Fascinating that it continues to be used to regulate the level of water in the Lake. For the key reason of preventing flooding. All resulting from technology of the mid 1800s when it was unveiled.
Achieved by manually removing or inserting timber needles that comprise the structure.
White-water was to be seen, resulting from the rapid pouring through the narrow aperture.

Very interesting to hear about how this works. Never heard of such a way to control water...seems very unique.

Das Reusswehr - oder Nadelwehr - ist eine historische Anlage zur Regulierung des Wasserstandes des Vierwaldstättersees. Es wurde 1859 - 1861 erbaut und ist heute noch in Betrieb. Bei Hochwasser werden einzelne Holznadeln, welche jeweils etwa 3 m lang und 30 kg schwer sind, von Hand aus der Reuss gezogen. Umgekehrt werden sie bei Niedrigwasser wieder ins Wasser gelassen und auf einen Sockel gesetzt. Das Wehr befindet sich zwischen Spreuerbrücke und Reussbrücke. Eine Informationstafel am Ufer gibt Auskunft über die Funktionsweise. Ein empfehlenswerter Besuch, wenn man sich in Luzern aufhält.

La diga di Reuss (conosciuta anche come diga ad ago) fu costruita tra il 1859 e il 1861 ed è un monumento tecnico e architettonico.
Ancora oggi il livello dell'acqua nel Lago dei Quattro Cantoni viene controllato manualmente rimuovendo o inserendo i cosiddetti aghi (tavole di legno). Grazie alla regolazione, il livello dell'acqua del lago può essere mantenuto ad un'altezza ottimale per la stagione.
Ci si imbatte caminando sul lungofiume in direzione Spreuerbrücke

On ne pourra pas rater ce "barrage" à l'ancienne qui se trouve sur la Reuss entre les deux ponts de bois réputés de la ville. On longeant le fleuve, on tombera immanquablement sur cet ouvrage qui vaut le détour car il n'a rien à voir avec l'image des barrages que l'on peut avoir et qui sont d'un style moderne (tel que l'on peut en voir par exemple à Genève sur la rade ou à Versoix (Rhône). Le Nadelwehr est un barrage à aiguilles du XIXe siècle sur la Reuss, en utilisant des madriers pour contrôler le débit d'eau du lac des Quatre-Cantons. Construit entre 1859 et 1861, cet ouvrage est un monument historique impressionnant tant sur le plan de l'architecture que de la technique. Encore aujourd'hui on régule manuellement le niveau du Lac grâce à ce système.

Vodná nádrž uprostred centra. Nie je to až tak zaujímavé, možno až na hukot vody, čo určite deti poteší.

This was not what I saw in google. The ohotos in google showed pristine green coloured water restricted by an array of wooden or metallic god knows what sticks that comprise the dam. But in reality the water is not green. It is rather blackish. The adjoining falls is good though.

The Nadelwehr or the Needle dam was constructed in 1800s for controlling water level of Lucerne city. We had a quick stop here where our guide explained us how this functions, but didn't have the luck or more so the time to witness its functioning. Would be pretty amazing think. Simple tools put to work effectively !! Great thing is such an old idea of engineering is still functional today.

Passeggiando sulla riva tra I due ponti di legno si passa da questa curiosa diga che regola le acque tra il lago e il fiume ancora nel modo tradizionale con l’inserimento manuale di pali di legno. Quando ci sono ripassato a fine novembre dopo giorni di pioggia era regolata con un’apertura stretta e il defluire dell’acqua era uno spettacolo. Curiosità di antica ingegneria idraulica e pittoresca.

I had heard about this site and watched a video showing how it works before we set out on our trip to Lucerne, so I was pleased when our guided walking tour took us to this area. This "needle" dam has been regulating the water level of Lake Lucerne since the 1800's. The floods of 2005 destroyed part of the dam but it was restored and extended between 2009-2011. Spikes of wood or "needles" are added or put in place depending on the need to lower or raise the water level of the lake. I would have enjoyed seeing workers doing this task, but youtube has several videos that show how the water level is manually regulated. If you are on a walking tour of the city, you will probably come to this site.
