As Americans living in Milan, we visited a lot of places within easy driving distance of where we lived. We went to Bellinzona and fell in love with it, so we went often and took visitors with us. We visited the Chiesa Collegiata and, because I am an organist, I was interested in the antique pipe organ, located above the front door. Once when we visited someone was playing the organ, and we heard it played for a while, it was extremely beautiful. I did some research and found that it is a very old pipe organ, built before 1600, and, unlike many old pipe organs, it has been kept up and restored. Upon returning home to the US, I learned that the organist at the church recorded the organ, pipe by pipe, and made a sample set which one can download and then use in a virtual pipe organ, which I have, and then actually play the organ. The sound one hears at home when playing is the same sound you would hear if you recorded, using high quality equipment, the organ in the church and then played the recording at home. Of course, the quality of sound at home depends on the quality of your speakers (or headphones). Therefore one can play this organ anywhere in the world and hear, as well as record for others to hear, this antique pipe organ. Not very many organs in the world have been recorded, but this is one of the best of its kind. If you don't know about this technology, check out Hauptwerk or GrandOrgue.

Aan een pleintje midden in Bellinzona ligt de mooie kerk. De Pietro Stefano is heel mooi, vele wandschilderingen. Een bezoekje waard als je Bellinzona bezoekt

La Collégiale de SS Pietro e Stefano, de style renaissance et baroque, fut érigée au XVIème siècle. Restaurée récemment, de nombreuses peintures ornent les murs. Un sompteux orgue dont les origines remontent à presque 450 ans. Une église magnifique remplie d'oeuvres d'art et de richesses.

The Piazza Collegiata in the center of the old town is - with its outdoor cafés - the most popular meeting place of Bellinzona. When the sun shines many youngsters love to sit on the big staircase in front of the Collegiate church at the square. The 'Chiesa Collegiata dei SS Pietro e Stefano' is the town's grandest and most important religious building. It has retained the name of a collegiate church, but it is now the parish church of Bellinzona and no more governed by a college of canons. Although Bellinzona is the capital of the Ticino, the bishop of the canton has his seat at the San Lorenzo cathedral in Lugano.
The quite austere front, especially in comparison to the for my taste far too overloaded baroque interior, is kept in Renaissance style and covered with white-greyish marble from the quarries of nearby Castione. There are three gates, but only the one to the left is open. The big one in the middle has on top a niche with a statue of St.Peter as well as Bellinzona's coat of arms with a heraldic snake. The most impressive single feature of the front is probably the big rose-window with 12 spokes.
The richly decorated interior has a single nave and 5 side chapels on each side. Behind a kind of pseudo- transept with a dome is the apse with the altar and a painting of the Crucifion, attributed to the late 16th century painter Simone Peterzano from Bergamo, said to be the teacher of Caravaggio. The pulpit is covered in 'Scagliola' style plaster, imitating veined marble. Important elements are also the two holy water stoups, especially the covered one, called 'Trivulzio Fountain'.
The Collegiata was begun in the early 16th century after plans by the architect, who also designed the Cathedral of Como, but work never really ended after that. The many baroque elements were mainly added in the 18th century.

Très beau, très riche en tableaux. A visiter absolument !! Située dans les jolies rues de Bellinzone sur une belle place.

Avendo pernottato a Bellinzona, ho avuto la fortuna di ammirare la chiesa, oltre che all'interno, anche in lontananza con l'illuminazione serale (vedi foto allegate).
Tanto di cappello all'amministrazione che ha saputo valorizzare il suo patrimonio.
Notevoli anche gli interni, finemente e riccamente decorati

На Соборную церковь Святых Петра и Стефана обратили внимание сверху, находясь в Кастель-Гранде. Оказавшись рядом со зданием удалось внимательно рассмотреть экстерьер. Очень понравился главный фасад собора, разделенный на три части, великолепно украшенный статуями и розой по центру. Посетили собор. Внутри очень красиво. Интерьер богато оформлен в стиле барокко.

This is a true treasure and an absolute must see. Placed in the middle of old town this church has one of the most beautiful and amazing interiors that you would expect to see here. No pictures are allowed which is very sad because this is probably in the top twenty best in the world. More color and architectural beauty ever in the details inside. Can not even convey in words the beauty of this building.
