The Old Town of Funchal is really cool. The area is one of Funchal's main tourist hotspots, popular for its historical and architectural. there are several cafes and restaurants.

É um importante e histórico capítulo do Funchal. Ruas estreitas, cheias de cor e animação, com bares, esplanadas, restaurantes e a sua rua mais emblemática (rua Santa Maria). Apetece vaguear e apreciar todos os pequenos pormenores da zona velha. Não deixe de ir.

Quartiere vecchio di Funchal ora meta obbligata specialmente la sera. E' caratteristico anche se assai turistico ormai, è pieno di ristorantini e locali dove si mangia molto bene a prezzi contenuti e si ascolta musica dal vivo. Le viuzze hanno tavoli da entrambi i lati e davvero c'è solo l'imbarazzo della scelta.

Zona Velha/Old Town, one of the oldest (and very poor and dangerous up until recently) areas in Funchal is located between Rua do Visconde Anadia and Traveessa das Torres. The area is one of Funchal´s main tourist hotspots, popular for its historical, architectural, gastronomical and artistic aspects. Zona Velho combines a picturesque setting of narrow cobblestone streets lined by aged buildings (some dating back to the 15th century) and a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. It includes points like Miradouro do Socorro, Santa Maria Church, Capela do Corpo Santo, Mercado dos Lavradores and the famous Santa Maria street.
Like in many other old towns around the globe, the city council here has initiated a project in an attempt to revitalize this part of town and make it more culturally significant for both locals and tourists.

This is the lovely heart of Funchal that you must visit. There are many streets filled with shops, cafes and restaurants. There are plenty of places to sit and rest in the sun or in the shade and some good attractions. The streets are lined with colourful trees that smell lovely!
Definitely have a wander around and stop for ice cream!

Excellent restaurant with great food. The waiter Fabio was very helpful and pleasant and very friendly. We ate there 3 times for dinner and every time the food was excellent!
The owner is a very hardworking lady who works alongside her staff doing exactly what they do.
Would recommend this restaurant!

Ir à zona velha do Funchal é imperdivel, independentemente da epoca do ano ou do numero de dias da estadia. A zona foi revitalizada, respeitando o passado. Optimos sitios para a poncha como a Mercearia do Bento.

Many of the streets in Funchal are pedestrian, which means strolling around the typical Madeiran pavements made with pebbles very easy and safe. We spent hours walking around Old Town (Zona Velha) taking lots of photos and discovering hidden little places.
On Santa Maria Street nearly every other door is painted with a different design. They’re all unique and very colourful. They are a hundred or more different ones to find, some down side alleys and some on the main street. You can easily explore for half an hour or more, before stopping to enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants you'll find along the way.
Many many restaurants here in old town (reviewed separately). We enjoyed all our meals especially at Basmati Indian restaurant. Most of the street is pedestrianised and some restaurants are set up outside right in the middle of the street, so it can get a little crowded in these places where the street becomes much more narrow. The cobble alleys at the back of the restaurants seemed very crowded to us, with people constantly squeezing past the packed tables, so we opted for restaurants that opened out onto the front, so we had more space and privacy.
We visited on 2 separate occasions, earlier on the morning is much quieter, before the restaurants open up, but later on there is more atmosphere if it does get a little too crowded.
Remember to try Bola de Caco everywhere you eat in Madeira! This is the local flatbread often served with meals. It is often covered in garlic butter - basically a flat garlic bread but sooooo good!
Zona Velha) is just short couple of minutes walk from the seafront and the Avenida do Mar. The main bus stops and the cable car terminal is also just a couple of minutes walk away, so a very central location. There are public toilets near to the main bus stops.

A zona ficava mais apelativa com menos espaço ocupado por esplanadas. As portas tinham mais visibilidade e para quem visita é o que de mais interessante tem a zona.

Zona Velha is also known as the old town. It consists of a few criss crossed streets that are full of bars, restaurants and numerous pretty individually painted doors. It is also a great place to people watch. If you visit Funchal you really should go for a drink or a nice meal.
