This is an amazing space with an incredible story. We were greeted warmly by everyone we encountered while visiting. We were encouraged to explore the nooks and crannies of the place, and watched for a few moments while a Cantor (Possibly Rabbi?) was teaching a gentleman how to properly roll the Torah. The amount of detail was fascinating. The ticket also includes admission to the museum across the street which was well laid out and told the story of Judaism in Amsterdam. Most sobering was learning about the locked seats which had contained the prayer shawls and books of so many who never returned after WWII. The contents were eventually removed and placed into storage.
As a Shiksa with many Jewish friends, I was aware of the rituals surrounding the Mikveh, however I had never seen one, so being able to see two was very interesting to me. The Sukkah was gorgeous!
I highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in Jewish or even just WWII history, it was well worth the five hours spent between the Synagogue complex and the Jewish Historical Museum.

The Jewish community thrived and studied in this compound. The synagogue is illuminated by candlelight only.

The richness of the Jewish Community from the 1600s until 1940 can be found in the Museum and nearby Synagogue. The museum will also explain what happened to the Jewish Community during the years of Nazi occupation, when 80% of the community was deported and murdered at Sobibor, Auschwitz and elsewhere.
Just opened within a block is the Daniel Liebeskind - designed National Holocaust NamenMonument - where every one of the 100,000+ Dutch victims of the Nazi's is named in a stunning and moving memorial.
This visit is worth your time. The Synagogue, in particular, was extremely unique.

Visiting with Jewish relatives made this synagogue more meaningful. So much persecution for the faith, heartbreaking.

The best place to explore Amsterdam's Jewish history and heritage. Stunning architecture and artifacts in a beautifully-preserved interior.

The Portoguese Synagogue in Amsterdam is very beautiful, and very well kept. Also, incredibly interesting is the Treasure Museum located on the same grounds.
Staff is very helpful an friendly, and the explanations provided through the self-guided tour are very good and comprehensive.
A small shop has interesting books and other articles.
The entrance ticket to the Synagogue also provides entrance at no extra cost to:
- the Jewish Historical Museum (right across the street from the Synagogue)
- the Children Museum
- the National Holocaust Memorial and Museum

Certainly interesting enough to look around and educational. The audio tour went on a bit too long at each point in my opinion. There is a "Press A for further information" choice on the audio handset at the end of each bit, so some of the information could have been there rather than in the basic explanation.
It is a very large synagogue with a significant history so worth the visit, but the connected buildings (office for example) really not all that interesting.

Are there lines ot get in? Do you need advance tickets?

There were no lines the day we went.
The website says "Ticket is valid for one month." Does this mean I can visit the different sites on different days?

I went to the Synagogue late in the day, and they were kind to point out that the ticket was valid for the other sights on other days (although I remember validity for a week not a month)

Hi Silvia, with a ticket for the Jewish Cultural Quarter you can visit all four locations. All in less than a square kilometer. you can decide for yourself how much time you spend per location. most people spend at least one hour in the Portuguese synagogue.

I would like to visit the Portuguese Synagogue only. Is there a way to buy a ticket to 1 venue? If yes, how?

Can tickets be purchased when visit or should they be purchased in advance for a visit between April 23 and 25?.

No need to buy in advance, head to the holocaust museum and you can buy 4 attractions for 15 euro. Good value, holocaust museum a bit of a disappointment, but the synagogue makes up for it. Check out the Tropenmuseum, close to the jewish quarter and a real hidden gem of Amsterdam!!

We are visiting Amsterdam April 22-26. When should we get tickets to see the synagogue? Can we buy tickets when we visit or must we purchase in advance?

Hi Sillygranma, you can purchase your ticket on forehand and select the date of visit. With your ticket you have access to all locations of the Jewish Cultural Quarter during the following 30 days. Tickets are also available at the door.
