Today we did the glacier hike and caves, we were a large group from Costa Rica and they organized everything perfectly, the super professional guides and helped us all the way and also took very good photos. We felt very safe all the time.

Start to finish smiles. Fantastic, informative, fun, safe are just a few words to describe my experience today. We did the glacier hike and ice caves tour. Laurant our guide was incredibly experienced and caring. Before the tour it was noted my boots had a heel and laurant was kind enough to lend me better boots at no additional costs. Not only is he knowledgeable about the area and the geology, but he is enthusiastic about the nature and his job. The rule of the day was to have fun. He is experienced and capable and I could not have felt safer with any other guide. The tour requires excercise and abilities and Laurant was able to keep us all safe whilst visiting challenges. We even had some fun crawling through glacier in a tiny tunnel. I will 100% be returning to this tour. The tour advertises ice cave and a glacier hike with some landmarks but we did and saw so much more. Other tours of glaciers I have been on have been too fast or not as enjoyable. The pace of the tour is great. Because we had good weather we had opportunities to visit further afield for a scenic picnic which felt very special. Laurant is experienced to find safe passage so we even hiked up a glacial river and gorgeous. I have been fortunate to experience many tours abroad such as deserts, rainforest, salt flats, mountains, lakes etc; of all my travels this was the best tour I have experienced in my life.

My mum and I went on a combined tour, glacier hike and ice caves with our great guide today! Best decision ever!!! Our guide Osier (the name is definitely misspelled - sorry :D ) did the MEGA! Super friendly, warm, attentive, funny, lots of knowledge, just great!!! Away from the big groups/(only) Ice Cave visitors! The hike/route and stops were incredibly beautiful. We are still blown away!!! Definitely does both in combination. What we especially liked is that you really think about where it is most beautiful and what people might particularly like, even during it! We really didn’t see another person for the first few hours and saw so many great places where no one else really was! Here it is really important to create a unique experience!!! ABSOLUTELY successful!!! Thank you very much!!!

Kayaking with Frank was one of my highlights during the Iceland trip. Due to the somewhat difficult weather conditions on that day, all other participants originally planned decided against the tour. After a professional briefing, we also got straight into the kayaks. Frank led me relaxed past the glacier and through the icebergs. At times we were the only two boats in the lagoon and it was fantastic to experience this calm and peaceful atmosphere. To top it all off, we also saw seals. Definitely recommendable and with Frank at your side you don't have to worry even in difficult wind conditions.

We had booked a 5h excursion to the glacier and ice caves. Our guide, a local native of Höfn, knew the glacier as his own pocket and showed us incredible places away from the crowds. He also accompanied us super well in the preparation of materials and explanations.
I strongly recommend a bigger excursion that allows you to get away on the glacier rather than “Instagram” excursions where you only make a round trip queuing with dozens of other tourists to see a cave of 10m2.

Best glacier/ice-cave tour we could have hoped for! We got to see the calving site and multiple ice caves/tunnels!!! Our guide (Oussin - sp?) was a born-n-raised local, with many years experience. He helped everyone feel comfortable, providing friendly chat along with a plethora of knowledge about the glacier and Iceland in general.
Right off the bat it was easy to see the difference between our tour and the shorter ice cave tours run by the large companies. Our group only had 6 guests + 1 guide. We parked a little ways away from the main tour trailhead, crossed a river on a cool bridge, got on the glacier, and headed off in a direction perpendicular to the neverending line of people heading towards just the ice caves.
Instead we hiked on the glacier back towards the calving area (face of the glacier where it breaks off into the lagoon). When we arrived we had time for a lunch/snack/picture break, the. We went exploring further up the glacier, gradually circling back around towards the main ice cave area. Along the way we found multiple smaller ice caves and tunnels, the whole time, never coming within 200 yards of another group. Eventually we arrived close to the main ice cave area, and explored one of those for a bit. Lastly we got to rappel about 2-3 meters down into an ice tunnel, which I'm sure none of the main tours do.
Long story short, if you are the kind of person who likes a bit more adventure, and a bit fewer people, this might be the tour for you! 10/10 would recommend!

