the city. Since the bus seemed to have a bad rep (and we were also looking forward to a hike), we decided to walk instead of taking the bus/catching a cab. In the morning of our climb, we received a MeteoAlarm that Sicily was about to reach extreme temperatures so we brought some extra water. We climbed the mountain’s cobble stone path in 1 hour and 45 minutes (while seeking refugee in each strand of shade). We only saw one other company during our entire ascension. Near the top, we were meet with a small square with various cafees and the Rosalia chapel. When we continued onwards on asphalt roads (for an additional kilometre), we finally reached the end of the road which offered a beautiful 360 degrees view of the bay of Palermo and the surrounding beach/coastal towns. On our way down, we grabbed a Granite and caught a bus down to the city centre again
We are quite fit and it was a great workout but we do advice anyone climbing in the July heat to bring some sun protection and an extra bottle of water! You will be rewarded with beautiful views, cacti and some cute lizards on the way up.

Vado sempre con piacere in bici, o con la famiglia a Monte Pellegrino, dove si trova il famoso santuario di Santa Rosalia. Molti bellissimi belvedere che dominano palermo ed il mare. Li si trova il bar del Ritrovo del ciclista dove prendo la buona spremuta arance e melograno.. consigliatissimo.

Bit of a mission and not a lot to see.
The palemero Side of the hill is the place to start, from here you can zigzag up for about 40 minutes and get a nice view of the city and Bay. From here there’s not much else to see. The summit is taken up by an electrical tower so you can’t go there and there aren’t many more views to be had.
There is a small place in the middle with a couple of shops and a cafe. Here you will find the church in which the Saint of the city is worshipped.
And that’s about it..

Der Blick, der sich auf den Serpentinen bietet, wandelt sich ständig und ist phantastisch.
Beim nächsten Besuch würde ich den Pilgerweg aus der Stadt wählen, mindestens für den Rückweg - haben wir auf dieser Reise leider wetter- bzw. gewitterbedingt ausgelassen.

Hello, I am visiting Palermo in October and would like to trek up to the Sanctuary of Saint Rosalia, where is the best place to start the trek? I would be starting from Palermo Side of the mountain.

Hi Cris, the best place is from via Martin Luther King (see the map). From there an old road (XVII century) until the Sanctuary of Saint Rosalia. Good trek.

Rispondo con ritardo e me ne scuso: consiglio di percorrere a piedi la vecchia strada seicentesca con belle vedute su Palermo. La via Ercta non è percorribile.

Hello, any advice how to get here by public transport? Obviously not to the top of Monte Pelle but as closest as possible, as i m unsure how is distance from town to mountain , thank you

It's pretty far, there is a bus driving to the church on top which is a scenic view, too. Use the website Rom2Rio dot c o m to get bus times and stops.
