Loved this walk. Admitedly we had a brilliant day weather wise which helped a lot
Walk was moderately challenging bt nothing that taking a bit of time couldn't overcome.
Views were spectacular

This trek was an unforgettable experience. You can have long walk here in the company of unforgettable and breathtaking views. The waterfall itself is amazing. Crossing the ford of the rushing icy river on the trail turned out to be an additional unforgettable attraction.

The hike is hard, but WORTH IT. You hike to the starting point. There is an information board with a cool story on it. There is also a rock fin you can walk out on to look around. The actual hike starts by going down the hill right next to/behind the info board. That took us a few minutes to figure out. You walk through the cave tunnel to the river. The river crossing has a few big rocks that get you about halfway across. Those are partially submerged. My boots are waterproof and so were my pants, so I had no issues. There is a cable running across the entire river. Once you cross the rocks there is a log to get you the rest of the way over. It is secured there. Once you cross, it is a very steep hike up the mountain. There are parts with very rocky terrain. Once you get to the viewpoint, there is the option to continue to the top. Do it! At the top, the view of the falls and the surrounding area were breathtaking. 100% worth it. We had read that you could cross the river at the top, to come down on the other side. So we did. That was less fun. There is no designated good place to do that. The river current is fairly strong and the rocks are very slippery. The depth was mainly calf high, but at one point almost to our knees. The hike down the other side was super boring and tough on your knees. It was a lot of walking on baseball size rocks, the kind that try to turn your ankle. We wished we would have gone back the way we came.

I hiked the loop counterclockwise, which is the recommended way. My Apple watch says it took me 2.5 hrs to do the 4.8 miles. You need to cross the river via a log early on. I had been fearing it but found it easy and worry-free. After that you climb up a lot and, although you’re near cliffs, it never felt risky to me. You can get great views of the waterfall even if, like me, you don’t get closer than 5-6 feet to an edge. If you decide to do the loop, then you’ll need to cross the river above the falls. The worst part was that the water was so cold that my feet physically hurt. Hiking poles can help for crossing by adding stability.

This was one of our favorite hikes during our time in Iceland! The scenery was stunning throughout, but you're really in for a treat once you get your first views of the Glymur waterfall. It does require a bit of work. While it's not a long hike, it's not exactly the easiest - although I should note I am personally quite out of shape and was able to make it with some extra effort. You do have to cross a river - a bit of a walk over rocks in the river, then cross the rest of the way on a log that is placed there in the summer months. Then the rest of the way starts an uphill climb with quite a bit of scrambling. A lot of loose rock, so you need to be cautious - the rock walls easily crumble so one shouldn't count on that for support. A couple of the steepest parts of the trail do have some ropes there to help you up (and down). It was nice to refill out water near the top by a smaller waterfall. Some of the freshest water you can ever get! Glymur is absolutely worth the extra effort - both the drive out there, and the hike. Highly recommend as a must-do when in Iceland.

We hiked this with a 12 and 14 year old. We went up the left trail, crossed the river barefoot, and returned on the right trail. I would say it’s moderately difficult. A little steep and slippery at times. The terrain doesn’t force you on the edge of the cliff. The river crossing at the top was cold, but the harder part was the slippery rocks. It was calf deep and the water flow didn’t cause concern. The lower crossing on the log was more precarious. The log only goes halfway across, then you are stepping on rocks. There is a wire to hold the whole way, but the water is deeper and rushing by. There were a surprising number of people here and two tour buses. But overall one of our favorite hikes.

We will be traveling to Iceland April 15th-23rd and was wondering if the log will be in place at this point? It sounds like if the log isn’t there then it’s a really tough hike so not sure if I’d want to do it without the log. Is there a website or anything to find out while we are there without having to drive there and physically look? TIA

Is there a way to know what is the north trail and what is the south trail? I would like to avoid the river crossing. Thanks.

It's a lot of fun and very easy to cross the river - do not avoid it - See my attched pix's how it's easy & fun
The north trail is used for returning
IMO the most stunning views are from the south trail!
Also, if you short in time you better hike the south up and return (and cross the river twice :) we did enjoyed it twice
Though, if you still want to hike the north trail, then, after passing the entry gate look for left turn trail sign (I do remember that they have a trails map on the entrance)
Enjoy

When does the log across the river normally get placed? I will be in Iceland at the end of May (arriving 29th) and hoping to do this hike!

We were there at the beginning of May and it was supposed to be already across, but winter was still hanging on so they chose to delay it. I would expect that the log will be across by now but if it is still snowing there, then it may not. There don't have a specific time when they place it across the river because the weather in Iceland is rather unpredictable... Make sure to bring sturdy hiking boots, an extra pair of socks, and a bottle of water... and your camera
I’m looking to do this hike in late April, is it a marked trail? Also far is the walk across the river?

Hi Joe,
From the parking lot it'll take you about 1,5 hour to get there, so 3 hours forth and back.
The signs are not that clear but the track is visible. Do follow the track getting up and not down to the river, for they removed the tree trunk that crossed the river.

This is okay to do in the winter? We will be there next week and it looks BEAUTIFUL. Thanks so much.

They remove the log crossing in the winter.
I'm not going to say it's impossible. It will be freezing and treacherous, and that's even with the log crossing. Without the log, you are looking at a climb up the west side of the falls, across the river, and down to the usual viewing points. Each portion will present a different challenge. Then you have to do it all over again. It is certainly a less dramatic introduction to the falls.
With the log present, I wouldn't hesitate to go because I could skip the river crossing. Without the log, well, that would require a lot of self-motivation.

Is this hike possible late January?
ElNinoDorado
The log won't be there, and the alternative route to the upper river crossing would be rather treacherous and frigid, to which you would have to cross twice to get back down. I won't say it's impossible, but you better have some cold weather gear and a tolerance for freezing water because you will have to remove your shoes and socks to get across.

How far from the Capital ( Reykjavick) is this hike by car? Does the hike take two and half hours one way or roundtrip? Is the light for pictures better in the morning or afternoon?
Thanks

By car, it's about an hour drive. I think that one could totally do the whole hike in a couple of hours total time. It really depends on how fast you walk and how long it takes you to cross the water. It also depends on whether you do it in the winter or summer. I think total time for us was around three hours in winter snow and having to cross the water without the log. Not sure about the light for pictures. We got to the top around noon and the lighting was good. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Unfortunately not. It is back in a gravel a few km the road. Also, the main route is now through the tunnel to miss this stretch of highway to save miles... So not certain about traffic for hitching.