Fantastic tour and one of our favorites during our Iceland trip! Our guide, Veronika, is knowledgeable, entertaining, and kept us safe from any iceberg flipping perils. She is also a seal whisperer and this was verified with multiple seal sightings during our tour! Stay environmentally friendly and book a kayak tour with Iceguide. We highly recommend Veronika-you won’t regret it! We plan to book a private tour upon our return to the land of fire and ice :)

I had the BEST time exploring Heinabergslón lagoon with IceGuides via kayaks. Our group was led by Bjarni, and he was super friendly, knowledgeable, kind, and funny. He was passionate about the glaciers and navigated the lagoon like a pro. We were lucky to have a brand new chunk of ice which was still ice blue in colour, and got to paddle right up next to it. It was stunningly beautiful. Bjarni jokes that there may be dinosaur bones inside 😂. He also found us some caves we could safely back into to get a cool photo. We finished our tour by climbing onto a stable berg to take some fun photos.
Much more intimate setting and peaceful experience than you would get at the big glacier lagoon.
Some recommendations to others:
- as a solo traveller I was in a solo kayak. I’m pretty fit, so I was able to keep up with the two-person kayaks, but if you’re not, you may fall behind the group.
- teamwork makes the dream work… if you’re on the verge of divorce, tandem kayaking may not be for you.
- definitely use the toilet before the tour starts. Just trust me.
- they recommend 2 pairs of socks, I had one ultra-thick merino, and could have used two.
Overall the entire experience was 10/10. Good balance of adventure and peacefulness. Would recommend.

Amazing experience! Without a doubt, the best way to explore Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is by kayaking among the icebergs. You get to enjoy the scenery and the blue ice up close, avoiding the noise of crowds and vessels.
The only negative was that the seals decided not to make an appearance that day, but the gorgeous weather and the sights made up for it.
We went on the first morning tour. After we put on the waterproof suits and boots provided, our guide Frank (who was very helpful at all times) gave us a practical briefing before we set off. We climbed on our kayaks and off we paddled. We had to stay in the group but far enough from each other so that we cold take pictures. Plenty of photo opportunities.
On that occasion at least, we were just 6 double kayaks. I found that de duration of the activity is just enough. We did not add the glacier walk because we had already tried that in Norway, though I'm sure it's also worth it.
All in all, I can highly recommend this activity with Iceguide. By the way, it sells out fast in summer so book well ahead of your visit!

We have not because of the timing of our vacation but would not hesitate to take the tour. We took every tour we could and found them professional and thorough.

Bonjour, we are 3 adults planning an excursion on June 20th and unfortunately the combo hike & kayak is full and not available for that day. I need your advice on the "Glacier Kayak Adventure". Does it allow some hike time on the glacier? If yes, for how long? Is it worth it?
If there is no hike included with that tour, would you recommend a kayak tour or a hike tour, as we hesitate which one would be more thrilling, breathtaking? Thank you so much for your help!

A question for Iceguide tour operator. We are coming to Iceland on August 25th. I would love to experience the kayaking in the glacial lagoon. I ran across a video on the internet which shows your promo video with people actually kayaking inside of the glacier. I am realistic about this, it probably does not happen every year, but do you think we will have a good chance to kayak inside of one of them? That looks like an outworldly experience! thanks!

Sometimes we are able to kayak into some cracks, crevasses or other features but of course only if we know its completely safe. This experience is not advertised as part of our tours and the video you probably saw was not made by iceguide and is not promo video for Iceguide´s tours. The video was made by online travel website, and they used clips taken in our tours for this video.

Hi, I have this tour booked for March but I'm slightly apprehensive as to how difficult it is, it's stated as moderate / difficult and I'm uncertain as to what the trek entails or if indeed I have the fitness level required. Any info would helpful. Lyz

It's pretty easy. (Just to be clear, we're talking about kayaking on the glacial lagoon). The lagoon is still water, so there's no paddling against the current. We found the pace to be quite relaxed, and our guide stopped several times to explain the natural history and to just let us admire the view.

How difficult is this. I am 60 and Husband is 70..we are active and fairly good shape but I hear kayaking is difficult

Kayaking the lagoon is not strenuous or difficult at all. It's like ocean kayaking without the waves & swell. The lagoon is basically flat water. The kayaks are open, stable sit-on-top style. If you've never kayaked, I would highly recomend trying it to see if you feel comfy sitting in a kayak & paddling on flat water.
