Place to walk to in Chania - nice walk, bit rocky underfoot in places but great views of the harbour and out to sea, I suspect it’s very busy at peak times

Walking around Chania old town and harbour is lovely. In the searing heat and continuing the walk in almost a full circle to especially see the lighthouse is quite a longer n sweaty walk. Is it worth it ? Well the lighthouse I felt was a bit disappointing , locked up nil access. Also zero signage in Greek or English to tell you anything at all about it or the harbour. Yes maritime museum might of told me , but I’m not into visiting the museum and paying to find this out. Seriously, all the tourists out there and nothing to give any context of where u have walked to. Very disappointing. Seeing the ocean and the harbour are the obvious highlights. Just lovely water. BUT stacks of cigarette butts and other rubbish in all sorts of places. OMG do they ever clean up the area???

We loved being in the Old Harbor and being able to see this beautiful structure. It's gorgeous both during the day and at night and it's a very fun walk to get to it. The view of the harbor is also gorgeous from the lighthouse, particularly at night when the lights twinkle off of the water. It's a lovely place to visit and you can't miss it if you're visiting Chania!

It’s a pleasant stroll along the harbour breakwater to the lighthouse (there are two levels but the higher on is quite narrow and has no safety rail). Good views across the harbour and out to sea from the upper level. I don’t think the light is operational and I’m sure the structure is not original.

Fabulous walk along the harbour wall to this historic structure. Very photogenic place in the Venetian harbour. Recommended

You can’t visit it from the inside so the location just will do. Walk towards it and have stunning views towards the harbor and town.

The Chania Lighthouse was originally built by the Venetians.
A chain from the lighthouse to the Firkas fortress could then seal the harbor.
During the Turkish occupation, the tower fell into disrepair and had to be rebuilt.
This was done in 1864 by the Egyptian troops who assisted the Turks against the rebel Cretans.
The Venetian base was retained, with the Lion of St. Mark being removed, but the 26 m high tower was given a minaret look.
In 2005 the tower was recently refurbished .
The tower can be reached via the pier but is not open to the public.

Great photo subject with beautiful views from the lighthouse. You can walk directly along the wall to the lighthouse.

The lighthouse is a stone tower rising 26 metres above the bay.
located at the entrance of the port of Chania, was built in 1864,one of the oldest lighthouses in the world, has been a listed archaeological site in Greece since 1962,
was originally a naval post created by the Venetians that would protect the city from pirates.
In 1645, the Turks took control of the city, during which the lighthouse was destroyed Egyptian troops, rebuilt the lighthouse in 1864: only the base of the original lighthouse remains. Worth a short visit.

How much time is needed to walk to this lighthouse from, say, the last 2 Arsenals or from the bastion of the 16th C wall at the East end of town?

Fifteen minutes at the most, it's a short distance for an able bodied walker.
