Dit grootse monument staat midden op een plein omringd door veel groen in een wijk met mooie panden. De moeite waard om even te bekijken.

The Independence Monument can be seen from the road ( a little bit difficult to access it by feet!).

The "Monument Plein 1813" is a plaza in Den Haag. It's not a typical continental plaza with lots of cafes etc. It's literally a monument on a sort of roundabout, but not difficult to cross to get up close. The monument on the roundabout is the Dutch ‘Independence Monument‘ and commemorates several related events that all occurred in 1813. The defeat of Napoleon, the end of French occupation of Netherlands, the introduction of the Dutch constitution and the return of the House of Orange as a constitutional monarchy.
The monument is a square column topped with a allegorical firgure of victory. Just below her are four figures. One of the returning Prince of Orange, Willem I agreeing to the new constitution. Two allegorical figures of Peace and History referencing the freedoms enshrined in the constitution and a sculptural ensemble depicting the individuals who formed the then interim government.
The monument is a little away from the main tourist circuit in Den Haag, but worth a look if you have time.

We happened on this when we were just walking around the area. This is a nice statue which has flowers going around it at the bottom of the steps which is nice. The surrounding roads and houses are nice to have a walk down too. There are lots of nice trees surrounding and the place is quite peaceful and calm which is nice. This is a nice place to go walk to and also explore the surrounding streets. There wasn't any traffic really so can easily walk over to the statue as it is a island in the road. The trams do go past the statue so if you don't want to walk you could hop on one to see it.

The Monument Plein 1813 is a significant monument which celebrates Dutch independence and a little more and was constructed in mid-19th century. The square on which the monument is situated is rather unremarkable as it is a little too far away from the city centre and it seems to be a little isolated even! There is a nice little garden around it with some lovely plants and flowers and there a few trees as well. The monument commemorates a number of events in Dutch history, such as the defeat of Napoleon, the end of French rule, the introduction of the Dutch constitution and the official beginning of the monarchy, all of which took place in the year 1813.
At the very top of the monument stands the victorious Dutch Virgin, holding a flag and to her side stands a lion. Below her, there are bronze statues on all four sides of the pedestal, symbolising the commemorative events which the monuments stands for.
It is probably not a must-visit sight, but it would be nice to make a bit of time to see it as it is such an important part of Dutch history and culture. We came across it by chance and were quite happy to take a few snaps and spend some time viewing it.

Nice square but not something to get really excited about. The good thing is it is really close to the Peace Palace and Panorama Mesdag, just a few minutes walking. So you might as well have a look here.

I highly recommend studying the history of this monument before going to see it. This 22m tall monument was unveiled in1869 to refer back to the historic events in 1813. Back then Dutch history was restored from France and Willem Frederik returned back to the Netherlands. A lot of interesting symbolism in the monument.

We visited Independence Monument at Plein 1813 whilst we were in the area. The monument recognises the independence and foundation of The Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1813 and the end of the French period. The structure was unveiled in 1869 by Prince Frederick of the Netherlands and was designed by architect Willem Cornelius van der Wayen Pieterszen. The monument is very grand and is in keeping with the equally grand area where it is located. The monument can be reached by Tram #1 or is a 10 minute walk from Centrum.
