The museum is situated next to a small park in the center of Copenhagen with excellent public transportation links nearby.
The Hirschsprung family made a fortune on tobacco. They were great art lovers and donated their collection to the Danish nation around 1900.
Collections include several great works by famous Danish artists such as Michael Ancher, P. S. Kroyer and Hammershoi. When we visited an interesting special exhibition about the Skagen Painter Viggo Johansen was also on show.
The beautiful building dates from 1911 and is also worth a closer look.

I don't give up reporting exhibitions, but the current with women is good, but I'm embarrassed that more texts are difficult to read, because the frames shade. It's much better than on the permanent exhibition, where the artist's name can be read for emergency, but that's all, it's not for older people unless they bring a lup with light

This is a relatively small gallery with paintings donated by the Hirschprungs. Small collection of good quality Hamershoi paintings. Currently there is a very good temporary exhibition on "soldiers".

The finest art museum. Nice experience with a multitude of beautiful, well-known as well as not-so-well-known paintings. Very manageable. A small "but": While we were there, there was a tour in progress where the tour guide was so loud that it disturbed the experience for us who were not part of the tour. Did not fit into the atmosphere of the otherwise fine museum.

The Hirschsprung family made a fortune on tobacco and began collecting art in the 1870’s. The museum is a true jewel with several great Danish works by artists such as Michael Ancher, P. S. Kroyer, Eckersberg, and Hammershoi. When we visited, an excellent exhibition about Kroyer’s less well-known wife, Marie, was on show.
The museum is located in the Museum district with excellent public transport links to most of the city. The beautiful building dates from 1911 and makes a perfect home to the collections.

Nice exhibitions with Skagen painters, big enough to catch up in 1-2 hours. If you have enjoyed the other art museums in Copenhagen and the surrounding area, this is a good continuation.

We went to this museum late Thursday morning and there were not too many people there. There are great exhibits here which showcase a few Danish artists. I would recommend to Art lovers.

A splendid museum, not large, but well organized and structured, not far from the botanical garden and the SMK (Statens Museum for Kunst).
At the entrance, the staff briefly illustrates the contents of the rooms and provides brochures on the permanent collections (the central rooms are occupied by a temporary exhibition): for a first approach to Danish art, "10 masterpieces" to discover in the various rooms. Then the paintings from the period of the Skagen artists, "The Skagen painters", are magnificent.
Finally “Hammershøi and the symbolists”.
For the first visit to this museum I only had an hour available, which was not enough.
I returned calmly (two hours) to be able to fully appreciate these works also thanks to the information / explanations provided (in English as well as Danish).

We don’t see much 19th-Century Danish art in the US, so this gem of a museum in Copenhagen was a real revelation. The artwork is beautifully displayed in a building designed specifically to house the collection. It provides an excellent overview of Denmark’s art scene in the 1800s without overwhelming one (as some larger museums can do).
