Small museum in the heart of town. It's an important place in history because of Wellington's time there. Those who appreciate history, or enthusiasts of the Battle of Waterloo will most certainly get something out of it. Others may just see an old building with some artifacts and paintings in it. In this case, I attended with my brother who is a fan of this period in history. There was more in it for him than me but as a historian, I feel it could be a better experience.
The attendant behind the desk wasn't entirely welcoming. Emotionless, no personality, not even a smile. Conversations - or attempts at them - were awkward. As for the museum itself, it's mostly a collection of artifacts and artwork (big emphasis on the artwork) as you move from room to room. I personally found the digital guide to be uninteresting (monotone voice) and eventually stopped using it altogether. The rooms could have been organized better in my opinion. You get information about stages of the battle but then the timeline jumps all over the place. Rooms on the back half of the upper floors are devoted to principal players in the battle (Wellington, Napoleon, William of Orange, Blucher) and their rise to prominence. The timelines, therefore, jump forward and backward from 1815 repeatedly. I would think these "biographical rooms" are better suited as you start your tour. Then you have a background on each player before understanding their moments in battle. That just me though.
As my review title suggests, it's a good spot for those interested in the battle itself and what the building means to that moment in history. If you're just passing by, you probably aren't missing much by skipping it. Then again, for 6 EUR, it won't break your budget either.

If you are doing the sites of the Waterloo battlefield, this is the place to start. Firstly, it is located right in the centre of Waterloo so geographically it is the logical place to start. But, more importantly, this is the place where you will get the best overview of the battle. The exhibits are interesting in their own right and are set up well to tell the story of Wellington's stay at the Inn.
Across two of the rooms there are a set of maps with the various locations and formations of the armies marked at different hours of the day of June 18. The audio guide explains the progression of the battle making use of the maps. This is invaluable for when you visit some of the other sites. At the 1815 memorial, for example, there is a great 4D movie, which makes much, much more sense if you already have a chronological sense in your head of how the battle progressed across the day. The first time I visited the memorial I had not been to the Wellington museum. The movie was far more enjoyable on my second visit because of the knowledge I had gained through the Wellington Museum's map display. The animation at the Hougoumont Farm will also make much more sense if you already understand the significance of the location to the battle overall, which the Wellington Museum will provide.
If you plan to do more than one of the sites, it is definitely worth getting the 1815 Pass, and starting here.

Nice museum with interesting article. Tells the story more from Wellington's view rather than Napolean. Definetly worth a visit as part of the Waterloo tour.

A faire +++.

quick visit ..
if you have time it's worth seeing. Interesting Lego exhibition, besides you can see the rest of the museum in 30 minutes (some paintings, rooms, some weapons, a leg ...).

Awesome and part of the Waterloo experience. Very reasonably priced and a short bus ride from here to the Lion Mound. The museum itself was Wellington's HQ and a fascinating museum, the staff are knowledgeable and welcoming.

Accueil très sympathique, visite très intéressante et instructive. L'expo Playmobil vient compléter la visite du musée surtout pour les plus jeunes qui comprennent mieux les forces en présence.

The Wellington Museum across from the tourist office at Waterloo would be fairly interesting to you as a historian. As a previous response, there are battle maps, arms, the room where Wellington stayed, etc. However, it would be of minimal interest to you children. But, the battlefield, diorama, etc. would be interesting not only to you but also your children. As a previous response indicated, the W bus is across the street from the Wellington Museum to take you to the battlefield and the lion mound. At the top of the lion mound (many steps but fun), you have metal map diagrams for each geographical direction. Inside of the battlefield museum building next to the lion mound, you will find a brilliant 4D reenactment of the battle with hoses and men seeming to come right at you. Outstanding and your kids would like it but some parts might be a little scary for them. You will have to decide on the spot.

Thinking of visiting this in September with our friends. Is there a car park big enough to park two motorhomes in and no height restrictions?

Would expect in September it may be a little easier to park I was there in January and the new visitor centre was under construction I would imagine parking be ok unless you have the massive mobile homes, plenty parking so you should be ok
