Ook dit hofje is de moeite waard. De entree is erg mooi, de hal onder de regentenkamer en dan weer zo stil hofje. Geniet van alle hofjes, last de verschillen in architectuur tot je doordringen, sta er voor open en zie dat ieder hofje weer echt anders is!

We stopped into this almshouse on a guided tour of Leiden. It was one of several almshouse we were invited to have a look around.
This one was pretty typical of this type of property – a main wooden door through an archway from the street to enter the property and then small residences (usually with a narrow front door and sometimes a small window) surrounding a small central courtyard.
You can see that the residents try to keep the courtyard clean and are making it cozy and pretty by improving the garden. Other almshouses we saw on our tour were slightly better maintained with neater gardens, sculptures or unique features like water pumps.
These places may soon encounter problems being visited constantly by tour groups and tourists who don’t realize that people are actually living in these properties and they should respect the area by keeping their voices down and not lingering for too long or peering into people’s front windows!
Our tour guide had to constantly ask other visitors to ‘keep it down’! Leiden Tourism should post visiting rules or guidelines at the entrance to these properties.
Also, it’s lovely that it’s free and open to the public, but a nominal fee should be charged or a donation box placed at each almshouse to help with the upkeep or funds used to continue the tradition of helping those in need. This I think would be the best tribute to these beautiful properties and to be able to keep them open for everyone to enjoy for centuries to come!

Het Schachtenhofje is maar een klein hofje maar ik vond het toch aardig het even te bekijken.De bewoners willen graag rust en stilte als u er even bent om het te bekijken.
Het is vaker open vergeleken met Sint Annahofje ertegenover.
Historie:De fabrikant van linten en veters Anthonis Jacobsz van der Schacht had vroeger armoede gekend toen hij in een weeshuis opgroeide.Na zijn dood tijdens de pestepidemie van 1669-1670 werden de huisjes die hij en zijn vrouw bezaten een sociaal woningproject;het Schachtenhofje.
Architect Willem van der Helm ontwierp de voorgevel van het Schachtenhofje tegenover het Sint Annahofje.
Het is vaker open vergeleken met Sint Annahofje ertegenover.
