It's just an orb, but it's absolutely worth the visit. Because for most of us, it's as far north as we may ever get! For that reason alone, it meant a lot to me to visit. (And honestly, it was one of my favorite Iceland adventures.) After all, it's the Arctic Circle! Puffins galore! (And terns, too, watch out for them.) Beautiful scenery and remote.
I took the ferry from Dalvík in the morning and caught the return trip in the afternoon. I experienced calm seas both ways, but the ferry to Grímsey arrived slightly behind schedule. According to my Apple watch, it's a 4.8 mile round trip from the ferry terminal to the orb and back. I had to hustle to make the return ferry, and I wish I'd had more time to stop and enjoy the scenery. But I managed a fast walk/gentle trail run in about 80 minutes and still had enough time to get an Arctic Circle certificate and to grab a pylsur at the stand by the harbor.
It was a whirlwind trip, but so memorable! I was the only one out on the trail that day, except for the seabirds. On the cliffs near the airport, there were thousands of puffins. Near the airport runway is Arctic tern territory. Watch out for those guys, they have... an aggressive personality.
When I arrived at the orb, I sat down and listened to the sound of waves and birdsong. For a moment, in this very remote spot, I felt like the only person on Earth. It was a pretty wild feeling. I've got a lot of traveling I'd love to do, but I can't imagine making it to the Arctic Circle (or beyond) as easily. So relish the moment, even though the monument is just a gigantic marble.
(Note: Dress in layers (hiking boots recommended, trail is slightly rutted.) High temp for 7/20/23 was 41°. No rain that day, but trail was muddy in spots. Needed to shed my light puffy jacket and rain shell about a mile in.)

The Orb itself is a bit boring, but the walk there is beautiful (takes about 45 minutes each way if you take it easy) and it's really cool to be able to walk across the arctic circle.

Grimsey Island was the favorite stop along the entire trip to Iceland (over two weeks). Everything about this island is fantastic. Birds, puffins, cliffs, hikes, horses, and the Arctic Circle. Talk about great photo opportunities, it doesn't get any better than this! Everything is breathtaking on this island and you won't be disappointed with your visit. Enjoy it in one day using the Saefari ferry or stay longer. If you do visit in one day, there is enough time to see just about everything. The new Arctic Circle marker has move to the very tip of the island. The old Arctic Circle marker is more centrally located. The puffins were amazing, thousands of them all on the island. The hiking trails take you right by some horses grazing on the land. At the end of the visit, there is a gift shop with some great authentic Iceland souvenirs. Opted for a beautiful handmade sweater with the name and location of the lady who crafted it. The items are all authentic and much more affordable then the mainland. So much nice stuff in this tiny shop. Don't miss it if you visit Grimsey. Can't wait to come back to Iceland and visit this island again!

Not worth the torture of the three hours of seasickness to reach it. It's a stone signifying the imaginary line of the arctic circle. Not worth the time, cost of the ferry, or seasickness.

Merece la pena visitar esta pequeña isla sobre todo si quieres ver frailecillos, eso sí al ferry le cuesta bastante llegar. La bola esta, a mi no me aportó nada, pero la isla sí.

After the beautiful hike to the Orbis et Globus it was an amazing experience to cross over the Arctic Circle. I never thought I would ever do that. It should definitely be on your to do list while in Iceland. The hike is along the coastline with wonderful views of the ocean and of the Puffins sitting on the cliffs.

Not quite what I expected for a momentous marker - but ok. I agree with another reviewer that it might be nice to have something say "You Are Here", but it is still pretty cool. It was worth the hike to say we crossed the Arctic Circle.

No signs to explain what it is, too difficult to get to and make it back in time to catch the ferry by foot. They should have a shuttle.

The orb marks the line of the Arctic Circle. For us, being able to truthfully claim that we have visited the Arctic was a top reason we chose Iceland. Thank you, Grimsey!

So after a 3.5 hour ferry ride we immediately started our long hike to the globe. We were told it would be a 2 hour round trip hike but it took us about 2.5 hours because it was raining the entire time and the trail is dirt, so in rain it turned to mud and it hard to navigate. It was definitely not worth the hike to see this globe object, but definitely was worth the hike to say you crossed the arctic circle. The circle moves farther out the island every year so eventually the circle will no longer be accessible this way.

How far is Orbis et Globus from the airport?

We r planning to visit Grimsby Island next year in early Feb, is it a right season n also how long it takes (day trip)?
كُتب بتاريخ 26 فبراير 2018
We went in November and the weather wasn’t bad. The ferry ride to the island is 3 hours and normally stays 2 hours, then takes the3 hour trip back. Be advised when we were there and the seas were rough, thus the ferry came in, dropped supplies, and left-no lay over. The weather was so bad the plane for the day was cancelled.
If you fly on and off the island, it is a total of about 4 hours. But if you are on the plane when the doctor visits the island (once every 4 weeks) it can be a longer lay over.
We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed ourselves.
