‪I went with my 12-year-old so we went through quite quickly and probably didn't appreciate it fully, but it's much bigger than I initially thought when we first started exploring. Some good history of the city, but also Scandinavian and viking culture more generally.‬

‪Meget flot museum. Lækker museumsbutik.
Meget imponeret over alle de lækre og kendte malerier der er. Fx HIP HIP HURRA.
Kommer gerne igen.

‪I was looking forward to visiting this museum, housed in the former Swedish East India Company buildings. I was expecting to learn about all the histories that make Gothenburg so distinctive - colonialism above all in this building, but also industry and labour, migration in past and modern times, and the redevelopment of the port area.

Instead I found generic displays that could be in any port city, with a strong 1990s vibe. There are a few highlights: a Viking boat and a few outstanding pieces of Viking art, and good explanation of how the new city was laid out. Lowlights include the prehistoric displays which really downplay what i suspect is a rich and interesting record, and the East India Company display which is silent on the Comapny's history and the way in which the city grew rich on colonialism and slavery. There are other museums - e.g. in London's Dockland s- that show these fascinating stories can be well told. It also seems the history of Gothenburg ends c. 1900.

The museum spaces are also muddled and unattractive. I'm sorry to be so negative but this museum was a waste of time and money (and notably empty of visitors on a weekend day) and I would have better spent my time in one of the newer museums that are nearby. The City Museum is long overdue a rethink.‬

‪A really great and broad museum about the history of both Gothenburg and prehistoric Nordic times. So many artefacts to see which are beautifully displayed without overwhelming amounts of info. All displays have Swedish and English translations. Really easy flow of the museum and very central and easy to get to.‬

‪Meget interessant museum om Göteborg bys tilblivelse og udvikling frem til i dag. Museets udstilling er opbygget over en stram tidslinje og opleves gennem oversigtsvenlig og medlevende formidling🤩⭐️👍‬

‪Cancelled by tour operator, so did not happen and due to my email account being locked out I didn’t get the email to say it was cancelled. Had to call them from hotel, blamed staff sickness. All refunded now, but disappointing.‬

‪Museum was OK, it was nicely layed out and had a decent flow to it. It felt a bit low on detail of significant events and glossed over them, putting more focus on items and collections of objects. I would have preferred a more in depth history of the city and the region. What happened to it during times like the world wars, etc.

I would suggest investing in an audio guide which you find in many modern museums which could bring this detail in. ‬

‪For a deeper insight into Sweden's second largest city it is worthwhile to visit the excellent Göteborg Stadsmuseum on the Store Hamn Kanalen (big harbour canal). It is housed in a large yellow brick building from the 17th century, that hat been erected for the Swedish East India Company, which traded mainly with tea from China, but which was dissolved in 1813. At the same time there was also a Swedish West India Company, dealing with the Caribbean, where Sweden had a colony for some time, the small island of Saint-Barthelemy.

The City Museum is a history museum on three floors. At entrance level there is a cafe-restaurant and a shop. Further up come first the halls for the prehistoric period, when the area around Gothenburg was first inhabited by Stone Age hunters and gatherers. There are several short, concise information boards in Swedish and English, as in the whole museum, except for the last part, which deals with Gothenburg from 1900 till 2020, where the labels are almost only in Swedish.

A main exhibit from prehistory, besides some figurines, is the the 4500 years old skeleton of the Rolfsakers man. More space is given to the Viking period with as most important attraction the Äskekärr ship, found off Gothenburg. The city itself was founded by king Gustavus Adolfus in 1621, but quite a bit of space is also given to the town of Nya Lödöse, that existed nearby since the 15th century, but which was given up with the foundation of Gothenburg.

Gothenburg with its canals was inspired and partly built by the Dutch. It soon developed into an important trading city, becoming later also an industrial centre. The final section of the museum deals with the last hundred years, when world-famous manufacturers came up here like Volvo for cars or SKF for ball bearings.‬
