We stayed in Chania as part of a recent cruise.we docked in Souda bay and paid a couple of euros each for a return bus trip from port to a central area of Chania.
The harbour area is absolutely lovely and well worth wandering around.
There are so many little bars and restaurants to rest in and for the more energetic a walk to the lighthouse offers great view back of the harbour.

My wife and myself have been here few times over the years we like the place, always something new to look at, narrow streets with houses that are being renovated the restaurants, shops the views. There’s a lot to see and do, the main bus station is a short walk from the Harbour about 15 minutes and local buses from 1866 Sq. There’s also a taxi rank.

Our visit was on a lovely sunny weekday and it was most enjoyable. The walk around the harbour was nice and then we continued to walk around to the light house and back again.
The harbour itself was nice and easy to get around, but the wall leading to the light house is uneven, so maybe not a great idea if you have mobility issues.
It takes around 30-45 minutes to walk the whole harbour and back again (obviously depending on how long you linger to take pictures etc).
The harbour had lots of seating at tavernas for food and drinks. We selected a place to have a drink and watch the people go by.
As you move back from the harbour, the side streets are full of little greek shops. A most enjoyable area.

Ενδείκνυται για βόλτες , περιπάτους και μπορείς να καθίσεις σε ένα από τα πολλά μαγαζιά και να απολαυσεις τη θέα. Στολίδι της πόλης.

Beautiful scenic harbour. We visited on a cruise ship for a day and were so impressed we came back for a week!
Great views, whichever way you look, and very pleasant, whether in daytime or an atmospheric evening. If you visit Chania this is the must see location to visit (probably more than once)
Lots of bars, restaurants around the water and great for people watching.

Loved walking around here! We liked the inner harbour more as it was quieter and the restaurants were better quality and value. We also loved the Venetian Quarter by the outer harbour - such beautiful, quaint narrow streets and good restaurants and bars.

Beautiful small harbor with a lighthouse. We walked around it in less than 30 minutes. Enjoyed a dinner and people watched.

Full of history & well worth visiting in Chania. We walked along the harbour wall up to the Venetian light house. One needs to be careful as it can get too crowded & some parts are narrow.
The area was so pretty. As well as various historic buildings overlooking the harbour, there are souvenir shops and dozens of restaurants along the sea front.

Très beau coin pour flâner, boire un verre ou se restaurer. Boutiques de souvenirs très sympa. Dommage que beaucoup de rabatteurs insistent chacuns à leur façon pour choisir leurs restaurants, cela est lassant à la longue. Même si on est conscient que le tourisme est primordial pour les Crétois.

Une promenade dont on ne se lasse pas, particulièrement agréable tôt le matin, avant l’affluence, ou en soirée : les puissantes murailles, la jolie mosquée rose, les bâtiments anciens qui témoignent de l’activité portuaire, les hautes maisons étroites, la jetée, le phare et, bien sûr, la baie. Jalonné de cafés et de restaurants, on peut y prendre un verre plutôt que d’y manger. Au tout début de la rue Angelou, faites une halte à Top Chania, une boutique qui présente notamment de splendides tapis et couvertures anciens.

I wondered if you could advise what part of Chania Old Town I should stay in. I have trawled the internet for advice, but cant quite get the answer I am looking for. Looking down on the map, there is the touristy half horseshaped area where the main eating area is, but then the Venetian old harbor down to the far right of the map also has eateries AND accommodation. I have found a nice apartment right down in the Glafkou area. Do you think that is too far out?? Thank you

The Venetian old harbour is an ideal location to stay whilst visiting beautiful Chania.
It’s not too far from everything & will be quiet as it’s away from the restaurants & bars

Hi David, a group of us are cruising on Princess Cruises in June and I'm just wondering if you may have gone on a cruise yourself and if so, where your ship docked? Anywhere near here?

Hi everyone, i have not gone on a cruise in a while, but if you plan on traveling to Chania specifically, you will stop at the Souda Port in Chania and then to get to the Venetian harbor you have to take a car or a taxi to Palia Poli as they call it in Greek. It should take about 15 Mins to get their.

Я бы рассматривал вариант перелёта в Ларнаку (около трёх часов, билеты около 75$) . Далее автобусом до Никосии. А уже непосредственно там, при необходимости в пешем порядке пройдёте границу на северную часть Кипра.
P.S. Если у Вас менее 14 дней отпуска, не рекомендую жертвовать ими в пользу Кипра. На Крите очень много достопримечательностей и интересных мест, для которых не нужен перелёт.

Any advice on which hotels are best to stay in to get the best out of Chania and that area. Ideally I'd like a hotel near the sea for swimming but handy enough to walk round the old town etc. Thanks.

The Royal Sun is up on the hill but they have free half hourly shuttles until midnight. around 5 minutes away.
I rate this place highly because it punches above its weight. The rooms are large as is the pool and although it's priced as a 3 star hotel it's really 4 star. We paid around £50 a night

It is raining SO hard in Platanias right now!! It is meant to be rubbish all day tomorrow too!!! Booooo. Advice please? What can we do where can we go? Going out of our minds in the villa! Thanks xx

Lots of museums and stunning churches in Chania Town centre , you can get the bus there and back direct from Platanias. We are still on Crete and have suffered the same weather. If you've transport you can travel up to the monestry , which is well worth a visit it's to the west of you as you climb the peninsular.the vet amicably centre off the road into Melame is supposed to be good, though I've not been

Yes. I went in a one day trip to Santorini with SeaJets.
From the harbour of Rethymno to Santorini it takes about 3 and a half hours.
You can buy a ticket in any excursions agency.

it's about 20 mins walk from the harbour, as you look at the sea, turn left past, the maritime museum, continue past the old "factory"?, then past the pool, football pitch, small harbour and café area, then you're at the beach. I did it in about 20 mins on my own, and it was worth the beer at the end.

Regular shuttle buses from the cruise port. 3 Euros return. Very good value. The Destination Services team on board your ship will have full details. You are likely to be dropped near to the Agora. The Old Venetian Harbour is only five to ten minutes from there. You can also take the City Sightseeing Bus which is a hop on hop off service. 15 Euros per person as at June 2015.
